GameStop upping efforts to keep exclusives

Ben Kuchera likes to vote with his dollar, and with that, he prefers to keep the monopoly of gaming shops away from becoming "Only EBGameStop." It's why he prefers not to go into an EB Games or GameStop anytime soon. However, how do you deal with items exclusively up for sale only in a specific store chain?

That's the question he asks himself and others when it comes to gaming. In fact, it's already been happening with some titles, such as Chulip, Tenchu, and The Settlers:

ChulipÂ—an offbeat game involving kissingÂ—has been released in the US to the cheers of fans of quirky games. The only problem is that EBGameStop is going to be the only place to buy it. Strategy gamers will be annoyed to hear that The Settlers for the DS will also be an EBGameStop exclusive.

Sure, keeping games to yourself is sound business practice, but it's not particularly wonderful on the consumer end, and it also puts some strain on the backs of other game shops. The one thing Kuchera asks, and that we're hoping never happens, is this: Wouldn't you hate it if your favorite game was only available in one kind of store, which you never really were a fan of?

I find it interesting that they're trying to get sales of exclusive games, but how could that work?

Seeing how game companies try to get as much availability for the selling of their game (especially since the costs of the new generation of game creating is going to skyrocket in development costs), it's hard to see how this is beneficial to EB/Gamestop in the long run. Any series exclusive they'd get would evaporate through the cutting of said series due to it not making enough profit, anyway.

bah, who in their right mind would pay retail for games at best buy, etc anyway? they usually carry no selection whatsoever, only THE newest and THE most mainstream games.

trade-in credit is a load of crap but cheaper used games and buy 2 get 1, etc is always a good deal. (bring back the buy 2 get 1's gs!!)

Why in the hell would I be concerned about having to buy a game at any one particular store? It's not like the store sets the price, the developers do.

If a DS game costs 34.99 at Gamestop/EB, it's going to cost 34.99 at Best Buy/Circuit City/Etc. Why do I care who gets my money, so long as I get my game?

-believe me, they can set their own price. there is a guideline/standard market price - but they can sell the game for whatever they want. and if 1 store/chain holds a monopoly on being the only place to get "said game" they can overcharge for it if they so desire.

You shouldn't be *****ing about this. Some of these games are lucky to even be sold at EB/GS. Do you think Wal-Mart would want Chulip on their shelves? ***** no. That game will barely sell at EB, AND THIS IS COMING FROM SOMEBODY WHO BOUUGHT THE ONLY COPY AT THEIR STORE. The only places that can sell these and make a profit are places that specialize in games, that's why they're the only places to sell them.

Gamestop if they have it for $34.99 you can go anywhere else and get it for $29.99 except in very rare cases. Those corrupt asses charge that so they can do their USED games at the normal $29.99 retail price. But hey if you like losing $5 needlessly you can send me all those extra $5s you want to give to Gamestop and I'll put them to better use.

No. They can't. Period. The ONLY price that gamestop/EB sets are used game/accessory prices. New game prices come DIRECTLY from the publisher/developer, not from Gamestop Corporate.
