Star Fox CrewStar Fox Command has already launched in Japan and in August 28, it would grace U.S. store shelves. We mentioned earlier that the game got a very decent rating of 32/40 from the Japanese Famitsu, and now another review has been done by GameBrink. What score did they give? In their review, Star Fox Command got a grade of 82/100. The grading system says that the 80-89 grade range "represents wonderful games that have a few nagging details that set them back from greatness. You'll most likely enjoy them if the bad parts are bearable".

According to the review, the game stuck closely to the original Star Fox game on the SNES:

Players are allowed to make decisions during the story allowing them to play through different routes and levels. They only have one choice during their first play through single player mode as the other two are locked. Once the game has been finished once, you obtain a key that allows you to unlock the other choices giving the single player mode some replayability with over nine different endings to unlock and view again in the gallery section.

The review also tackled about the Star Fox Crew's enemies. They said that the enemies offer a fair amount of challenge as they will "nearly always try to attack you from behind, forcing you to make good use of your piloting skills". What makes it harder are the moving and stationary predators scattered around the battlefield, forcing you to dodge or make use of your barrel rolls. But when the review talked about the bosses, the reviewer said that the bosses are big but they seem to be easy to defeat -- "A bomb or two and a couple of laser shots finish them in no time."

The pros of the game are good 3D visuals, plenty of enemy variety and different environments; fast paced shooting action, timer keeps you killing fast; non-linear story with different routes, levels and endings; stages can be selectively replayed to beat score records; and stylus only control system works well for accuracy and speed. The pros outnumbered the cons which include single player not taking long to finish if you don't decide to replay the different routes; and enemies can be very easy to beat including the bosses.

» The game is getting better the deeper you get into it

I must say, I would have prefered a rail shooter over a free fly game (except for multiplayer) but I am liking it more and more now. With rail shooters like the original star fox for snes, the orchestrated path is well planned out, you dont have to go seeking things out as the enemies come right at you, and music on rail shooters match the action. With that said, Star Fox ds is very well put together. It involves an in depth story line with a lot of conversation (you can skip the text if you want) a tacticle map screen to plot your movements, and dog fights. With choosing the path of your ships on the tacticle map screen, you use your stylus to draw a path, any enemy ship, base, or power up (such as added time power ups, replenish sheilds, or picking up bombs. You have both a limited number of moves and turns for each battle - if you dont choose your path wisely to encounter all of the enemies, they will smack into your home base ship and you will die and the mission falis. So choosing the correct path is vital. If you run out of turns and didnt kill all the enemies, your dead too.

You get to use different ships in dog fights and each has different characteristics . Some have lock on ability, others dont. Some have better sheilds, some have better weapons.

I finally completed the 3rd mission and here is where I really started to enjoy the game. Fighting the CRAB BOSS was a joy and very much like the original Star Fox - a huge boss your have to chip away at - the eyes, the claws, then the main body.

Wifi battles are tough and I have yet to win one - those players on the net are good so I suggest honing your skills in the single player mode or hooking up with a buddy at your same level of play.

The controls will take a bit to get used to but I have found that using a flexible thumb stylus ( I picked mine up on ebay but you can get it at liksang too) makes playing a lot eaiser. All of your movements are through the touch screen and having to hold a stylus the whole game will cramp you up. I cant wait till someone like Pelican comes out with grips for the ds lite because the ds is made for small hands. I just ordered the play stand from china and am waiting for it to arrive - I think it will help out with my game play and with that and the flex stylus, perhaps Ill win a battle on the net !
