Chart

That graph you see above (click the thumbnail) has been put together by Square2005 of NeoGAF. What is it? It's a chart tracking the sales progress of all handhelds since 2001! If you want to see a visual version of how the DS and PSP are stacking up to the GBA or even the N-Gage (Yay N-Gage!) then you've got all you need! You just gotta love those spikes in December!

It starts off at the launch of the Game Boy Advance in June 2001 and goes up to the month that we last received sales data for, August 2006. In their lifetime, the consoles have done these numbers:
  • Game Boy Color - 17,050,000
  • Game Boy Advance ~ 13,730,000 (numbers not counted in recent months)
  • Game Boy Advance SP + Game Boy Micro - 18,340,000
  • All Game Boy Advance models combined: 32,027,000
  • Nintendo DS - 5,837,000
  • PlayStation Portable - 5,022,000
  • N-Gage ~ 60,000
Poor, poor N-Gage. The GBA SP, DS, and PSP are still selling over a hundred thousand units a month! It's a great time to be a handheld gamer. Unless you're a Nokia fanboy of course...

...or does there exist a strong corelation between sales of a system and some smash hit coming out?

I always knew there was, but never thought that it mattered to that extent.

Following the trend, I predict an enormous spike in PSP sales when GTA:Vice City Stories comes out...

The "Spikes" you are refering to are actually around christmas and not just because of a smash hit.

#3, most of the big games were put out at the major releases. You can see when GTA LCS was released and although there should have been a big spike, there wasn't. Although the spike in November might be partially due to GTA LCS. I doubt VCS will be very high seeing as most of the ones who would have bought it for VCS already got it with LCS. Now Pokemon for DS might be different. That game will be HUGE.

#7, there is a line pointing to it >_> Check between September and October 2003.

All the big spikes are due to christmas buying

- all around november/december....

thats when everyone buys consoles. - Which is why its such a loss for sony to bring ps3 out after xmas in europe

# The N-gage should not be included!v2e2j 2006-09-10 12:34
Many of u r 4getting that the N-gage is also a cellphone that needs a sim card & a some kind of contract as well 2 use. Even if u just want 2 play games on it. Some ppl know how 2 use it w/o a sim just by using a special app. others don't know about this. So the N-gage should not even be pt. of this list @ all. Those other handheld gaming devices can be played out right w/o any sim card or contract attached 2 it. So it's a whole lot more easier 4 any1 2 get a handheld gaming device(s). Than 2 get a contract cellphone plan or even a prepaid contract plan. 1 other point only T-Mobile & Cingular is where u can use the N-gage. No other Cellphone providers.

Actually, you don't need a service contract to use the N-Gage, just a real SIM card (it can even be a de-activated SIM). I found a cell phone once that still had a card in it (long since cancelled since the phone had been 'lost' for months when I found), but the SIM card allows my N-Gage to play games. :)

Granted, getting a SIM card without a phone contract probably isn't easy, but it is, technically, possible...

The N-Gage suffered from piracy so the delevopers stopped making games for it. Maybe the psp will go the same way, who knows.

By the By the overall N-Gage Number would be a much better number if the graph was of,say, the UK Market. It did a bit better over here.

did you know my friend has an N-gaage? he got it a few years ago for one cent ( yeah one cent ) for taking a 2 year contract cell hpone activation on his N-gage. He has no games for his N-gage but he says he's cellphone ( N-gage ) was so cheap he had to take it.

If you guys like, I could get the Japanese chart up this weekend. But I always get such horrible reactions when the PSP isn't doing well >_> And well, in Japan it's not pretty. DS outsold PSP like 5:1. I think the charts only have DS/PSP and maybe GBA.
