The forum post sourced here does mention something about the DS Lite falling apart and becoming unusable if the crack remains, but that's yet to be confirmed. For now, if your DS Lite has a crack, find a way to get it fixed. It's a friendly reminder from your friends here at QJ.

Imagine for a second, that if you placed the DS between two books or similarly flat semi-flexible surfaces, the main point of pressure will be the corners of the DS. And in this case, the pressure gets transferred to the thinnest part right next to the corner, which is what you see there.
I'm undecided if it can be considered a design issue as perhaps Nintendo didn't anticipate people putting that kind of stress onto the systems. But then again, i can see how people could just slip the DS into their backpack between some books and through carrying it, sitting back onto the bag, etc, etc can put similar forces onto the hinges.

But look at that first photo of "3 different DS Lites". Compare the crack shapes and you'll see they are in fact all from the same DS just from different angles and different lighting.
