Capcom president: American publishers focus on money, not making great games

Capcom - Image 1In GameDaily's "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" feature, Capcom founder Kenzo Tsujimoto talked about a few of the differences between American and Japanese game publishers. Here's a snippet off of the feature:

The chief difference between American and Japanese game publishers: In the United States, publishers are very successful – they're run by professional management. They focus on money, not making great games.

On our side, we always operate under the assumption that there's a high possibility of losing money, but that's just our style. American publishers make games so everyone can play. The Japanese – especially Capcom – favor the hardcore gamer.

While this is obviously just a generalization, there are indeed a few video game publishers that focus more on the financial aspect of the industry rather than on being innovative and delivering good games to the gaming public.

And one other thing, although this isn't really that big of a deal. Just us being nitpicky. That last part sounds kind of weird, since if you guys remember, Capcom's press release announcing that Devil May Cry 4 will be going multiplatform includes the following line:

Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible.

Capcom's take on the whole affair is also reminiscent of this line of thinking. Another Capcom press release from March 20 (again about Devil May Cry 4) has this line at the end:

Capcom will continue to produce titles that appeal to users while pursuing a multiplatform strategy to help enhance profits.

Judging by Tsujimoto's earlier statements, wouldn't that actually place them more in the "American" style category? Leave a comment below and share your thoughts.

» Idiot

Blow me. This jackass thinks that American publishers are only making games for money and not great innovative ones. What of games like Oblivion, Psychonauts, Psi Ops, Bioshock, etc? "On our side, we always operate under the assumption that there's a high possibility of losing money, but that's just our style. American publishers make games so everyone can play. The Japanese – especially Capcom – favor the hardcore gamer." Which is why you guys closed down Clover Studios and Studio 8 because they weren't bringing in the money you wanted. Great oxymoron.

I also don't see how this guy could sit there and slam the Western gaming market when he's making most of his money from it. Capcom's pretty much in business because of the American and European markets. Games like Dead Rising, RE4, Lost Planet, etc were all hits because of the US and European markets. Last time I checked, none of these games were hits in Japan, not even Okami. If the US and European gaming markets ceased to existed, Capcom would have crumbled long ago. The prime reason why Capcom is making so many sequels to games like DMC and RE is because they sell. Is it not? When are wee going to get God Hand 2, PN03 sequel, Okami 2, Maximo 3, etc? Oh, that's right. You aren't planning to make sequels to these games because they didn't sell as well as your other franchises. Complete contradicition

How about instead of wagging your finger in people's faces, you find out ways to get your great games to sell to a worldwide audience instead of certain regions. Dumbass.

by Madlax - 2007-03-29 23:51
» Actualy its true to some extent...

Capcom realized this difference in strategy and changed the way they operate to a similar way to the american publishers and gamemakers

the result clover was closed, more action story-less crapy games, excellent sales on the 360 platform becuz they are designing brainless bashing games that suits steorotypes

so basicly capcom changed, they are now more american like....less story telling, less innovation, more acton....[more money from drones]

by Nameless - 2007-03-29 23:53
» ....?

Just because Capcom stated a LINE about making profits, suddenly you guys are having fits about how they're suddenly contradicting themselves.

For you, Beem2, calm down and control your anger issues. Seriously.

Suda 51, of Grasshopper Studios and creator of critically acclaimed "artistic" title Killer7:

"Suda turned to the role of game directors in forcing the industry forward. He separated directors into two different categories: "business-oriented" and "artist-type." According to Suda 51, all game directors need to be business oriented, because without profits future games cannot be made. However, he made it quite clear that at the same time, directors must be able to revert to being "artist-type," in order to come up with unique ideas, and thereby push the industry forward."

say "americans suck" and there's always someone to take the piss... listen up, yo, you do suck in loads of things, not just that. end of story.

i think it's as simple as that: capcom aims to make good games -- not only selling titles --, but for as many as possible public (therefore appeal to all users), and in the end, make money. everybody needs money, right?

