How to Flash your New DS Lite

Ó

Well, if I had a brand new DS lite, which I do not yet , I probably would not risk killing it. For the ones who are crazy enough to try though, recently a video has been posted on You Tube on how to flash your DS Lite. Flashing your DS is mainly used for using unsigned code aka homebrew. It also, as shown later in the video, removes the health warning from the beginning of the DS boot up screen. Personally, that screen annoys me every time I boot up. If you are interested in using a Supercard, this will provide some good insight on what you will need to do. Its an easy process, just a risky one. The video was made by Timber_Dragon, and is a very easy to understand video. It is a little techie, but you really don't "need" to know the terms. Enjoy, and be very careful.

I don't have any manual dexterity when it comes to that type of stuff. So I won't risk bricking my DS Lite just so I don't need to use a PassMe. Now with the DS cart sized PassMe's, you don't really need to flash it.

That was a great video, but man it gotten to be a lot of trouble to flash those things with all the hardware you need to buy, not to mention the added risk of "blowing up" the DS Lite. When I flashed my regular DS, all I needed a wireless card compatible with WiFiMe, and a GBAMP. I did not need any PassMe devices.

Maybe someone could make some money selling pre-flashed DS Lites. After all, it is very handy to be able to run homebrew without using a PassMe device.

I have flashed three DSs and a Lite and have had ZERO PROBLEMS. It's not that difficult or even risky, just follow the directions and it will surprise you how easy it is to do. It sure beats having to have ANY kind of passme device when you're using your flashcard.

Like #3 says, it's very easy to flash your DS, the chances of bricking it are ridiculously small and you get the benefit of getting rid of that annoying health warning screen. FlashMe is the first thing I install when getting a new DS.

# just use passmeGuest 2006-06-20 10:37
Just use a compact Passme card and there is no need to use flashme.

i've flashed many DSs and my own Japanese DSL

flashing a DS is a piece of cake, unless stupid enough to take out the battery

but flashing DSL can be a bit scary(ya, it heppened when i was flashing mine...)

but for those of you new to this, i suggest practice on your DS first...

Does it have to be a supercard? or could this flashing technique work with any flash card?

I can't seem to upgrade my superpass2 to be able to flash a ds lite. The printer port crap doesn't seem to work for me.

I am going to attempt a flash of my new DSlite this weekend.

In order to play homebrew on a DS you need two components, one is a passme device which fits into the DS slot and the other is a supercard (or similar) which plugs into the GBA slot.

Traditionaly, passme's have been large bulky units which stuck out of the back of the DS. Using flashme bypasses the need for a passme device. But with passme devices now the size of DS carts, there is less need to perform this operation.

Then why am I performing flashme? Because the small size passme was realeased the day after I purchased my bulky formfactor passme!!!

That is one stroooong american accent. 'I will assooooooom you have the flashme'.

Cool video though. I never knew much about the process before watching this. Seems extremely easy haha. But I'm going to be getting a SuperKey anyway (which supports sleep mode) I can't think of much reason to flash =S

flashing a DSL is scary and you can brick them easily. i tired to flash mine 2 days after release and when i tried shorting the SL1 it wouldn't flash i tried 4 differants tools and finally on the 5th try the system just shutoff with out reason. needless to say when i went to boot it up there was nothing but blank screens and i had to go exchange it for a new DSL. i was lucky that the store did an exchange and had some left in stock other wise i would be waiting for a new one from nintendo.

if your thinking of flashing couse you are like me and have a Passkey 2 or other pass through device and want the security that flashme gives for the firmware be carefull of what you do.

if you just want to be rid of the bulky pass through device i say buy a passcard 3 for 30.00 even if you just bought a pass through device couse in the end that is a good investement to keep from accidentlly bricking your DSL just couse you wanted less bulk.

# not hard to doGuest 2006-06-20 18:50
I flashed my Lite right after I got it. No prior experience with flashing any DS's. Instead of his tinfoil toothpick, I suggest you use a small allen wrench or screendriver, wrapped in tape so that only the very tip has metal exposed. Supposedly there is another metal contact in teh hole (not the screw) that can turn off yor DS if you make contact with it. That's what the tape wrapping should help prevent. Good luck

there was a way to do it without having to short that jumper or even without one of them passme things

#15 well initally i tried using a jewlers screw driver that was a torx style couse it fit perfect to short out the 2 pads with out touching any thing else but had no luck. i tried 2 other drivers and then finally the foil and the foil is what killed it.

any way desided to give it a try again last night after posting, though this time i used a packing staple as i call them (large metal staples used for heavy duty boxes) i bent it straight and made sure the end would conduct. any way looded the flashme program and shorted the contacts.... no go moved the staple to a differant position still no go pressed even hard (was flexing the PCB) and twisted the staple a little got 1% then stopped.

took about five repositions of the staple and pressing very hard (could hear plastic creaking) to finally get it to flash all the way. i think the issue alot of people have like me is that the pads are not pefectly flat or level to each other so any metal object like a screwdriver or staple doesn't get full connection with out wigling it to the point of shorting something and killing your DS.

any way hope this helps some people who are having issues. best thing you can do if you want to flash using a tool that is not foil is test fit and press hard enough to leave marks on the pads to see how you have to position the tool when you flash and how hard you need to press to make proper contact.

also there is two v7 flashme firmwares one is around 269KB and the other is around 526KB. if you have a DSL you need the 526KB as it supports the 4 brightness levels where the 269KB will work but will only shut the back light off.

# bricking...Guest 2006-06-21 06:48
Bricking is a direct result of not know what you are doing.

I bet the people that brick their ds are mostly the people that post a question to a forum that is covered in the sticky topic right above their new post.

They are the same people that ask, "What does RTFM mean?" every time someone tells them to RTFM.

They skip the readme's, and don't understand the value of the search function of forums.

Flashing your DS Lite isn't complicated, but it does require you to know what you are doing and why you are doing it.

Bricking is a darwinian defense mechanism built into modern electronics.

RTFM, Search, and learn some patience.

Oh, and if you are one of those people, if you ever have sex, please use a condom for the sake of the future.
