Nintendo of America has announced that the first week of the holiday season has spelled a historic period for the company. Its Nintendo DS has now eclipsed the record of predecessor Game Boy Advance for most units sold in a week while the Nintendo Wii hit the second-biggest sales total in a seven-day period next to its launch.

In the Thanksgiving week, the Nintendo DS racked up 653.000 units sold in North America alone, shattering the 600,000 record set by last generation's Game Boy Advance. Nintendo says it's all but certain that the Nintendo DS will become the top-selling video game system of 2007 and of all time.

The Nintendo Wii, on the other hand, sold 350,000 units in the Thanksgiving week alone, surpassing what some of its competitors tally in an entire month. Nintendo also reports that the Nintendo Wii reached the 5 million units sold mark faster than any other game console in history.

Nintendo says that it will increase efforts to ship more Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS units to accommodate the tremendous demand for its products.

I have to agree with MCS personally, i mean lets be real, Mario has been milked more than anything in game history and yet all they do is keep milking him. They need to make more innovative games. And by that i mean make a new character to help your system sell. Besides MP and such. They need to make a brand new game with new character never seen in Nintendo history. Its like Nintendo is a one trick pony. Don't get me wrong i love Mario and grew up with it but its time to let him go and make new characters. Look at Sony and MS, they have plenty of games that makes the system sell and many characters. Yet all we see is Mario this and that. Im sorry but i just don't see anything past SSBB when it comes out. Yet time will tell, but right now its not looking too good on the games department for Nintendo.

While this may be my thoughts and opinion its what im sensing. Wii will probably won't do that well come 08, PS3 heavy hitters are coming GTA4, DMC$, UT3 next week or so, Killzone 3 and FF13, Haze, RFOM2 the list continues. MS has plenty as well Ninja Gaiden 2, More halo games, not part of the trilogy but like prequels and such. Maybe Gears two and the list continues. I just don't think the Wii has the games to compete with the line-up Sony and MS is getting and it may turn out that the Wii is a fad, who knows. But this is what im seeing and hopefully it won't turn out the way im seeing for Nintendo but they need a brand new series and games to make the system sell. Mario has been milked far to much, you have this good innovative machine and yet you still bring out the overly milked Mario get more innovative, or better word creative games.

While you have some good arguments, and I commend your post, I can't help but see that majority of your PS "heavy hitters" are not original games. I mean GTA, UT..I've been playing these games since they were on windows 95/98. Ninja Gaiden? I've played all of them since the Arcade and NES versions. DMC4, FF13, doesn't the number after the game speak for itself?

Since the N64 console, there hasn't been more than one TRUE Mario game per generation. Just don't get all the Mario Parties, etc, and one Mario Game every 6 years isn't that much. How come nobody ever cries that there are too many "Zelda" games?

» Billie Well

Its not the point of the heavy hitters not being originally from PS. My point was the PS3 and 360 have some great variety of games now and still coming, while i can't see any other games for the Wii after SSBB. And the fact Mario, MP and as you said Zelda has been milked far too much, Mario more. They don't have brand new games never seen before on the Wii or any other system, and thats why there not going to be successful in terms of games this gen.

Again this is my thoughts that im seeing and hoping it doesn't turn out that way.

» I understand

I understand that these "heavy hitters" don't come from the PS, I'm saying that these "heavy hitter" francises are being miked just as much. I mean there have been 4 GTA games in the last 6 years.

We live in an age of remakes, just go to your local movie cinema and check out the remakes and sequels. I'm not saying it is cool, or that I like it, it's just you cannot honestly say that Mario is being milked, while all these other titles are fresh.
