EA to acquire Ubisoft? EA thinks it's still possible

EA Ubisoft - Image 1Speaking to Gamasutra about how business is going and how Electronic Arts underestimated Epic (again) and it's Unreal Engine, and about things like Spore and other IPs, EA CCO William "Bing" Gordon noted something amusing about Ubisoft - one of the other large publishers out there. The creative officer hints that EA fully acquiring Ubisoft is still possible. Here's his words:

I think everybody is for sale. I think in general, successful intellectual properties in all media are undervalued, especially in our media. There's been a lot of acquisitions, but the thing about acquisitions is that the only time it works is if you've got an intellectual property that can succeed without the people, or if the people have a ten-year career path that they're interested in at EA.

When Gamasutra asked if the acquisition would be a bad idea (since it may end up as something akin to a hostile takeover), William Gordon said that when it comes to acquisitions, one has to think if the intellectual property associated can succeed without the people, or if the important people want to get promoted in a big organization.

Rayman Raving Rabbids, Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed, all those other Ubisoft IPs all under EA - now that's a thought isn't it? Well what's your take on that possibility? Are you comfortable with all that being under EA? Let us know.

For some reason that "everybody is for sale" comment reminds this blogger of the British East India Co. but that's just probably because he's still high on Pirates of the Carribean and all that "it's just good business" stuff.

# awful moveGuest 2007-05-25 23:56
awful move if that happens no doubt ea would ruin established ubisoft titles, such as splinter cell and rainbow six, and could ruin future sequels for assasin's creed

Its better for EA to aquire Ubisoft than Microsoft or Sony for example, because when third parties aquire other third parties the competition (between consoles) is not compromised in a big way. Imagine for a moment if MS aquired EA ??? We are talking about some aggresive behaviour!! that whould end any potential competition from both Nintendo and Sony...

So my opinion is let them do what they deem appropriate...Personally I think is better if EA aquires Ubi because Ubi has great games already imagine funded titles from EA what will be like !!!!

Expect Splinter Cell 4 to turn into Splinter Cell 2007, 2008, 2009 etc etc

Screw EA, I pray this does not happen.

EA ruin almost every console game they make that has any potential at all. They should stick to PC games, it's all they're any good at.

At least if Microsoft got it, it would get the funding and probably just end up tied to the 360 and PC games, instead of every game getting 20 releases a year on each console with nothing ever changed.

# Ubi churn out a lot of ***** anyway imoGuest 2007-05-26 00:46
Personally I don't rank ubi much higher than EA. For example, Splinter Cell had 3 sequals last gen and thats only because it only started coming out a little later on in the gen. Infact look at all the tom clancy games, they all come out annually anyway.

# LOL, like EA could buy ubisoftGuest 2007-05-26 02:04
Too late, ubisoft is now TOO BIG to be bought, anyway they are so good at managing that they do more titles every years, so ubisoft is strong!

I hate to say this but I hope EA does buy out Ubisoft as of late many of Ubi's games have not been that great. So if this helps makes the games better I am all for this.

Plus this means many people from Ubi will leave to start up there own company so new games come out of this.

So EA buy out Ubi quick.

Really don't like the *****yness of the guy talking, I mean just prooves that EA are in there not for the gamers and what they want, just pure profit. They have no respect for us, other publishers or the people that work for them. I really hope Ubisoft don't fall to them.

Electronic Arts has stifled Creativity ever since they started their "Take ove the gaming world" regime. Ubisoft is smarter than that and will not sell to anyone. they're making a TON of money... mor than they would ever make by selling out. It just goes to show you how evil EA is by their "Everyone has a price" comment.

Ubisoft already has a Splinter Cell game out every year almost

Splinter Cell - November 18, 2002

Pandora Tomorrow - March 23, 2004

Chaos Theory - March 29, 2005

Double Agent - October 18, 2006

and the fifth one is set for the end of 2007

I'm not even comfortable with EA's existence, why would I want them to have Assassin's Creed or Splinter Cell? That's exactly what we need, more games licensed by EA! Guaranteed to work (half of the time) after the 20th update!

EA ruins games....period. It is tru that Ubi has as many sequels as EA, but for the most part, their sequels are actually sequels, and make leaps of improvement from game to game. EA only polishes graphics from sequel to sequel....i.e. Madden. Think about it, MAdden is EAs baby, and look how little they put into it. Imagine what they'll do to "adopted" IPs. Anybody remember that great game on the Nintendo 64 called Golden Eye, made by Rare? What happened when EA got a hold of it? It turned in to garbage.
