A chorus of time-bending angels have come to the QJ offices today. Square Enix has decided to pre-empt its countdown site by sending out a press release that confirms the development of Chrono Triggerfor the DS.

Chrono Trigger will carry the exact same story it had when it first came out in 1995 - that of a brave party of inadvertent time travelers who are tasked with saving past, present, and future - with a couple of extras thrown in for good measure. Below are the features announced for the title:
  • A masterpiece with an engaging and unparalleled storyline, leading to the discovery of multiple epic conclusions to a journey that transcends time
  • An unprecedented and inspiring musical score created by Yasunori Mitsuda
  • Intriguing battle system made possible by the unique combination of the Active Time Battle system and Tech skills
  • Famed character designer Akira Toriyama lends his signature art style to create the vibrant world that has captivated gamers around the world
  • Taking advantage of the Nintendo DS hardware, CHRONO TRIGGER makes its way onto the portable platform with all-new dual screen presentation and Touch-Screen functionality
  • A brand new dungeon and a Wireless Play mode adds exciting new dimensions to this timeless classic
The game is set for a Holiday season release, which should make it the perfect gift for DS owners who loved the original back in is heyday. In any event, we'll get you more screens and information as they become available, so stick around for more.

» Manohmanohmanohman....

So if Japan's getting it later this year... When do we get a localized release? Wish Square Enix would reveal more... and man am I dying for a screenshot right now

From what it looks like, it seems to be "just another port" (with some bonus material), but I really want to see how they're going to bring dual screen functionality into the game.

Also... I wonder if the anime cutscenes from the PS1 re-release will be in the DS version too. Sigh... Good times, good times...

» Well...

The wireless thing sounds very interesting, but it sounds like it's just gonna be a straight port which, to be honest, is incredibly disappointing. I've already played through it about 4 times now. With the Final Fantasy games being updated, I would've loved for this to be updated too.

We should all be happy that it isn't a sequal or port to/of Chrono Cross. I'd prefer if it's 2d, with HQ sound. A direct port isn't that bad, considering the game is more than ten years old. What we need is CT2 =) writing out the story that CC added. Izuna out

» Just one extra dungeon?

I am sorry, but just one more dungeon and a touch screen interface (and possibly better sound) will not be enough to revive this classic. I mean, EVERYBODY has played this game to death already and knows the plot and various areas by heart now. What this game needs is more content. By content I mean a larger world to explore, at least 10 new dungeons, plenty of side quests, and perhaps a couple of new characters who are as bad ass as Magus.

I am not saying rewrite the story or do anything that requires an overhaul of the game, but when people purchase this game they will more likely do so if it is more than just a straight port with a couple of bells and whistles.
