Is Your DS on Crack, or just Cracking? More Pictures

Well, the cracked DS Lite problem has been resolved with the offers of free repairs to convince customers of their sincerity. At the same time, we wonder about whether it's really a matter of the DS Lite production having problems with fragility, or human error on the consumers' part.  Chances are, the reports of cracked DS Lites may be a result of both, depending on the buyer, but let's take a look at even more cracked DS lites.

The forum post sourced here does mention something about the DS Lite falling apart and becoming unusable if the crack remains, but that's yet to be confirmed. For now, if your DS Lite has a crack, find a way to get it fixed. It's a friendly reminder from your friends here at QJ.

# bad plastic?Guest 2006-08-05 17:46
maybe its not a bad design. maybe its the plastic thats bad and the most presure points will crack? or nintendo just did a horible job designing this system

Judging by how the cracks look, I'd say that the cracks are caused by placing a good deal of pressure down on the case.

Imagine for a second, that if you placed the DS between two books or similarly flat semi-flexible surfaces, the main point of pressure will be the corners of the DS. And in this case, the pressure gets transferred to the thinnest part right next to the corner, which is what you see there.

I'm undecided if it can be considered a design issue as perhaps Nintendo didn't anticipate people putting that kind of stress onto the systems. But then again, i can see how people could just slip the DS into their backpack between some books and through carrying it, sitting back onto the bag, etc, etc can put similar forces onto the hinges.

# Crap Design. Fake PhotosGuest 2006-08-06 03:42
Whatever the cause it should have been designed to withstand every day use.

But look at that first photo of "3 different DS Lites". Compare the crack shapes and you'll see they are in fact all from the same DS just from different angles and different lighting.

I call bullcrap. Like Seboa said, it's 3 pictures of the same ds lite. This retard probably busted his ds and now wants to blame someone else. He can't even spell different right.

My DS Lite suffers the crack! I won't touch it till some third party comes out with a replacement shell for it! Good thing I still have my DS phat. :D Still, if you pay for a product the only reason it should deteriorate is from rough use from the consumer, or over a period of time that way longer than a few months. A scratch on paint, is cosmetic, a crack on the casing, will eventually get bigger, and to say it won't affect gaming, it will later on.
