Analyst: new consoles for Nintendo and Microsoft rolled out by 2010 |
Ó
Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson took a look into the future by saying that Microsoft and Nintendo will be rolling out new consoles in two year's time. He expects the video game industry to peak around 2010 and the demand for new hardware will be needed by the end of both the Xbox 360's and the Wii's life cycles.Wilson explained his prediction by saying:
We believe that peak industry sales will occur in 2010, given that Microsoft will likely introduce its next console that year and Nintendo will likely launch before then.
He also predicted that 2010 will spell the time for new handheld hardware for both Nintendo and Sony as the life cycles for both the DS and the PlayStation Portable should be ending around that time.
In a related story found on GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's David Reeves expects that the PlayStation 3 will have a ten year cycle due to the built-in hard drive and the ability to upgrade the console firmware.

the WII (dont own one btw) surprises me. how it managed to flourish amongst the other powerhouses. probably bcz it was aimed for the mass public, but even they will adapt to the wii pretty soon, and demand more frm it, which it isnt capable of. the motion sensing appeal wont last very long.
the 360 too will b pushed to its limit early next year if not, mayb even this year. dat and along with the fact dat the PC's next gen hardware will b able to beat it in the blink of an eye makes me think how it will last for a decade.
the ps3 was probably singled out bcz its capable of so much more. developers r adapting to the Cell processor, once they r mature enough, they too can implement wii-like motion sensing in games, even better graphics and so much more. but i doubt if it will last 10 years. didnt sony say dat the ps3 can hav additional peripheral's in the future? if dat happens, then mayb it will last 10 years
PS: i dont own any of the consoles besides the DS and the PSP. so dont call me a fanboy

Also, for M$, yes, they could release a new console around 2010, like everyone would thing, this would make M$ loose so much money that they couldn't say they made profits in all those years, but it would totally destroy (or gift) the PS3. Destroy if the industry follow M$, and gift the ps3 if the industry don't wanna move this fast (they just paid for unreal engine, can't they do 2 games with it? lol). But I'd say that the industry would not go with M$... Maybe small fry devs who want some glory, but no big time studio. Studios invested a lot for this gen, they need to make more games per console.
Finally, I'd say this guy is really wierd. lol. I wonder if he can predict wich color will be his skin when he check in the mirror next time, lol.
Anyway, for M$ it's possible, without any good chances.

Or, as my friend would say, "the haves are getting better at it and so are the have-nots".

Handhelds DO last long. Look at the GB (10 years) and the GBA (8 years, still going now infact). It's got frig all to do with processor power - hasn't the DS beating the PSP proved that it isn't about power but good, quality games? This is true for consoles too.
And the PS3 will never be able to do "Wii like motion abilities" since it has no IR bar. There is no fixed point to get a triangulated spacial measurement. It's just gyroscopes on the PS3.
The Wii flourishes because it has mighty fine games on it. Just measure up the ratings of the super popular Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess. Isn't Galaxy 2nd only to Ocarina of Time as the best game ever?
Oh and it isn't "dat", it's "that".
Sorry I just look at things logically. I love my PSP and I prefer the PS3 over a 360 but I'm just realistic. I also don't see the PS3 overtaking 360 in sales.

So long as they're backwards compatible and KEEP backwards compatible I'll be happy. Oh and I won't be buying games if their prices keep going up. I'm happy with £30 Wii games but £50 PS3/360? Ouch.

This gen took so much investment in time and money as it was the first time that consoles have been multi-threaded......xbox "720" will be running the same technology, just with more memory and faster GPU/CPU clock speeds and more cores......so all of the game engines will be easly upgraded as the main hurdle of learning to program for multiple core systems will be over. Having a game engine run on 3 X 3.2 ghz cores and enabling it to use 6 X 6.2 ghz cores is not a huge deal....

the wii might get a hdd upgrade, and it has sd cards, the wii isnt a media hub so u dont need mass storage, and again its firmware upgradeable,
why are sony trying to make out that there console is the only one able to do this

And seriously....if this weren't true then the Wii wouldn't be 1st, and you were the one who said it was just a glorified PS2 right?

PS3 is on a steady rise.
360 has made a major breakthrough with regards to sales and aggresive marketing and games that players want.
Nintendo has surprised everyone and now has an excess cash to move forward.
My analysis is that the PS3 will continue a little longer than 360 and Nintendo as it has many components that are easily changed via revisions and its cpu architecture is far from exhausted and developers are going to get more out of it.
The 360 has started to gain ground but will need to develop faster as by 2010 the PS3 capabilities and the developers will have games that in all probability are graphically capable of more than the present 360.
Nintendo on its new wave of success may well move in on an area where many fanboys of PS3 and 360 are saying its not really a real graphical competitor. Some even state its not a games console?
Well thats a matter of discussion but the markets do not lie and the nintendo is selling faster than dunking doughnuts. So I cannot believe that management at Nintendo would be so stupid as to let this new wave of base users stagnate by rehashing. Like it or not I for one expect nintendo to go all out with its new found wealth and go grab an ever bigger piece of the pie.
Regardless of everything all i can say is what a great time to be playing games. All consoles regardless of choice are getting bigger badder better.
