Petric - Image 1

Remember last month when it was reported that a 16-year-old kid shot his parents because they took away his Halo 3? Here's a follow-up to that.

For one, the kid is now already 17, just so you know. In 2007, Daniel Petric shot his parents in cold blood for keeping his copy of Halo 3 away from him. This resulted in his mother's death, while the father eventually recovered. Petric finally had his hearing last month, and just today, the judge has convicted him of his crimes.

No sentence was passed on Petric just yet (that will come at a later date), however, he is facing the maximum possible penalty of life sentence in prison without parole.

Though his defense attorneys attributed his crimes to his video game addiction (which, in their argument, made him less responsible), the Judge overruled this, and pointed to evidence saying that he actually plotted the act.

According to the report from the Associated Press, one of the prosecutors:

described Petric as a cold, calculating killer who plotted to murder his parents, Mark and Susan Petric, and make it appear to be a murder-suicide by putting the gun in his father's hand.

Meanwhile, it was also revealed that when Petric left the crime scene, there was only one thing which he took with him: his copy of the Halo 3 game.

Based on the Judge's ruling, Petric is now guilty of aggravated murder in the death of his mom, and the attempted aggravated murder in the assault on his dad. On top of that, Petric was also convicted of tampering with evidence.

Which part about the controversy specifically? I'm not sure if it will help you, but here's something interesting I read while I was doing this post: apparently, Daniel Petric was the leader for his church's bible quiz team. Could you imagine? Well, it might not be far off, because his father is actually a pastor/minister...

Too bad he is only 17. I would take the death penalty over a LWOP sentence any day. I dont understand the point of LWOP anyway. If I was a lifer i would do nothing but spend my entire day plotting an escape or if I was really sick minded I would kill for the hell of it. What does it matter? I'm stuck inside the prison for life anyway so who cares if I get caught trying to escape. What are they gonna do? Give me a longer sentence?

Plus I'd be paying for his care in prison through taxes! But I've heard some reports that say the death penalty costs more per person than LWOP... Dont know if thats true though.

Basically all I'm saying is he should be executed =D

If they're not going to rehabilitate (if they even can) then I would probably agree. The problem is that the death penalty itself walks a thin line that maybe for the sake of the one that we made a mistake with we shouldn't cross.

by Silver-Tiger - 2009-01-12 10:10

nope, death sentence is a bad penalty. He's just dead then. However, in a life penalty he has to think over what he has done to his family. That ***hole deserves this.

by dd409 - 2009-01-12 10:16
» Why he can't be put to death:

IIRC, this happened in Wellington, New Zealand. New Zealand abolished the death penalty in the 1980's, so the worst sentence he can get is LWOP.

If only it were legal, I personally would have him extradited to Iran. Child executions are legal there.

I mean, he did it in cold blood. I personally don't believe in video game addiction at all--your body cannot become physically dependent on video games, therefore I do not believe such an addiction exists. And it's just a crappy excuse.

tl;dr - I hope he burns.

by Darkthunder90 - 2009-01-12 10:23

That's the juicy part. They will let him have his Halo 3, but they will give him an XBOX to play it on.

» Death Sentence Invalid

@ Scribe: Rehabilitate?! People don't rehabilitate, they don't change.

Rehab is a stupid program thought up by a doctor to make him/her a *****load of money in which they pretend to be helping someone... when in actuality all they're doing is constantly reminding them of the mistakes they've made.

As for the death penalty, I don't understand why people feel so strongly about it! Why let someone off so easily by killing them?

Why not enforce a torture penalty? Instead of life in prison, they get life in prison with torture! That, in my opinion, is the only valid rehab.

And I am sick of all of you people jumping to conclusions that this kid is some kind of cold blooded killer. Did you know his parents? Do you know whether or not he was abused? Whether he chose religion, or had it thrust upon him with great prejudice?

Perhaps his father is one of those priests/paritioners that likes to touch little boys. If that were to come out, wouldn't you change your mind about Daniel?

People think murder is always the wrong way to go about something no matter what the circumstances may be.

