Jack Thomspon responds to Take-Two's response to Jack Thompson |
Ó
As you've all probably heard about by now, Take-Two Interactive has recently filed a legal action against Miami attorney Jack Thompson, stating that the lawyer's campaign against Take-Two's brand of video games violates their First Amendment rights. Well, the response to this lawsuit was swift enough. As reported by the TheStreet.com, Thompson's view on the lawsuit was that it "shows the extent to which I have become a problem for them, or maybe they are trying to show that I won't be a hindrance in the sales of their upcoming products."
The products that he is refering to are no less than the popular video game titles in the Grand Theft Auto series, as well as Manhunt (Manhunt's sequel was announced last month). These games are known for the amount of violence that is portrayed in them, and have therefore been given a "Mature" rating by the ESRB.
Jack Thompson has been on a vigorous campaign against these video games, as well as others that are similar to it. Thompson has tried, on a number of occassions, to have the games declared as illegal under Florida law. It has also been reported that he has even bought shares from Take-Two and has asked to speak at the company's yearly shareholder meeting, which by the way, is set for March 23, 2007.
As a kicker to the situation, GamePolitics.com has also learned that the writ that Thompson has filed with the Florida Supreme Court (this time, in response to the disciplinary issues that they have raised against him) mentions that:
(Take Two's law firm) Blank Rome... has, by this remarkable lawsuit, laid bare precisely what it is about - the silencing and destruction of Take-Two's most abiding and most successful critic.
The gaming community now awaits Take-Two's response.