by Dante - 2007-03-30 02:03
» I`m just sad

that DMC didn`t stay a PS3 ONLY Game.

by yu - 2007-03-30 02:30
» The reason the PS3 is rubbish

Actually its because the PS3 sales are LOW as hell. In the USA alone the 360 is outselling the PS3 in Japan and USA combined, Capcom know the PS3 is not a profit making console for devolopers even Valve looks like they are not putting online on the PS3 version....

by HAHA - 2007-03-30 02:34
» I agree; YOU ARE SAD

Why cant everyone enjoy it? Why can developers make money?

by Shawn - 2007-03-30 02:48
» It makes no sense

If you actually think about the statment it makes no sense anyway... how do you get a best selling aka money making game? Make it good! Blizzard did not get to where they are today by turnung out crap games.

by TheSh0wstopper - 2007-03-30 02:59
» American made = Sh1t

sorry guys but I have to agree. American companies want to make profits not great games. Look at EA for example they release crap after crap after crap, which is the reason UbiSoft is coming after their throne. This also flows over to hardware divisions. 360 is made by Microsoft an american company. As far as software goes it provides the best selection at the moment, and Xbox live is lights out amazing... but the hardware is a piece of crap compared to the Japanese made PS3. PS3 gives the most absolute BANG for your buck. Microsoft did not make a "Next Gen" console they made a "Next Profit" console. They made a console that would appeal to us "cheap Americans". Which is why 360 is winning in the U.S. but will lose in all other parts of the world. And that will be the outcome of this war, The 360 WILL win in America but PS3 will win everywhere else.

But this is a little hypocritical coming from a company that just disbanded one of their most original divisions (Clover) because their games (while amazing) where not overly profitable.

by mik3yl3 - 2007-03-30 03:45
» oh man

whatever, it's all about money now. nothing is exclusive unless it's first party. i'm over it. as long as sony doesn't lose Square...then it's all good!

by hmm - 2007-03-30 05:30
» well then

Okay so I guess it's true. For the most part Capcom STARTS off thinking of the game, RE4, Veiwtifull Joe, DMC and makes a killer awesome game... "Hey wait" says Capcom "We just made a good amount of money off these maybe we should make some more off them" Bam! Multiplatform. So I guess it's true they first make the game then start thinking of the money.

I don't know in the end every buisness thinks of the all might dollar and for those who say they don't are just outright lieing in your face. Buisnesses aren't buisnesses without an income.

by hmm - 2007-03-30 05:33
» Sorry but

Sony has been slowly losing Square Enix for a few months now. Mainly to the DS and with the popularity of Wii and the 11 million user base of 360. Square Enix may be making more games for everyone and not just Sony in fact they may make PS3 games out on 360 as well.

» Ifiot

Who cares? You only buy ps3 only games?

by Seoulfood - 2007-03-30 05:58
» what he says is true

Because Capcom became a really westernized company. So yea, American companies care more about money, and Capcom is one of them.

by 360 fan - 2007-03-30 06:16
» Backward

Wow, that guys statement is a polar opposite of what I have been saying the last few years.

I once was a devoted playstation player, but I am sick and tired of playing all these half-finished japanese games. Every game that comes from japan seems like they had a good idea going, but they always leave me wanting... a lot. More story, more/better control, online support, etc.

In the last several years, the bulk of my gaming money has gone into PC and Xbox purchases, because American developers provide a more complete and satisfying game experiance.

As popular as japanese RPGs are, such as Final Fantasy, I am sick and tired of just "walking down a road" throughout the entire game. I am sick of doing gay things like chocobo races to get the best weapon. Non-JP RPGs, such as Eldar Scrolls, add the freedom that all RPGs need.

