Game of the Year: Grand Theft Auto IV
Comments: When you look at it macroscopically, whether you enjoyed playing the game or not (let's not have personal preferences get in the way, shall we?), you can't deny the fact that Rockstar Games *did* manage to raise the bar in video game design with GTA4.

Comments: Sooo controversial, it's like Britney Spears. you know she's wrong, but you can't take your eyes off her.

Game of the Year: LittleBigPlanet
Comments: With controversy erupting at its release, its main character showing up all over the place, more costumes than any video game character - new ones every week, and gameplay unlike anything we've seen before, LittleBigPlanet is THE game of the year..
Chris C:
Game of the Year: Fallout 3
Comments: Surprise! My PS3 and 360 game of the year is also my overall game of the year! Fallout 3 is not just my game of the year, it's my "Game of the Generation... so far".

Anybody that thinks GTA IV is the best game of the year needs to play more than 3 games a year. Little Big Planet and Fallout 3 blow that game away.
ok ill admit it was a good game, and the only game worth getting a limited addition for, but its not the best game of this year. GTA4 was sort of dissapointing if u ask me. I do agree with fallout3 and lbp those are great games but what ever happend to MGS4 why is evryone pretending it doesnt exist. MGS4 Game of the year anyone??? MGS4 has a story like no other and grafix out of this world where the hell does GTA4 even come close...o wait u cant run over hookers in MGS and ITS NOT ON 360!!! I feel sad for Kojima, creating a peace of art so amazing, and nobody awards him 4 it.
Clearly little to no thought was put into any of these decisions.
but... well you know micro$oft have the money...
So yeah.
I think most people are into the hype of bashing GTA4 for being a good game over giving it credit for doing so much for a series that needed huge upgrades.
Sure. They might leave out alot of the bonus missions or the ability to purchase areas and make the character gain stats depending on if you go weight lift, etc, etc.
Seriously though. The game did so much right. Take cover behind pretty much anything. A much improved shooting system almost on par to some of the best. A completely realistic driving system. Amazing storyline that really pushes beyond what gaming really does today, and even most RPG titles don't have anything as impressive as this. Let's not forget how well developed the missions are.
So yeah. The game has very little replay value in comparison to the other GTA games, but that doesn't change the fact that it's the best in the series when it comes to the main game.
GTA4 was not the game of the year for me.
It just really wasn't.
But hey, that's cool.
I think the environment visuals in GTA were better than MGS. Only the character models let the game down.
I fully agree with you guys saying that GTA4 was the best game of the year.
And as for the little childs who arent even allowed to play call of duty.
get a homeless person to get you your games pay him 5 bucks and if he starts running trip him grab the game and jet.
works on general stores too if u know what i mean.

These comments suggest to me that these reviewers simply don't know what they are talking about. I'm not going to comment on their choices, as they are their opinions, but I will state that QJ.net is a joke.

