Has Nintendo abandoned its core community? |
Ó

There's a lot of us out there who were let down with Nintendo's press conference during E3 for their lack of attention to the core community, as a lot of you have made clear. I haven't made a secret of my own disappointment with it either, but that doesn't mean Nintendo's abandoned us. It's only E3 after all, and we all know how the event's gone downhill.
E3 itself was a letdown this year. Publishers, developers, and high profile personalities in the video game industry have expressed as much. Most of the bigger studios naturally won't be taking out their big guns during the event. Even Microsoft and Sony didn't have that much to offer either. I expect to hear the big news on the next big gaming event, at the Leipzig GC.
Come to think about it, E3 wasn't that much of a disappointment, considering how everyone else didn't bring their A game to the event. Video game industry analyst Michael Pachter also has his own views on the matter. Now I'm sure a lot of you have strong opinions about the man as well, but hold off until you read what he has to say, eh?
Some hardcore gamers were critical of Nintendo's failure to announce new Mario and Zelda games at the show... we think that Nintendo focused upon building upon its formidable lead with the mass market, and do not consider the lack of major hard core game announcements to be an abandonment of its core.

When was the last time you saw a Microsoft Windows comerical?
No, Nintendo hasn't abandoned anything. Like it says in the article, "It's only E3 after all..."
E3 is not the be-all, end-all of gaming.
E3 is still considered to be the biggest and most important gaming show by the western audience. (Even if the show may not deserve the perception anymore.)
E3 really should be the place where devs and the platform makers reach out to the focus audience of hardcore gamers.
Places like GDC and CES make much better venues for broader/casual audiences. Nintendo, being a japanese company may still in fact be holding their Aces for TGS, but western audiences really cant take solace in that, as they wont benefit from TGS when it comes.
"No, Nintendo hasn't abandoned anything."
That's true. Nintendo never had anything other than the most casual players in mind from the get go. Half of the Wii's most "hardcore" games come from either the Gamecube or the PS2 (Okami).
E3 was not the moment I realized Nintendo was no longer interested in making games for me; it was after playing Brawl and Galaxy that I realized this.
i agree 100% i like when asked about core gamers feeling left out reggie was all like "left out? but weve got GTA on DS and animal crossing!" 1st off animal crossing is not hardcore, second gta on DS will probably suck.
"E3 really should be the place where devs and the platform makers reach out to the focus audience of hardcore gamers."
Should be, but isn't be. E3 is going the way of Comdex since the devs and media are fed up with them. Nothing but a joke.
When was the last Comdex? 2002? 2003? It's been so long I can't remember. Now it's finally dead. Moved to Interop just like E3 should move to CES.
A huge chunk what used to be offered at E3 has already moved to CES.
I think some people are confusing CORE gamer with HARDCORE gamer. What the hell does a CORE Nintendo gamer have to do with GTA?
Nintendo is still catering to it's CORE gamers. Nintendo is and has always been Mario, Zelda, Metroid.....
What casual gamer would read about E3 anyway?
There was no point marketing E3 for casuals when by definition, casuals don't get that involved.
E3 was all they've got. They weren't holding back, they abandoned HARDcore gamers.
Quit leaving the hard out of core.
if not.. have a crack at it ;) I don't think they abandoned core Wii community at all. I have a few Wii upcoming title that I want more than ever like Fatal Frame 4...
i really hope nintendo will announce something at gc germany (games convention). gc became really big over the last years, at least in media perception, and it was bigger than e3 from the it's start.
visitor numbers:
gc 2003: 92.000 e3 2003: 65.000
gc 2007: 185.000 e3 2007: ? (e3 numbers must have decreased)
(gc is half a day longer than e3 though^^)
so gc is the biggest gaming fair in the western world.
(if not please correct me)
where would nintendo announce stuff to the western audience if not at gc?
but in case they won't announce something "hardcore" like, i've got loads of "hardcore" snes games to play
@isohaven: i really can't understand how one could not be totally crazy about
brawl, with friends around it's a blast, but online sucks though
I recently got a wii about a week ago and my first impressions so far are "blah!" I have Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Brothers Brawl. These games are ok but where are all the hardcore games? I know Zelda is pretty good and I plan on getting that too but all the games I see look like gimmicky party games. What happened to the big platformers, fighters, and space shooters? Where are all the serious roll playing games? Maybe they all went to Microsoft I guess but I hope they get some soon because after looking at their huge selection of games, I feel like it could be way better. I remember when the SNES came out and right away there were a lot of awesome games that began popping up but sadly, I can't say the same thing about the wii. Also I notice that the internal memory for downloads is tiny. What the hell would posses a major game console maker like Nintendo to be so wrong about their memory situation? I downloaded a couple virtual console games and realize that a third of the memory was used in a flash! I guess this system is just a gimmick after all.
Is Nintendo's core community their new "casual" customers who bought the Wii thinking the family can have fun with it, or their once loyal fans that owned the first NES and every system after it?
I WAS a loyal fan, and I do own EVERY Nintendo system that's a real game console, not a toy.
I would feel royally screwed over if I actually owned a Wii. Their fans that put them where they are today everywhere would like to give Nintendo the one finger salute.
The latest E3 was proof Nintendo doesn't give a s*it about any traditional type games or gamers.
F**k Galaxy and Brawl.
You need the following:
Scarface: The World Is Yours, Manhunt 2, Bully, Resident Evil 4/Umbrella Chronicles (UC maybe short but it beats alot of things), Ghost Squad, Zelda Twilight Princess is fantastic btw. Oh and in the not too distant future, Dead Rising.
And to all people whining about lack of space, there is an SD card slot in the front so you can back your downloads up elsewhere like on your computer or on multiple sticks.