Sometimes it's justified.

If you only knew the story.. The father was a priest first off, just an FYI. Secondly, the parents took the game away from the 16 year old kid because it was too violent in their opinion. He played it over friends houses and when they took his copy and locked it away, he found it along with a gun and shot both of his parents in the head. I don't really know how you can blame the parents.. Especially without knowing the whole story, also no one is blaming the game itself.

Why in the hell do people automatically assume it's because of bad parenting. They took away a game that he was too young to play. They didn't even hide it where he could find it they put it in a safe. His dad is a ministeror priest. It sounds like they were doing a very good job at parenting, some people just have this mental attitude that will always be there that gets you really pissed off when someone does stuff and then they do stupid things. My brother has this problem. It was nothing to do with video games. In this case the fact that someone made him mad with a video game is was caused it. They could of taken away anything and this could of happened it wasn't specifically because it was a video game. I'm sure his dad was where he got the money from to buy the game.

All prison members are tax dollar leechers. Not to come off as a dollar-grubber, but why let mass murderers live off our dollar for 50, 60, sometimes 70 years? Approx. $5 each for 3 meals a day x 365 days x 60 years x people serving life in prison adds up. Just execute the *****s who raped and killed three women for his own sick thrills, rather than keep the one responsible for their deaths on a free ride. Death row is enough for them to think about what they did.

People want him to die because they think it will make them feel better about themselves, and it's allowed under our justice system because we're run by vengeful eye for an eye politicians.

As for life sentences, I don't think they should be used as frequently. Only for massive homicides and repeated offenses. Otherwise we should have some kind of max sentence (like 21 years for example) and give the person another chance.

Too bad in a country run like this one, that will never happen.

@StingBlah: Source? Reasons? Just sit the guy in a chair and let him fry. Make the family deal with the funeral bills, etc. After all, it was up to them to raise him or encourage him not to kill people. Unless it takes a crapload of electricity to kill a person, it should be almost invisible in tax dollars, maybe a few thousand.

Denzel Washington said it best when he said,

"Forgiveness is between them and God. It's my job to arrange the meeting."

Sure, maybe they should be forgiven, maybe they shouldn't, it depends. But we can't make special cases, and we can't let all murderers off scot-free.

Before I say anything else, remember that this happened in New Zealand, not America. That said, I'll touch on the American justice system:

Think about it this way: America was founded on the basis of Christianity and the teachings of the Bible. Doesn't matter if you like it or not, but it's true. The Bible dictates that murderers be condemned, therefore our society does the same.

@girandhistacos

i somewhat agree with torture. i mean, there has to be other countries that torture people too. come on, we're all human and whether u want to believe it or not, their are humans that could care less whether they take lives, like terrorists.

i dont agree with the part about his dad might hav molested him or something. it is so easy now for someone to get help for that if it is happening to them. plus, what reason is there for him killing his mother?

even though the judge dismissed the reason was video games, i can still see that lawers are gonna still use this case to ban more videogames.

i actually believe he killed them because of the halo 3. i just think he probably already had some mental issues, and was psychotic. i just hate people that cant let games be games, and not try to reanact them in real life. besides, halo 3 is a futuristic shooter, with weapons that dont even resemble real guns. i can understand if he played gta4, but like i said, let games be games. rant over

Hes basically in his room all day playing board games by himself or doing homework.

He does however get to spend his weekends in the church choir... And if you met him... Hes got to be the most depressed kid ever. Seriousley, genuinely insane... Abnormal... And weird thing is, we were talking about (but not in front of him obv) how this kid is the person most likely to end up killing their parents someday. Then I see this article like a few days later.

Weird. 0_o

And yah... Sorry for rambling about something you probably dont care about at all, I just thought the resembelence was scary.

Executed... For adultery? I've got a cousin who's from Iran, so I'm not prejudiced or anything, but thats so out of order. That president/dictator whatever the hell he is needs to be shot, you know? Mebbe not killed... But just taken out...

And QJ... FIX THIS PL0X: '
