EA dismayed over its review scores |
Ó
Electronic Arts, the world's biggest third party game publisher, has expressed dismay over the average scores of its releases. This comes by way of their Chief Executive Officer - John Riccitiello himself. It has been pointed out to Riccitiello that the average review scores for EA's recent releases in aggregate site Metacritic has dropped from 77 to 72. The CEO didn't take it lightly and held nothing back in his response.
"There is nothing acceptable about that," he comments. "Our core game titles are accurately measured and summarized by these assessments, and that is a very big deal."
Reviews, as one may guess, have a great influence on how the video game market reacts to products. Scathing reviews could spell the doom of a project that took years to complete.
Analysts and critics have pointed to the EA Sports division of the company as its weakening link. Once known for excellent sports sims, some now look at EA Sports as a factory of annual game rehashes with little more than updated rosters to offer.
This development could not come at a worse time as competition is building up to kick EA off the hilltop. Activision and Vivendi are in the process of merging, while Ubisoft and Take-Two are also shoring up their portfolios.
A score of 72 isn't bad per se, but in a console generation which sees premium games launched at an almost weekly basis, this score is looking more mediocre than ever. We'll see what EA does about it soon enough.

It's about time they realize that their games has been getting worse and worse overall. Maybe now they will do something about it. While at it, improve the games for the ps3.
amen to that... amen
Finally it's so true, the quality of their work have being going from bad to worse and in my opinion game developers in general are getting to dependant on the fact that they can release shabby games and patch them later, and EA is becoming one of the worst for it. The games should come out great with no need for patching anyway, the patches should only come to add new features to create a new interest in the game. And in some cases the games come out shabby and don't get patched at all, because there to busy concentrating on the sequal 5 days after the sequal to the sequal was released - GET A GRIP
Make mediocre games and you'll get mediocre scores from reviewers. If they want their score to rise, they should stop releasing 4million copies of the same product slightly changed.
Wait a minute, that article can go either way. Is John Riccitiello upset at the reviewers or is he upset at his own company for producing sub-par games? Glen didn't bother giving the whole story: "But even though Riccitiello is concerned with his company's lowish Metacritic scores, he says he won't chase numbers." It seems from that he's not too worried about it.
I think he's upset at the company, maybe he should pay the reviewers abit more to get better reviews - we all know this goes on behind the scenes.
Make better products.
EA game ='s RENTER
EA aim their games at the biggest market possible...the average user. Consider the type of person that writes the reviews for these games....are they the average user? I doubt it. I would guess they come from the same school of thought as anyone committed enough to be reading online reviews etc the people that really appreciate gaming rather than the latest sports or film license. Aim at the average user you'll get the largest market share (and of course the biggest bucks) but average reviews. Aim at the true gamers and you will acheive the scores you're looking for!
This year's EA games are better than last's by a mile. Still not very good sure, but better. So why the drop?
@ geowarrior: Dammm....are u some kinda professional analyst or something? If not you should be.
1000 is an accurate score...hehe.
Come on, EA is better than that :p. If only a bit...
If their games weren't ***** then they'd get better review scores? Logic dictates, EA...
because its more fun to play NFS underground 2 than all the sequels combined. because nba 2k8 is unimproved and lacking features compared to nba 2k7 yet it still makes the nba live 08 look butt ugly. because the sims keps expanding the same engine. because each and every game they release on a genre has a better version created other game company, such as NBA and so on and so forth.
they knew all the time, they like many other "kings of the hill" thought that the formula that got them there was enough. Instead of constantly inovating the genre (madden, live)
Maybe now they'll start making less dumbed down mass market garbage. I don't understand how they keep getting good sales when with every game they release there's at least 4 games in each genre that are better. I guess it just comes down to marketing muscle.... Skate was pretty good though....... and Burnout.
If they remade Road Rash and use some next gen stuff on it, than that could help sales for them. I mean Road Rash is and always will be the best game i ever played from them. And the only one, since most of their games isn't good.
