Actually, the Emmy goes to... Dual Shock

The word for this is Hydrapinion's Seamus Byrne decided to follow up the claim of Sony's SIXAXIS controller bagging an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Science (NATAS), and he's apparently found a rather large discrepancy.

The winner of the Emmy for Technology and Engineering isn't the SIXAXIS. It isn't even the Wiimote-Nunchuk combination.

It's the DUALSHOCK (or Dual Shock, if you prefer).

At first, Byrne was somewhat annoyed with the original announcement because the SIXAXIS didn't really have an original design, since it's an adaptation of Dual Shock controller and all, minus Immersion's rumble technology. Imagine his, and our, surprise when Christine Chin from NATAS sent a follow-up message. She writes,

I understand you had contacted Cheryl Daly, Director of Communications at NATAS to confirm if Sony won for their PS3 controller. This is incorrect, Sony won for their dual shock analog controller. The award is from the Video Game Technology Group. It was nominated by our internal group and considered along with the Nintendo D-Pad both of which were considered Emmy worthy for the development of the generation of controllers that followed the classic joysticks.

I would like to confirm that Sony did not win for their PS3 controller, they won for their Dual Shock Analog controller.

All we can say is, this really isn't the best way to start the year. Still, props to Sony for the Dual Shock win.

I can't believe what a laughing stock the emmys have become.... sad world

» Still

Just shows how good Sonys controller is.

I would choose a dual shock over any existing controller any day for any game.

I wonder what the wii fanboys are gonna say now, they kept b i t c h i n that the award should go to the wiimote instead of the SIXAXIS.

They kept b i t c h i n that sony STOLE motion sensing from nintendo even though we all know its not true cause its humanly impossible to simply add a feature such as motion sensing to a controller 3 weeks before its launch. You need months and months of work to perfect it.

The Wiimote was actually announced at E3 2005.

» GO PS3! Uh I mean the last console that's not a failure

What's up with giving an award to a 10 year old controller design with stolen rumble technology? That's more innovative than the new controller? hahaha!

Actually, the Wiimote was announced during TGS 2005. Nintendo only showed the actual Wii console during E3. They didn't even show any games.

yeah and the SIXAXIS (boomerang at the time)was announced at E32005 with hints of tilt functions, it wasnt till the nintendo conference in 2006 that Nintendo came out with their official wiimote announcement.

Tilt is just an evolution of the industry, if you look around you can find patents for tilt and wii functions on the ps2 dating back at least 2 years. And theirs always Nintendo's failure of a power glove.

Thanks for the correction Dragon Slayer.

I love the SIXAXIS wiki, here's a quote about this award:

"Alleged Awards

Sony reported that the SIXAXIS controller had been given an Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences [14]. There was much confusion over the choice of SIXAXIS for this award, though, since all its features have been either preceded or matched by competing console's controllers, such as the Wii Remote which features a higher degree of motion sensitivity, or the Xbox 360 controller which made the first full use of wireless connectivity [15]. This has since disproven as it was in fact Sony's DualShock controller that won the Emmy and not the SIXAXIS [16]. It remains unclear if Sony's misleading press release was an error, or a marketing ploy for the Playstation 3."

I'd say marketing ploy.

» Jealous n00bs

everybody who hates ps3, just has never played it et, and that is a fact!!!!!!

My friend was a PS3 hater like you n00bs, and as soon as he played my 60GB, 600$, PS3, he changed his mind right away and is dying to buy one. The price is very reasonable too. This machine i my opinion is worth more than about 1000 bucks. This pwns 360 and Wii any day. i own all three next gens, so i know!

BTW, people who reply negative to this message is an even bigger jealous n00b than they were before this message was sent!

» Jealous of something that shows nothing ?

I'm confused when you say the PS3 "PWNS" Why cannot Sony or you PROVE IT what proof do you have as it certainly isn't in any present PS3 released games? remembering Resistance was at the 2005 E3 show along with Gears of war so it can't be a development time excuse can it?and would you like to point out what exactly your friend was playing on the PS3 to get such a high opinion over all the other consoles?.

» My friend this...my firend that...oh sure

It's always a "friend" isn't it.

"My friend said he hated consoleX, but when I showed him my consoleX, he went out and bought one that same day!"

"My friend bought consoleY and it died after just a few hours, lol".

"My friend works in a games shop and he says customers keep returning consoleY but no-one returns consoleX"

"My friend has consoleY, but when he saw my consoleX, he sold consoleY and bought consoleX instead"

And so on. Blah blah blah........

by Mr. Common Sense - 2007-01-10 08:00
» I've played PS3 too, not bad but definately not better than the 360

I think I've heard all the stories that start with "my friend's" blah blah

» nextgen

i've played the PS3 and was bored with it. So that is not a fact.

» PS3....

PS3 is worth $1299 in NZ cos' sony stated the release in March 2007 was gonna b that much but i can get a wii for $499+Xbox360for$600 which leaves $100 of the worth of PS3

and they have dam good games but Sony not so much WII60 4 life

by TuShiOh - 2007-01-11 04:06
» oK..ThEn...

Fine, maybe its just everyone else that has their own opinion out there....or maybe on this everybody is just a big 360 fanboy, but...ok then!...i would also like to say that the games we were playing to change my friend, TYLER'S, mind about the PS3 were: Resistance, NBA 07 in 1080p, and Fight Night Round 3! 360 is an alright system, but dont u n00bs remember what 360 looked like when it first arrived here. It looked like a ps2 game, just allitle bit better. NOW, it did get better, but its still not as good as PS3. And PS3 is gonna get even better as the months go on...but until then, u n00bs r just gonna keep getting jealous because u have never played one, or are just mad about the fact that u want one so bad but cant afford it, that ur just gonna keep defending ur 360 that is definitely not worth 400 dollars. Even Wii is worth more than that.

PS3 PS3 PS3!!!!!