"Nintendo is still catering to it's CORE gamers. Nintendo is and has always been Mario, Zelda, Metroid....."
So you're saying Nintendo cares about their NEW core gamers only? If yes, then I agree.
Maybe they're mad their old core gamers (the ones that made Nintendo products successful in the first place) didn't buy many Gamecubes....
Just because Nintendo didn't show off some 'hardcore' games at E3 doesn't mean they've abandoned the already established fans. Christ, talk about jumping the gun.
They have stated that they will be bringing new Mario and Zelda games out for the Wii. Add to that the fact that no-one has said that Metroid is finished with, and Brawl has just come out last month (at least in the UK). What signs are there that Nintendo is abandoning its old audience? None, unless you're ignorant enough to include E3.
As for you, Mister...
"Their fans that put them where they are today everywhere would like to give Nintendo the one finger salute."
How do you know? I wouldn't like to. Yet again you seem to think that your opinion is universal.
"The latest E3 was proof Nintendo doesn't give a s*it about any traditional type games or gamers."
No it wasn't, retard. Also, the fact that YOU say that takes away from any perceivable truth there may have been in that statement.
It's a discredit to QJ, I believe, that this article even exists. How unfortunate. Don't worry, I'll still frequent these pages ;).
No you idiot. I did NOT say anything about NEW.
Get a clue.
Beats me! I have no clue. I think it's a blast to play. Very fun.
"Is Nintendo's core community their new "casual" customers who bought the Wii thinking the family can have fun with it, or their once loyal fans that owned the first NES and every system after it?"
There is no NEW core. What do you base this garbage on? Your own BS in your head?
"I WAS a loyal fan, and I do own EVERY Nintendo system that's a real game console, not a toy."
I AM a loyal fan and I do own EVERY Nintendo system and ALL of them are real and ALL of them are toys. THESE ARE ALL TOYS you moron. They are all found in TOY STORES they are all GAMES. What a douche!
"I would feel royally screwed over if I actually owned a Wii."
IF? So you DONT actually own a Wii? So you lied to everyone this entire time? What a jackass!!!!!
"Their fans that put them where they are today everywhere would like to give Nintendo the one finger salute."
LIE!!!!!!! I'm a fan and I DO NOT want to give them a one finger salute so your comment here is 100 percent WRONG!!!!
"The latest E3 was proof Nintendo doesn't give a s*it about any traditional type games or gamers."
And you based the word traditional on what? The fact that we have PROOF there are more casual gamers then HARDCORE gamers? Obviously casual IS traditional. Mario, Zelda, Metroid...all casual...all traditional.
Nintendo is in business to make money. They're doing that now by marketing to the people who have money. Teenagers don't have money, adults do. Adults have families. Families buy a variety of titles for the members in their households. For example, I play Umbrella Chronicles, but I would never allow my children to play that game. So they play games like Lego Star Wars and Wii Play. Wii caters to the largest crowd, so it has the largest sales. Why is everyone else having such a hard time with such a basic concept?
Scarface looks boring, Manhunt 2 has bad graphics, I played Bully on PS2 (I think it was), and it was ok but now it seems old, I already have Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube, I might check out Umbrella Chronicles if I have time do to RE 5 out soon and I do plan on getting Zelda Twilight Princess. Dead Rising might be ok I might see about that one but so far it doesn't seem very appealing considering all the good games coming out for the PS3 soon.
I know you can save your game on an SD card but I am talking about downloading Virtual Console games on to an SD card. That is what everyone is complaining about.
@ mister cummune:
yes, nintendo is highly successful in making money.
from an economycal point of view i understand, that nintendo does invest more in "casual" games, since they are low cost to produce and appeal to a bigger croud, but that doesn't mean that everybody has to be happy about nintendo giving less attention to the oldschool gamers.
nintendo obviously gives more of it's attention to casual gamers in the current generation of it's consoles. but i have still hope that even the casual gamers will be fed up with gimmicky games after some time.
Wrong. Nintendo does not give more of its attention to casual gamers. Your confusing what other companies such as Ubisoft are doing with what Nintendo is doing. Nintendo has no control over other companies making so called "casual" games like Carnival Games on their system. Look at the games actually made and published by Nintendo and you will see that most of their games are franchises. Nintendo games on the Wii made BY NINTENDO include:
Donkey Kong Barrel Blast
Mario games (Galaxy, Kart, Paper, and so on)
Twilight Princess
Metroid 3
Fatal Frame 4
Fire Emblem
Pokemon games
Smash Bros
Wario games
Animal Crossing Town Folk
All of these are franchises catering to the core of Nintendo gamers who played these games on previous systems. Nintendo does make some games such as Brain Training and Wii Fit/Sports/Play that would be considered "casual", but for the most part, casual games on the Wii are published by one of the many companies supporting Nintendo's product.
i think most of nintendo's own games on wii manage to cater to both, casual and tradition gamers, but they don't come out in an appropriate frequency. so core gamers don't have that much variaty at all. also rpgs and strategy games are (almost) nonexistent on the wii.
i really wonder where all of nintendo's profits go to, they could at least spend some bugs on producing core games.
it is all nintendo's "fault" that third parties concentrate on casual games, because they launched the big "touch generations" marketting campaign in the first place, claiming a completely undeveloped market segment. and then third parties just followed the trend nintendo set.
but before long casual gamers will get in contact with core games and develope the need to play those. (at least i hope so)
so the market for casual games won't be bigger than the hardcore market anymore.
I think where you two aren't meeting each other is that the average person views your list of games as CASUAL.
Nintendo CORE gamer IS casual.
The way I see it, it's the gamer that defines the casuality of a game; how much they play it etc. However, I can see where yous are coming from. I agree with Mister Commune Ist more than anything though.
