It's Not Just For Teenage Boys, Anymore...

Digital video games - especially MMOs - have been traditionally the domain of young men between the ages of 12 and 25. Shigeru Miyamoto, genius behind Nintendo, is hoping to change all that with the latest version of the Wii (pronounced "wee").

Nintendo still does exceptionally well, but the competition in the games industry has become brutal in recent years, leaving the GameCube in third place behind the PS2 and the X-Box.  In a bold move worthy of his samurai ancestors, Shigeru plans to recapture that first-place spot by developing a gaming system for a most unlikely demographic - girls and adults. And when we say "adult," we're talking about people in their 40's and 50's - and beyond.

It will be a hard sell; gamers tend to suffer being stigmatized by non-gamers as being less intelligent, less ambitious, more prone to violence, juvenile, etc.  While this stereotype may be unjustified, it is pervasive - and tends to cause  adults to shy away from gaming. The other problem is that older adults have a tendency to be technophobic, and may be intimidated by new technology.

Miyamoto's new controller looks more like a TV remote than a game controller. For all its humble appearance, however, it promises features that will have gamers of all ages chomping at the bit; with a built-in laser-pointer and motion sensor, it will allow finer control over game figures than ever before. Instead of entering keystrokes or pushing on a joystick, the player will actually act out the moves on the screen, almost as if s/he were totally in that virtual world.

The other part of Miyamoto's formula is to come up with game titles aimed at the older demographic. They have already succeeded with Brain Age, a set of electronic puzzles designed as "mental calisthenics" for older brains. In the past, Nintendo has even attracted girls to gaming with titles like Nintendog, in which the object is to successfully raise and train a dog from puppyhood, and Animal Crossing, a virtual 'toon town where one can garden, go fishing and design custom t-shirts.

The Wii is scheduled for release later this year.

Miyamoto-san, you can officially throw up your Rawkfist. The entire Nintendo marketing campaign can be summed up in most of the lyrics to Thousand Foot Krutch's "Rawkfist"

"Throw up your rockfist if you're feelin it when I drop this. Show 'em how we blow the spot,

Let's make it hot, Let's shock 'em with the bodyrock 'til the party stops. It's time to take

it up a notch, and keep it locked, for all the headbangers in the parking lot. Here we come, if

you're ready or not. No time to talk. Cause we on the clock bringin that Uhh, Uhh, to your

block. Let me show ya where we're comin from, it don't stop, from L.A. to New York. Show me

what you got now!"

Meaning that Nintendo is about to rock the world and show everyone 'from L.A. to New York' how it's done. Bringing the whole world into this revolution.

And the lyrics ESPECIALLY ring true on the chorus:

"All I know, is what it did take to make this, All I am, is what it will take to break this."

Nintendo made the gaming industry and Nintendo will now break it wide open once more. So Shigeru-san, Throw up ya Rawkfist.

(Those interested in seeing the original video, here's a low quality version of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5Gke3S9Nls) QJ Staff, if that link was inappropriate I am sorry and you can delete it. But I feel that the lyrics do ring true to the article.

2)So your going to break it???

3)It is an innovation. From what I've read from journalists who have gotten a chance to use the Wii. They love the thing. Shows what you know.

There aint nothing innovative about what nintendo is doing to you right now. They have been taking YOUR money for years! lol!

They are very good at. They have mastered it to an artform. Now they are pledging more aggressive approaches to take your money. The key is to offer as litttle NEW technology as possible, then have you pay for the SAME technology over and over again(Gameboy anyone?) And, last we shall call it........get ready....

"INNOVATION!"

Sucker.

This coming from a fanboy of a company that charges $600 for a system? And you're saying NINTENDO is ripping people off? Oh, and let's not forget Sony stole part of Nintendo's controller idea as well.

Yeah, way to be innovative. What's the name of their online service? "SBox Live"?

@#8

Atleast that's "$600" that I will only I have to pay for ONCE. And, not everytime nintendo realizes that they forgot to add something to the hardware model(DS anyone?)

Also, get your head out of your ass boy.

Nintendo 'ripped off' the design for your 40yr old tv remote control to design their 'innovation'. And, on top of that, they made ur dumb ass wait for it to add the 'mystique' factor to it. This sealed the deal for the 'hype' behind it. Making you wait for something that you have been using to control your tv set for years.

Nintendo.

Laughing all the way to the $bank$. Who can blame them.

Dumb Ass.
