Japan getting jumbo-sized DSi this year

Well no, not as big as this Lego DSi by artist Sean Kenney - Image 1

Word out of Japan is that Nintendo has a new DSi iteration slated for release in the land of the rising sun later this year. There's really nothing new about this particular DSi model -- except for the fact that it's bigger than those currently out in the market.

According to a Nikkei report, the new DSi's main feature will be a four-inch screen. The larger screen also translates to larger overall bulk. The jumbo-sized DSi will be three quarters of an inch larger than the current model, although the price will remain at the JPÂ¥ 18,900 (US$ 205) point.

Nintendo is reportedly targeting an older demographic with this new DSi, particularly those who like big buttons on cellphones and large print books. While a Japan release has been confirmed for this year, it remains to be seen if this hardware iteration will make it overseas.

Why are you comparing a HANDHELD to a CONSOLE?

The bigger screen has it's own purpose. It's for accessibility. It'll be targeted towards the elderly and so far the rumor is, Japan only.

I think a bigger system should of been available from day one. I like my DSL but have always hated the fact that half of my thumb can cover the entire face buttons layout and then some.

lol jk man... don't take it to the nipple. XD

i haven't messed with a DSi but if half of your thumb can cover all the face buttons they're either hella tiny and compressed together or you got some big *ss thumbs man.... ^_^

how bout we stop "remixing" all the handhelds and actually make something new. for example, psp 2 with dual analogs would be nice or maybe a whole new nintendo handheld(hopefu lly not named something like "Yaii" {pronounced Yay} lol)

sry read this and laughed. b/c personally i traided in my DS lite for a dsi 1 didn't want to try to tradein a ds lite with a broken henge (the lite are known to have that issue) and well i like how the dsi is kinda like the wii with DLC and games. i love the fact it surfs the web faster than that of the psp (even withthe hi-memory mod added to the psp web browser). all i can say about a bigger buttened DSi is parents be warned just because it has big buttens doesn't mean you should buy if for that 7 yearold inless ya want it broken in a week.( my little cuz did this with his DSphat)

I think what he meant by Nintendo being strange is that instead of going with the trend of slimmer and slimmer models like the rest listed above (but a PS2 ultra slim?) they decide to go with DSi jumbo...I don't see where he's comparing handhelds to consoles +x

Well, lets see, he's comparing the DSi to a PS1, PS2, PS3... that's comparing HANDHELD to CONSOLE. They have nothing to do with each other.

Either way his whole comment is ignorant.

GBA-->GBA SP-->GB Micro

NDS-->NDSL-->DSi

This larger DSi is for a specific purpose only. It's not for the mass market and in another article the rumor was DEBUNKED.

Nintendo, just like everyone else, makes each new design smaller and smaller.

DSL + DSLite :P (not digital subscriber line)

Also, I mean either right thumb over abxy or left over d-pad... not both at once. If that clears things up :P

I call it like I see it. False is False.

I still don't exactly see a real comparison, but I did a bit of different-perspective thinking and I think I can see where you're coming from.