I can't wait until something like this affects you one day so you can wake up to the real world.
if you think qj.net is a joke then gtfo.
We dont need you.
Qj doesnt need you.
The attention to detail in MGS4 is impeccable. Pull out the binocs in-game, zoom into the distance and see everything come into focus, as well as specs of dust appearing on the lens and blowing around the ground. MGS4 had zero pop-in and no noticeable slowdowns.
GTA4 was full of slow down (more on the PS3) and pop-in (more on the 360, even running off the HDD). It just didn't have the graphical clarity of MGS4. 5 minutes playing both games would show anyone this, especially as all of the MGS4 cut scenes were done with the in-game engine which is quite amazing.
"These comments suggest to me that these reviewers simply don't know what they are talking about. I'm not going to comment on their choices, as they are their opinions, but I will state that QJ.net is a joke."
hypocrite. you just did!
as i expected.
the ps3 fanboys in the site just have to deny gta4 and claim that mgs4 is the game of the year. sigh... how typically shortsighted.
mgs4 is the game of the year for the ps3. yes, i will agree on that. and in fact, i WILL gladly vote that as my personal ps3 game of the year.
but if you look at things generally speaking, mgs4 is not THE game of the year based on all aspects and all factors and on a wholistic approach, combined. on top of my vote for mgs4 as the ps3 goty, yes, it can also win the best graphics award (for all platforms). yes, it can also win the best storyline (also for all platforms).
but see, one of the biggest flaws of mgs4 was that it was too damn well written as a story (y'know what they say about having too much of a good thing...) that there was no room for anything else other than story! hahaha! and now what? anyone want to rat on that? ha! from what i've heard (in this site and others), so many ps3fanboys themselves have complained about how mgs4 is all cutscene cutscene cutscene.
it sickens me to see how the fanboys can complain about the game so so so soooo much in the past and yet now call it, hands down, the game of the year.
i'll agree with you that mgs4 graphics are by far the best in any game we've seen this year.
HOWEVER.
graphics isn't the only factor that goes into a game of the year award.
If someone thinks one game is better than another it doesn't mean you should accuse them of being fanboys just because the game they like better is a ps3 exclusive. No one was even showing the smallest trace of fanboy-ism; some thought some other games were better than GTA4. If LBP and MGS4 were for 360, I’m sure they’d be saying the same things minus the references to ps3 and that some ps3zealot would be saying some crap about 360fanboys.
Anyways, GTA4 really isn't game of the year. It’s tired and it really just hyped everyone up, made the sales… but that‘s really all it achieved… My friend bought me my copy as a gift and I played it to completion (as did he) and we’ve since agreed that it was a waste of his money. My brother doesn't even want to finish it and I've had it since it came out.
I apologize to people reading this and posts that posts like this are posted in regard to. Sometimes though…
Side note - I haven’t even played mgs4. So… stop.
p.s. had to see where these comments were going. I mean, it's a game of the year post... I'll add no more fuel to the fire though, promise.
Well thats kind of a shame that graphics don't get factored in.. I think game of the year should be based off of all the main points in a game: Gameplay, graphics, story, and sound.
Now not directed toward you trigger... I don't see how GTA IV broke any barriers. Environments weren't amazing because its in the same exact spot as the old GTA 3, graphics weren't amazing, gameplay for sure wasn't amazing (although I don't think GTA games ever had perfect or great gameplay/controls), and the story wasn't anything amazing along with the sound. I don't see how it gets to be in the top spot based off of that. I understand lots of people don't want to look like a fanboy so they pick multiplatform games, but damn, the exclusive games on both the PS3 and 360 beat GTAIV by far (at least in my opinion.) This is only my take on it but I think GTA IV was not even close to game of the year.
I agree with Hotsuma.
THIS passes for a Game of the Year article? This reads like some hack who only watches gameplay videos and other sites' reviews and thinks himself a videogame expert. This is trash. How low have you fallen, QJ?
The site was okay when the old cast was still writing for this POS. Now we're getting a Britney Spears comment in a game article?
lbp ......
makes sense they should make a version of this game for wii , 360, ps2 ,psp ,ds , 3do, gamecube, dreamcast its epic really all the people asking for mgs4 would prolli be happier with this since most haven't played the rest of the MG saga and just see a shooter that got amazing ratings
STOP BRUSHING OFF THE GAME FOR BEING CHILDISH AND RENT IT
then you will see
i didn't say that graphics aren't totally written off from the criteria of judging what makes a goty. what i said was:
"graphics *isn't the only* factor that goes into a game of the year award."
MGS4 was still a much better experience than GTA4.
"qj.net is l33t
if you think qj.net is a joke then gtfo.
We dont need you.
Qj doesnt need you."
So you think qj.net is l33t? Well, that is part of the problem; You and other people who share your enthusiasm for Internet communication colloquialisms pontificate your views as if they are just as valuable because you claim all opinions are individual and unique. I've got news for you: you're not a journalist, and the reason I come here is to read the opinions of individuals who express them according to some objective and well-defended standards rather than catering to the needs of the interested public.
Qj.net does in fact need me, because without me (the long-time frequenter of the website) Qj.net would not exist. You're absolutely right that you and your contractions-without-apostrophes don't need me, and I certainly don't need you.
"'"These comments suggest to me that these reviewers simply don't know what they are talking about. I'm not going to comment on their choices, as they are their opinions, but I will state that QJ.net is a joke.'
hypocrite. you just did!"
Actually, I evaluated them based on their comments (as far as I can tell the only justification for choosing each Game of the Year candidate), not on their opinions themselves.
"I agree with Hotsuma."
Thank you, I agree with you too.
... it seems to me the ONLY eligible candidates would be multi-platform games, which makes a lot of sense if you are establishing an objective stance for judging said games by overall influence and reception. I'm not defending Metal Gear Solid 4 as GotY for Qj.net or you, but it seems according to your analysis the gameplay is what is keeping it from GotY, which I think you should elaborate on more fully, because I cannot see the point you are trying to make.
My opinion is that what keeps MGS4 from securing the GotY award on most gaming sites is its inability to please a large audience. GTA4 virtually satisfies the fanciful needs of the typical Westerner, which largely accounts for the franchise's success. I believe they have done what they aim to do extremely well, and they should be rewarded for it. GTA4 is most often chosen as GotY because it spans several gaming platforms and appeals to a huge audience. I'm just aggravated at Qj.net for not elaborating on what makes it such a great game beyond these areas so that people who have not played the game would understand why it has been given the award and then play it.
we actually agree on this! did we just misunderstand each other back there?
(btw the comment i made above, the one that starts with "» of course ... as i expected." wasn't really directed at you.)
i definitely agree with you on your second paragraph. yes. the *entire* second paragraph. however, i never said that gta4 was my goty. so, in a sense, you misunderstood me. sorry if i couldn't get my point across clearly. your assumption of me being a "it will only be a goty candidate if it's multiplatform" person is actually wrong.
if you want my list of gotys, here it is (in no particular order):
gta4
mgs4
lbp
fable2
fallout3
left4dead
twewy (yes, a ds game!)
these are my candidates. i never explicitly mentioned which was my goty. but i'm definitely saying that it's not mgs4. in fact, i'm not even saying it's gta4. but i will admit that they are my candidates.
anyways... i'm also a bit aggravated about qj.net's commentary on why they chose this or that game. but the way i see it... i think they deliberately wanted to keep it short and simple. they aren't really obligated to give a commentary anyway. look at the oscars or whatever. when they announce the winner for a certain award (let's say, "best visual effects in a movie"), they don't *explain* why they gave that award to this or that nominee. they just... award it.
and dude cmon. qj's a blog. or a news blog, rather. whatever hahaha. but really. it's like, just the other day, i sat down with a friend over beer. and we talk about life and *****. and we got to talking about gotys. and i asked him his list. what's your psn goty? what's your handheld goty? who's your publisher of the year? etc etc etc. until eventually, we reached THE goty question. not once did we explain ourselves to each other of why we chose this or that game. it's just... a list. of awards.
I see that now, but the rest of my post still stands.
Comments: When you look at it macroscopically , whether you enjoyed playing the game or not (let's not have personal preferences get in the way, shall we?), you can't deny the fact that Rockstar Games *did* manage to raise the bar in video game design with GTA4.
Yea but did they do anything innovative? no. were the graphics any better? no. the only improvement i saw was an actual story line compared to the other gta's.
Im a wii fanboy pretty much, but I definetly think that mgs4 or littlebigplanet had far better break throughs graphics, innovation and van 10000x's more than gta4 did.
