It sure must make a whole lot of things easier if developers can just automatically convert game codes from one platform to another, right? If this is the picture we're looking at, then we should go ahead and talk to Square Enix about it. After all, they're doing it already. Their first sample: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (Wii and DS).

Echoes of Time originally started out as a DS-exclusive game, but thanks to their technology, they were able to automatically generate the Wii version. Although the Wii version does use the same data as the DS version, it still handles it a little differently, though.

This is just the beginning of the Wii/DS auto-tandem for Square Enix, we're fairly sure. Looking forward to more of these then.

mmmm

meh as long as you got the source you can do it for anything....but it is pretty impressive IF they can just do it with a program or something.

Impressive

This is a nice leap forward in programming, being able to automatically port from one console to another, with different specs, it's not as easy and simple as just having this source code. Imagine the qty of instructions, different architecture etc etc, it's literally going through every line of code and translating it. (Like french to english, can you do it, if so can you do it for every other language ?). To do this automatically, is impressive.. Nice work Indeed. Regards Ps My Opinion only.

I don't think it has much to do with the programming.

It appears it is more that they are using the same modelling data (not programming). Whether this is rendered seperate to the platform or as part of the platform I don't know. If it is seperate it's easy. If it is on the actual platform it just means they have an engine that works on both platforms. Not that impressive, but interesting to see/hear.
