Halo 3 gamer who shot his parents now convicted of aggravated murder, may get life sentence in prison |

Remember last month when it was reported that a 16-year-old kid shot his parents because they took away his Halo 3? Here's a follow-up to that.
For one, the kid is now already 17, just so you know. In 2007, Daniel Petric shot his parents in cold blood for keeping his copy of Halo 3 away from him. This resulted in his mother's death, while the father eventually recovered. Petric finally had his hearing last month, and just today, the judge has convicted him of his crimes.
No sentence was passed on Petric just yet (that will come at a later date), however, he is facing the maximum possible penalty of life sentence in prison without parole.
Though his defense attorneys attributed his crimes to his video game addiction (which, in their argument, made him less responsible), the Judge overruled this, and pointed to evidence saying that he actually plotted the act.
According to the report from the Associated Press, one of the prosecutors:
described Petric as a cold, calculating killer who plotted to murder his parents, Mark and Susan Petric, and make it appear to be a murder-suicide by putting the gun in his father's hand.
Meanwhile, it was also revealed that when Petric left the crime scene, there was only one thing which he took with him: his copy of the Halo 3 game.
Based on the Judge's ruling, Petric is now guilty of aggravated murder in the death of his mom, and the attempted aggravated murder in the assault on his dad. On top of that, Petric was also convicted of tampering with evidence.

I'm not sure if it will help you, but here's something interesting I read while I was doing this post: apparently, Daniel Petric was the leader for his church's bible quiz team. Could you imagine? Well, it might not be far off, because his father is actually a pastor/minister...
so, it's pretty lame that his attourney wuld pull the "videogames made him do it" tactic. i'm glad to hear the judge dismissed that.

Too bad he is only 17. I would take the death penalty over a LWOP sentence any day. I dont understand the point of LWOP anyway. If I was a lifer i would do nothing but spend my entire day plotting an escape or if I was really sick minded I would kill for the hell of it. What does it matter? Plus I'd be paying for his care in prison through taxes! But I've heard some reports that say the death penalty costs more per person than LWOP... Dont know if thats true though.

If they're not going to rehabilitate (if they even can) then I would probably agree. The problem is that the death penalty itself walks a thin line that maybe for the sake of the one that we made a mistake with we shouldn't cross.
nope, death sentence is a bad penalty. He's just dead then. However, in a life penalty he has to think over what he has done to his family. That ***hole deserves this.
IIRC, this happened in Wellington, New Zealand. New Zealand abolished the death penalty in the 1980's, so the worst sentence he can get is LWOP.
If only it were legal, I personally would have him extradited to Iran. Child executions are legal there.
I mean, he did it in cold blood. I personally don't believe in video game addiction at all--your body cannot become physically dependent on video games, therefore I do not believe such an addiction exists. And it's just a crappy excuse.

Why not enforce a torture penalty? Instead of life in prison, they get life in prison with torture! That, in my opinion, is the only valid rehab.

If you only knew the story.. The father was a priest first off, just an FYI. Secondly, the parents took the game away from the 16 year old kid because it was too violent in their opinion. He played it over friends houses and when they took his copy and locked it away, he found it along with a gun and shot both of his parents in the head. I don't really know how you can blame the parents.. Especially without knowing the whole story, also no one is blaming the game itself.

Just because someone is a priest does not make them an instantly good parent. Children of Clergy usually act up the most. For every Pastors daughter who is a saint, i bet i can find you ten that are total skanks! Repression can be a *****.

Why in the hell do people automatically assume it's because of bad parenting. They took away a game that he was too young to play. They didn't even hide it where he could find it they put it in a safe. His dad is a ministeror priest. It sounds like they were doing a very good job at parenting, some people just have this mental attitude that will always be there that gets you really pissed off when someone does stuff and then they do stupid things. My brother has this problem. It was nothing to do with video games. In this case the fact that someone made him mad with a video game is was caused it. They could of taken away anything and this could of happened it wasn't specifically because it was a video game. I'm sure his dad was where he got the money from to buy the game.

All prison members are tax dollar leechers. Not to come off as a dollar-grubber, but why let mass murderers live off our dollar for 50, 60, sometimes 70 years? Approx. $5 each for 3 meals a day x 365 days x 60 years x people serving life in prison adds up. Just execute the *****s who raped and killed three women for his own sick thrills, rather than keep the one responsible for their deaths on a free ride. Death row is enough for them to think about what they did.
People want him to die because they think it will make them feel better about themselves, and it's allowed under our justice system because we're run by vengeful eye for an eye politicians.
As for life sentences, I don't think they should be used as frequently. Only for massive homicides and repeated offenses. Otherwise we should have some kind of max sentence (like 21 years for example) and give the person another chance.

Look, Halo is over-rated, but that's like saying getting a fine for attempted murder is under-punishment. It is a good game, just not as good as hype suggests.

I think that the kid should serve at least 3 - 4 years doing community service. A life sentence is not given for every murder. I'm am pretty sure he didn't mean to really kill his mother. The makers of Halo 3 and other video games should not make the game so fun that it gives kids an urge to play non-stop.

A life sentence is 25 years, not til death! Also, take into account that he'll get less for the time he has served, which is 1 1/2 years, he'll get 3 or 4 years off. Go figure... His 25 years will end up being 21-22 years, anyway.

Ive got a friend who really gets to do f*** all in life because his parents never, EVER let him out, never let him watch TV, dont allow him any kind of mobile phone or games console, dont allow him to use msn or basically anything. Hes basically in his room all day playing board games by himself or doing homework.
He does however get to spend his weekends in the church choir... And if you met him... Hes got to be the most depressed kid ever. Seriousley, genuinely insane... Abnormal...
