Rondo of Swords screenshot - Image 1Atlus just announced that it picked up another turn-based strategy RPG for the Nintendo DS, this time from the makers of other solid titles such as Raiden Fighters Aces and Operation Darkness, developer Success. Rondo of Swords, to be released this April 15, boasts of its deep story, complex gameplay mechanics, and a huge roster of characters.

Unlike Luminous Arc which was also published by Atlus, Rondo of Swords offers more than linear combat. The game employs the Route Maneuver System that makes players consider where they'll place their characters. Quoting Rondo of Swords' website, "In this game... moving is attacking!"

Similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, characters here don't just fight all the time - they also run errands. When you don't want allies to participate in battle, you can send them to quests, training exercises, shopping sprees, and even the journey of trials which leads to job class changes.

Beyond its rich arsenal of skills and magic, Rondo of Swords also involves stealth in the battlefield. There's the Momentum Counter for each character, and if you fill it up by doing certain actions or using items, your guy will attract enemy attacks. Otherwise, with the help of skills such as Hide, you get to put fragile casters out of reach or make warriors unseen.

Another feature we're excited about is the OverBreak (OB). Akin to Final Fantasy's famed Limit Breaks and Luminous Arc's wittingly named Flash Drives, characters in Rondo of Swords have special abilities they can unleash in battle when their OB gauges fill up. OBs have three ranks, and using them at peak produces the best results.

Extensive gameplay aside, Rondo of Swords doesn't fall short on the story side. It starts off as nothing groundbreaking - the Kingdom of Bretwalde is in trouble, its princess was kidnapped, and you as the knight leader Serdic will have to do something about it. The cool part is it's up to you how the story progresses and ends, since there'll be multiple storylines and endings.
