GDC 2007: Fils-Aime gets to one-up Harrison

Reggie Fils-Aime - Image 1Yes, folks, for those who may not have been aware of it, this would be a good time to point out to you that the Internet (well, it was actually just Digg...) has practically imploded (yet again) for the better part of today.

The reason for this? One line out of Reggie Fils-Aime's mouth, spoken at this year's Game Developers Conference and directed at Sony's Phil Harrison. One line which may actually end up immortalized in video game history books, web comics, blog entries, and trivia centers for years to come.

As eloquently documented by Wired's Susan Arendt, this was how the whole thing went:

"Kick his ass and take his name!" someone shouted from a few rows behind me.

"Who?" answered Reggie in mid-autograph. "Phil Harrison, front row!" Sure enough, there was Phil Harrison, seated dead center, front row. Looks like he could show up on time for NintendoÂ’s keynote, but not SonyÂ’s.

With a grin and a chuckle, Reggie replies, "Some would say weÂ’ve already done that."

Touchdown. The crowd goes wild.

We're pretty sure this was all said in the spirit of friendly competition, and that any added color that others may have perceived in that exchange were most probably based on their own console preferences and biases.

For all we know, Harrison and Fils-Aime may have gone off together afterwards and had a successful Molten Core run with the rest of their guild in World of Warcraft. We'll never know.

» This is funny

I own both Wii and PS3. I favor my PS3, but this is hilarious. I really hope that Phil laughs this off as friendly competition. FA knows that the success theyve had recently will not go on forever, especially as 360 and PS3 slowly drop in price. They have a good product right now, but they are running sales based on a fad at the moment.

Ok, that's pretty funny. How is this PS3 news?? The wii is for children, and will be slowing down quickly. The PS3 can only get better, where the wii is at the top of its game right now. Where do they have to go for the future. Gamecube games aren't good enough to sustain a nextgen system.

» Reggie made a good funny, and well

...so exclaims the unfounded and dillusional giant douche in the post above. Care to back that up with a dose of reality? The only time I have ever seen kids system brought up is by po'd sony fans dev'r or consumer. Your version of reality clashes greatly with the sales data.

» Too bad I can't same...

for the Nintendo's GDC presentation. I was hoping for more game annoucements from them, all I get is Mario Galaxy. The ***** was a snooze fest.

by nawz - 2007-03-09 10:02
» Erm?

I love mario kart double dash, wind waker (sorta), super smash melee. Also mario super star striker is really fun!

Metroid prime is also one of my favis with mgs and a bunch of other titles i play time to time. Nevertheless GC has good games, and will continue on the wii.

Yes, it was a little heavy on the auditory presentation, but you've got to understand that that's what the GDC is for. It's the chance that developers can have to talk about what they hope to do in the future. I would assume that Sony went all E3 on this GDC because their E3 performance last year was abysmal.

while his company's greatest developer is about to start his speech, Phil is sitting front row to listen and Reggie is in the back talking down competition? Yeah, he's the man alright.

» Nintendo failed

And reggie is just a scared little *****. Nintendo have practically no worthwhile games coming out until novermber, Wii is about to hit a huge droubt.

Meanwhile, harrison announced Home which stunned many around the world as its awesomeness, Little Big Planet -- argueably one of the most interesting next gen games ever announced, and Sony's vision of empowering the user and creating social networks around games.

Miyamoto gave a charming presentation but it failed to deliver any hype, furthermore, we know all its best games aren't coming out soon. The Wii may just be an impulse buy aferall...

~Fin~ ;))))))

yeah i might have to get a ps3 to help me through the drought... when hop back onto the wii till mgs and gta come out

by TheKid - 2007-03-09 22:32
» Silly rabbit

Did you not see the sales through February?

10 million Xbox360s

5 million Wiis

2 million PS3s

yeah, Nintendo failed. Failed to lose to sony. I wish that I could outsell my competition and be called a failure.

by trulyDry - 2007-03-09 22:36
» drought?

I think you meant get a Wii. Unless you enjoy the stale PS3 lineup as it is now. I was just in Walmart not long ago. Of course the Wii display was ravaged. No consoles. There were a few lonely 60 GB PS3s and a whole lot of games but nobody even bothers to stop and look at it anymore. Kind of sad. I expected so much from Sony

by ktm911 - 2007-03-10 01:36
» yeah right

ok, when the wii lanched i was hoping to possibly score one....how ever more than 100 people all above 15 were lined up. COMON! thats gotta be a little hint!

anywaz, when i went to wall mart they were FULL of ps3's! their were no wiis, because someone just bout 1. fortunatly i have 1. And in any case, there were only 3 games that werent lanch titles. Im dead serious.

Anywaz, isn't xbox 360 and ps3 goin through a drought too? course xbox wont have it for long apparently.

by Vecha - 2007-03-10 04:47
» huh?

and the ps3 has games that are worthwhile coming out?

Sorry but motorstorm is not worth 600$

by HAXorz - 2007-03-10 05:07
» In the context of GDC...

Nintendo got pwned by Sony, as did Microsoft. They might as well have not turned up and left Sony to make their announcements.

Reggie has had some great one-liners over the years, and this isnt one of his best. "Some would say we’ve already done that." Its immature if anything, and at least Phil had the decency to ignore him.
