Nintendo DS - Image 1The Nintendo DS has enjoyed significant success ever since it came out, however, sales have been slowly declining. Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian has given word that Nintendo may launch an updated version of the handheld if the drop continues.

Sebastian noted that Nintendo expects to ship 28 million units in F2009, two million less than those shipped in F2008. He said that the forecasted year-over-year decline in DS shipments in its fourth quarter is well in line with their expectations and that they "believe Nintendo could launch a refresh of its handheld platform if sales momentum does not continue."

An updated version of the DS actually seems like a good move on the part of Nintendo although it poses the question, "what more can the company do to improve the handheld?"

» What more could be done for improvement?...

The DS is a decent system at this point, but I can think of several things that can be done to improve it...

1. Add PDA functionality. With that touch screen, the DS would benefit from it and expand sales to people who do not happen to be looking for a system that just plays games.

2. Improve the WIFI compatibility. The PSP can connect to the internet with most WIFI routers while the DS is too severely limited in compatibility to make internet gaming practical.

3. Occasionally release firmware updates or downloadable content that contain new features (without all the crap that SONY pulled in the past in that area).

4. The DS can use a little bit more hardware. Perhaps Nintendo can make it as powerful as the Wii or at least the Gamecube.

5. Create a service that allows people to create and play homebrew games. As long as Nintendo keeps an eye on the service and has the right to prevent the use of homebrew that can be used for piracy it would work, and it is not like homebrew can replace the experience of playing commercially developed games to begin with.

as `powerful as the wii!?

the wii is a slightly toned down xbox 1 with more RAM and it is already as small as it gets and because of that it has heating issues! you got any idea how expensive would be to make it as small as a DS!?

besides it would be another whole system

your other Ideas are pretty cool. specially the PDA thing (but we already got DSorganize)

A PDA alike software by nintendo soudns to me kind of the DS browser: a good idea gone bad