I can rant for hours about this, but the poor quality of japanese games is the #1 reason I have no interest in owning a PS3. The last JP game in history that was deserving of a 10/10 rating came out about 10 years ago.

by lol - 2007-03-30 06:23
» lol

LOL you dont know what youre talking about. Crap games sellls sell all the time. Enter the Matrix sold 4 mil copies, Superman 64 sold a few million, and those are just the notorious ones.

by 360 fan - 2007-03-30 06:24
» just a little more

I also want to point out, that 15 years ago, while japanese developers were producing these incredibly linear singleplayer games, american developers were creating the origins of online play. While JP developers were still making 2d games, american developers were inventing the 3d environment. The most technologically advanced game engines in the world today, are american products.

by fools - 2007-03-30 06:25
» orz

You guys are dumb if you think what he said wasnt true. Look at teh way for teh longest time, most JP companies do exclusives to maximize the game on that console. While ***** companies liek EA turn out crap aafter crap multiplatform, catered to the lowest system first...

by DragoBreed - 2007-03-30 08:28
» Thats why japanese make crapy games

Sorry to disagree. It's about money, as everything in this world. "Art" my ass. That's why japanese developers make crapy sexy games like DOA Extreme and Rumble Roses (even Sexy Beach on PC!). Japanese developers are now lagging behind developers from America, and Europe. Even Konami's Kojima accepts that!

by WTF - 2007-03-30 10:36
» Are you retarded?

If you sell a commodity, you're trying to make money, period. I'm sure all of you who comment who have a job don't wake up everyday saying to yourself "gee, I'm working for the sheer enjoyment of working, and money isn't involved at all!" Anyone who gobbles up as much of their own bull as CAPCOM head honchos apparently do, are destined to flunder when they turn on the people they pretend to support. Thanks for nothing CAPCOM!

by Seoulfood - 2007-03-30 11:21
» naw

Square never really left Nintendo's side. It's been constantly supporting Nintendo through the GBA and a little bit through the Cube. It only makes sense that DS will get some titles too. I don't doubt that some 360 games will come one day, but Square supports Sony a huge amount.

by Seoulfood - 2007-03-30 11:23
» well..

It also depends on how crappy your job is. I can't really complain about mine.

by Seoulfood - 2007-03-30 11:27
» you cant really use Kojima as an example

because his games are at least 80% cinema driven. MGS games are about as Japanese as they get... without delving into sex party/dating sims.

by r - 2007-03-30 14:19
» I'd have to agree

I too am sick of Japanese games, I guess constant RPG releases, each the same as the last, is okay for some, but not for me. It's always same-old same-old, some fruity guy who looks like a girl wields some impossibly over sized sword and must travel down an incredibly linear path and kill some emo guy/guy who looks like a girl who ALSO wields some impossibly over sized sword. It's just getting old, come up without something new.

Elder Scrolls, like you said, offers people the freedom that RPGs should have. Like in JRPGs, in ES you become a demi-god but unlike in JRPGs you can get there any way you want. You can be the spawn of evil or a saint, a thief or a philanthropist. You aren't forced to play as a certain character with a certain personality. The same goes for games like KoTOR, After KoTOR I just can't play a JRPG, they just feel obsolete.

I am also getting pretty sick of the people who go on and on about how "all FPS games are the same". If you took the time to play them, you'd see the differences between games like Halo and Prey etc. Nothing about them is alike.

by Nameless - 2007-03-30 15:33
» Hahah

I like how all of you act like since there's money involved, people MUST be selfish money-grubbing misers. Like people can't overcome base desires or something, or that they can't prioritize more than one thing.

Seriously. It makes me laugh.

by whahahaha - 2007-03-31 03:47
» mutliplatform

EA,THQ,Activisi on,Ubisoft

THey're alllllllll going multi-platform to sell more games..

And they're alll american publishers

by awesome-o - 2007-04-11 11:23
» duuuude...

As a whole, yes, there are SOME innovative American games... but he is not talking about Americans period. Rather the publishers who focus mostly on the money aspect of things...

Hell I'll mention a few heavy hitters and you tell me how American they aren't: GOD OF WAR, GRAND THEFT AUTO, HALO... end of argument.

You really need to stop thinking anybody is talking about EVERYONE... nobody is attacking your precious country.

No wonder wars get started... it's because of guys like you trying to pick up fights.

Damn.
