European videogame and computer software retail giant GAME has acquired competitor Gamestation for GBP 74 million (US$ 148 million). According to GamesIndustry.biz, the market leader has unconditionally acquired the entire share capital of Gamestation on a debt, cash and tax-free basis.

"We are delighted to bring Gamestation into our portfolio and believe it has a strong future within the group," said GAME chairman Peter Lewis. "The Gamestation business is one we have long admired and is complementary to our existing business in terms of both store portfolio and target customers."

GAME points towards Gamestation's standing among hardcore gamers as one of the key reasons for the acquisition, hence the move to keep the branding of both outlets separate. "By investing in both brands we will further enhance the group's retail strategy while continuing to deliver and broaden our consumer reach," said Lewis.

It was also speculated that U.S. retailer GameStop would also be putting in a bid for Gamestation and its 217 stores as part of their planned European expansion.

Gamestation roxxorz my boxxorz,

as for GAME, well they just plain suck!

I Wish a GAME hadn't even noticed Gamestation,

but then again who wouldn't notice Gamestation?

» Oh crap...

Well, there goes the last decent Games Store. Looks like I'm getting everything online from now on. Thank god for play.com.

Anyway this is stupid, Game stores are always just down the road from GameSation stores. They own 4 stores within about 5 minutes walk of eachother in Bradford now.

Here in Hull we have GAME, then 1 min down the road there's another GAME and then 1 min down the road in the other direction there's a Gamestation, pretty stupid really.

By 1 min i literally mean, 1 min walk, there within viewing distance of each other.

» I agree

I agree that was one of the best stores ever gone now. Hopefully they might keep it as a Gamestation but licenced under GAME LTD. But if not then its going to be rubbish as I liked the whole 'trade in your games for cash or store credit' thing which was mintage. Game is just a rip off and too expensive!

» Damn

Damn, I loved GameStation. They always spoke to you about what you were buying and actually seemed interested in the games they were selling.

I never shopped in Game or Gamestation.. Hated them both.

My local small retailer is a much nicer guy and he almost always beats them in prices.
