Heads up, cheap gamers. Dylan Cuthbert doesn't like you. Well, not all of you, just the ones who are unwilling to spend even US$ 10 on a game.

Q-Games founder and Pixeljunk creator Cuthbert was asked in a recent Develop interview about what disappoints him most in the video game industry. This was his answer:

Gamers complaining about our games being too expensive at 10 dollars. I’m not sure this is an industry problem, but it seems ridiculous that people complain about that price point.

Disappointments -- and piracy -- aside, Cuthbert doesn't seem to have lost his drive to make games. In the same interview, he mentioned that Q-Games is "always working on secret stuff" and that "more PixelJunk is definitely in the pipeline."

He can forget about getting any profit from me. Until PSN and Live start charging appropriate rates for different regions just like retail copies there is no fucking way anyone from those parts of the world will buy it.

Genuine GTA IV PC is around 10$ in India. No farkin way am I gonna pay 10$ on PSN for some bullshit like PixelJunk.

not too long ago you could have bought GTA 4 on Steam for US$7.50 during it's winter sale. But this is PC, software is always more reasonably priced comes down faster. Probably so you'd have more money to build a new PC to keep up to date...

Damn he must really hate that site cheapassgamers. People use all kinds of surveys and referral programs with eachother to get consoles and games completely for free.

And then there's the whole fact that the only profit from used games goes to the gamestore.

This guys just blowing steam. Cheap gaming is nothing new, not because of piracy or anything else. But I agree with Torch. Pixeljunk is shit compared to what $10 elsewhere can get you.

Show me where i can get decent games on physical media for $10 and i'll bite your arm off for it, but to me digital downloads are like throwing your money away because you only own it under specific drm terms and can never resell it.

Honestly, PJM is worth $30 imo, but having not playing PJS... I really have no clue if it's worth $10 yet.

You also can't compare a $10 download game to a $60 disc based game! You could take ALL of the Pixel Junk games and put them in one bundle and it wouldn't compare to that of a $60 hit game.

The sweet spot for small download games is $5-$7 and anything above that is required to blow me the f*** away.

this can go either way... a lot of the games we see at that price point dont have a ton to do... look at "braid" its a fun game, has some replayablity but once you beat it youll know if you want to go back for the speed run and really after that its hardly gonna pay back the 15 usd i spent *the game it self says it can be beat in 45 mins or less...*

this can be said about a lot of other psn titles, but this cant be the case for them all...

PJ shooter *this is the only PJ game i got into*: Limited playability (atleast single side), you should get most of the trophies in 1 full cycle, only 15 stages which is only about 4 hours of playability *better than most psn games though* home rewards *many like myself have a glitch problem with them* waiting for game DLC since the game ends with a TBC... price 10 usd

japan psn store

Spelunker black: 100 floors in single player (they get new aspects if you do another cycle), 100 similar floors in online/offline co op (minor differences to huge differences), has a plat trophy and average time to get it is 22+ hours. Is a port but features a lot of things like updated/classic graphics, and spelunker is not a game we see being remade to death *like sonic*, 200 mural pieces to collect to see a odd image. Home rewards, and a theme. Price 15.00 - 17.00 *depends on how you convert the yen*

when you look at 1 thing or another its not a big deal just... you can always find a better deal which PJ is fun but not worth 10usd when they got full out plans for DLC since after that its gonna cost what Spelunker black does which it doesnt meet in content

It's ok to be able to beat a game in 45 mins, as long as there is a mechanic built in to keep you playing multiple 45 min games. Usually this is trying to beat your old hi-score or time. The best arcade games were those you could beat in 45min to an hour.

Still when you can get games like Lumines or Super Stardust for $10 that are so complete and engaging, it makes you think that arcade type games should be $5 max.

It's called the value of a dollar, some people are just not willing to blow 10 bucks on something that is comparable to a bucket of shit.

I can go to a swap meet or a pawn shop and use that same 10 bucks and get 10 retro games that I could definitely get more enjoyment out of than PixelJunk.

So really it is up to you whether or not you spend $10 on a bucket of shit.

Normally I would agree that PSN and Live games are overpriced shit, but PSN has several amazing digi games that are worth more than $10. flOwer is one of my favourite games and I play MW2 and U2 as well. Pixel Junk Monsters, Eden, and Shooter are all worth $10. Comparing it to GTA 4 for PC is like saying I won't buy a new car because I can get this 1970 pinto for $25 bucks. lol.

