Analyst: DS to surpass PS2 sales by the end of the year

Sony's PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console to date. By the end of the year, however, that title could be handed over to the Nintendo DS.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier says that the DS's install base in the US should overtake the PS2's "by October or November." Pretty impressive, considering the DS has only been out for five years while the PS2's been around for 10 years now.

The PS2 has so far sold more than 143 million units worldwide. By Nintendo's own accounts, the DS has sold over 125 million units since launch.

The PS2 was a Home Console, not a Portable Console. I think their should be a crown for both. I mean I have 3 DSi's 3 iPhones and 1 iPod Touch, 3 PSP's and only 2 PS3's and an XBOX 360. I have 4 brothers, so we all have our own Portable Console, but we have to share the Home Consoles, as they are more expensive and when we go on long trips they cannot accompany us. So to say the DS is the OVERALL BEST CONSOLE I think would be wrong, there should be two catagories.. Do you agree?

good to know. its funny that it took 4 iliterations of the ds to overtake the ps2's 14 revisions

I agree, you can't compare home consoles with portable consoles. Still, though, I prefer the PSP. Better sales don't necessarily mean better console. The majority of people in my country like reggaeton music, does that make it a superior music style? I don't think so.
I'm not trolling the DS, I think it's a great console, but not because of its sales: what could be said about the iPad then?

If the majority of people in your country like reggaeton music then YES, it is superior in your country.

What can be said about the iPad? You can say it's brand new. You can say it's in a market of it's own. You can say lots of things. You can say right now it's too friggen expensive for the mass market.

Well, I don't doubt that the NDS will surpassed the PS2. They have been releasing updated hardware since release. Hopefully, I am very glad to see Nintendo taking that title with the DS since Nintendo has been a games company from the beginning.
