Video Game Industry Analyst - Michael Pachter - Wii Fit and Grand Theft Auto 4 to top May NPD software sales - Image 1It won't be long until we get the official sales numbers for the video game industry from the NPD Group for the month of May, which means that it's time yet again for another round of predictions from our friendly neighborhood analysts.

For April, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicted that the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360. He was wrong on that count, so it probably isn't surprising that he isn't standing up for the PS3 now, saying that the Xbox 360 outsold the Sony console for the month of May.

SimExchange, on the other hand, believes that the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 in May, although also only marginally. Here are the estimates that analysts have for the month of May:

Wii - Wedbush: 750,000, simExchange: 744,000
DS - Wedbush: 550,000, simExchange: 510,000
Xbox 360 - Wedbush: 250,000, simExchange: 216,000
PS3 - Wedbush: 225,000, simExchange: 228,000
PSP - Wedbush: 200,000, simExchange: 211,000

Pachter also predicts that software sales for that month will be topped by Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) and Wii Fit. This was an easy call to make, since Grand Theft Auto 4 took home two Guinness awards for its monumental sales, and Wii Fit debuted as the third largest video game launch ever when it was released.

Not only SimExchange, other sources as well show the PS3 above the 360. NPD is worhtless! Who cares what the VENDORS bought. Only sales at the register matter!!!!

How exactly are they supposed to accurately track sales at the register or online?

by Datnizzle - 2008-06-09 08:05
» You can track sales at the register by...

Getting numbers from the retailers. Anyone who works in retail can tell you stores keep a record of EVERYTHING that happens on a register. Online stores have a record of every item sold as well.

I get weekly POS reports from Wal-Mart and many other vendors. They not only track what product, they track WHAT BOX is in what warehouse, what store, if it's in the BACK of the store, or the FRONT of the store or if it's been sold.

Go read up on RFID and retail in general.

» hmm

probably because everybody went to the cheapest to keep collection of their GTA Series. That's how 360 outsold PS3

Not sure why people are surprised after it was reported that hardware sales in the UK had increased more for the 360 than the PS3 because of GTAIV. You would expect that trend to carry over to the US even more so. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a bigger sales gap between the 360

» oh noes

I got zero stars for saying anything about 360

oh boohoo all you want about your ps3.

» what a shock

well considering everyone who wants a ps3 doesnt want the only available model atm its not a surprise. the 40gb model is the one im referring to of course. we shall see how many ppl get stuck with mgs4 waiting for the bundle so they can buy gta4. real gta fans play it on pc anyway. =p