If a game provides a fun and lasting experience then is it not worth $10?

Yeah, flower is totally worth the money.

Also fat princess is a steal at $15, I would pay $25 for it....also Wipeout.

Just depends how big the game is and how much playtime you get out of it....I havn't played any Pixeljunk games so I can't say if they are worth it.

Remember if you are super cheap and have a PS3 you can split the price of games with a good buddy or two and then share the game amongst each other.

This is why I (heart) the PSOne Classix on the PSP. They a re tremendous value. Those are $6 a pop and stuff like Crash Bandicoot, FFVII, MGS, Legacy of Kain, RE1/2/3, are all worth way more than they cost. A PSN games has to be pretty good to compete with those in the bargain basement. The PS1 games all control well on the PSP too because they were designed for the PS1 controller which was not dual analog initially.

Bottom line: As the industry gets bigger, competition goes way up! So, with lots of other options some of the rinky dink "also rans" like PixelJunk are going to get weeded out. Pretty soon Dylan Cuthbert will have to scrape for a $10 game and maybe he'll be more sypathetic! LOL.

It isn't that I wouldn't pay the 10$ to get a damn game, it is that I CAN'T. I'm lucky to have a PSP at all, over the years I have spent my time trading in games and systems I've gotten from friends and stuff to save for something like this, get a PSP, and can't afford the games. It isn't MY fault, it is my dead-beat parents and their inability to go to college.

Actually, you CAN get a job, you're just too fucking lazy. Your parents don't owe you anything, their only obligation is to put a roof over your head and food in your stomach. I can't blame them for not doing shit for you, really. You're nothing but a little twat who needs the shit beaten out of him. They won't go back to college, so what? You think that them going to college is going to get you video games? LMAO! Your parents aren't the lazy ones. It's you who are too damn lazy. 15 is the youngest you can be to look for work, all you need is a signed piece of paper. Somehow, I get the feeling that even if you were older, you wouldn't have a job. People just don't like dicks.

How do you think I got my PSP in the first place?
Every chance I get I find some petty way to get some cash, and get something in my stomache. Anything left over I save up.
If you honestly think I'm spoiled then you don't know how my life is.I HAVE NO MONEY, My parents dont either, they don't care about me or my sister. Everything I have, I got on my own, maybe a little help from my sister, that is it. Stop being such a douche bag and look at things from a different angle for once in your miserable life.

How you got your PSP in the first place?

Answer: " I have spent my time trading in games and systems I've gotten from friends and stuff" you waited for someone to GIVE you stuff.

"you don't know how my life is":

Answer: it's obvious that you have the internet and a computer as well as heat and electricty. So you do have a roof Over your head and most likely food.

i do see it from your angle ... you think you are are owed any thing your little heart desires.(NOT!!!)

So grow up.

They are horrible alcoholics who can't even afford to pay off the rent half the time because they would rather spend the money on pot and beer than food for me or my sister. CPA said we can't live here any more, I called them so my sister and I can live somewhere better. I didn't mean to come off as a spoiled brat or anything, but it is true, my parents suck! XD

Has this guy ever thought that some people don't have enough money to shell out for a bunch of $50, $60 games?

Heck, I personally tend to not buy a game unless it goes on sale on Steam for 50% off or less. I can't afford to throw a bunch of money into 5-10 $60 games a year. That's way too much money that I will never have.

# RE: RE: Dylan Cuthbert: Cheap gamers disappoint meAshTR 2010-01-16 20:04
Forgot to add...People usually wait until games get below $10 because they don't have the money to blow on tons of games.

This crap about finding another hobby? That's retarded. Video games are made for all sorts of people to enjoy, no matter if they're $1, $5, $10, or $60.

absolutely right, I buy 1-3 games a year MAX for the current consoles. At $60 a piece, you can easily spend more than the cost of the console in 5 games. I have close to 60 ps2 games and only 8 ps3 games. Most Ps2 games bought recently in the $10-20 range.

Anyway i would buy games for $10, it has a feeling of genuinity =]

Of course, I hate downloadable games and I only buy them or dlc if I really REALLY want them... like can't stand to live without them (I'm exaggerating, of course, but a game or dlc has to be exceptional before I'll buy a drm'd out digital copy).

no way thats why i have a pc for gaming becasue you can get better games for the same price as the games from psn store
for example you can get assasins creed 1 on pc for £9
why would i pay that for a game that is a lot shorter and hasnt been as well made

dont get me wrong im quite happy to pay upto £30-40 on a game
but not on one that will last 3-7 hours

if they brought out a game that took 500-1000 hours to complete storyline id quite happily pay £100+ for it (as long as it looks good)

Sadly we live in the internet age. Everyone expects everything to be free... and judging by all the kiddies roaming xbox live I assume they're all broke too. Too busy pwning n00bs in COD to get a job. Renting works fine too if you're on console. Most games only have a 7 - 10 hr investment of time in them. Buy the multiplayer games.

