Did you know: Nintendo had another handheld but canned it |
Ó
Did you know that Nintendo actually started development on a new handheld, but eventually scrapped it? President Satoru Iwata revealed this himself in an interview with CNBC.According to his revelation, the company did have another handheld gaming system already completed in the past three years. However, they decided not to release it. Said Iwata:
In the history of Nintendo, there are several such examples. But when we are launching new hardware, the most important thing is to sustain the momentum. If introducing new hardware won't do anything to do that, well..."
He did not explain further as to why the project was canceled, or even what it was supposed to be called.

I'd be tempted to believe it was the next GameBoy, but the DS's success has probably made them abandon that plan and just act as though the DS was always intended to be the successor to the Gameboy Advance instead.

The proper time to introduce a new handheld would probably next year or the year after. Mention that one is in development so that current game development can slow down. Show specs and release it the year after when people are sick of the DS. Also, it would probably be DS compatible (to keep that crowd). Lets not forget to mention that any system beginning development now would be better than anything started years ago.
Bottom line, Nintendo sort of dug themselves into a hole with their systems being so successful. In order to get out of it they have to think long and hard on a follow up just as phenomenal.

And yeah, they were planning on maintaining both a DS and a Gameboy presence in the handheld market, but the DS was much more of a success than they had anticipated, and decided to just keep it at that.