If they want my money, the games have to be special, and worth spending my time on. Pixeljunk games have done nothing to entice me into buying their games... I won't be experiencing anything superior than I already have with AAA titles or classics. Make something new and good, then you can whine about how nobody is buying it.

All you people who are complaining about how the game would be cheaper overseas...Stop being cheap. You're happy buying food, clothes and other stuff in your country, you should be shelling out for the games you want as well. If you think the prices in India are so much better, move there. If not, you're paying the rates that are available in your country.
And $10 for a game is NOT much money. I spent $10.40 on a coke and a kebab the other day, for the effort that goes into making a game you're getting pretty damn good value.

# Price ConversionGuest 2010-01-17 18:53
I'm ok with paying full price for a game, it's just the price conversion annoys me. It was quite prevalent during the Steam Winter sales, a game would go on sale in the US for $9.99, and would go on sale in the UK for around £7-£9.99. It's fair enough that there are differences in game prices in massively disparate countries, but between the US and UK it should be a straight currency conversion. Especially as they didn't even have to ship it to me.

dont get into the biz unless you know what you are doing. He lost money on a game that he had to pay $2,000 US to get rated, so now hes bitchin. the game is ok. should've only cost two or three hundred to have someone make. so total 2,500 at the most. If he was sure he could make ten to one hundred times that amount back then he'd be on the right track. he took a chance.. so f**k him.

If i can get the same enjoyment from an hour on newgrounds, I wont pay $10, I got PJ Eden and it made me sad. Now I only get DL content for stuff I've seen played and looks good. Aside,I think his idea here is people would complain if U2 came out at $15. If you cant afford the game, dont complain about it being too expensive. If the game doesnt meet the price tag, like Trine when it first came out, then you have all the right in the world. But please dont say...I can buy a PS1 game for 10 dollars and have more fun! Why should I get a new game for the same? The fact that a new game is the same price at launch as 2 gen old games is actually pretty amazing given the biz.

I dont usually get ahold of much cash, but at least I pay for my games. Well... it's kinda easy getting ahold of any games I want working at a gamestop. If I see a game I want I can usually just play it in-store, or just buy it at teh end of the month. (When my savings are just big enough to get a game or 2.)
It's fun, but I started playing Super Metroid on my PSP and some kid asked me how I was playing SNES on there, my manager got mad at me since I'm not supposed to talk about that crap to customers while on-duty.
Recently bought Silent Hiill 3, FFX, and Me &My Katamari.
Waiting for Silent Hill Shattered Memories to come out for PSP/PS2 so I can get it since I don't have a Wii.

In any case, I can see how not buying a game when a perfectly good flash port can be found online, but at the same time, if you want that developer to do well you gotta support them by buying games.

Look at Ubisoft,,, Didn't they just lay off a ton of people cause they couldn't afford to pay them all? Sad really, if more people bought their games then they'd do better with stuff like that...

But I can't forget the quality of the game itself. If the game in question is complete shit, of course nobody will buy it, more pirates are going to just ISO it to see how it is, then dump it off cause of how crappy it is.

Now I don't mind ISO's, what does bug me is how people don't have the common decency to at least buy the game if they like it. (Like what I did with Monster Hunter Freedom way back in the day.) Instead, if they like it, they keep the ISO/CSO and never purchase the game in real life.
If you like something support it!

That's what I say.

If you liked the game, go buy it.

It's sad seeing that people only pirate games and not buy them.

WTG PixelJunk trying to drum up business by insulting potential customers! AGAIN. LOL. Great idea!

Jeez... these a-holes really feel like they're entitled to your $$$.

When I saw the headline on my RSS reader, I thought "I bet this is probably that PixelJunk a**wipe complaining about his company failing again". And sho nuff...

Bottom Line: Boycott PixelJunk. The market is already glutted enough with retarded "casual" games, anyway, such that there's absolutely no reason to give your hard earned money to a giant douche.

I never played it, or bought it, saw a review for it... I've made better flash games in school than this.
