I'm sure this question's been eating at you ever since you heard of the mode in Call of Duty: World at War (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS): "Why Nazi Zombies?"

Activision executive producer Daniel Suarez explained during an interview with MTV multiplayer:

It was one of the pet projects of one of the designers. The seed of the idea came out of casual [tower] defense games online. It was something that they [Treyarch] had been working on for a while and went back to when they had time.

Suarez went on to explain that the Nazi Zombies became something of an urban legend in the company during World at War's production, with the designers themselves claiming no knowledge of any zombies, nazis or otherwise.

Quite suddenly, the Nazi Zombie build appeared one day and evidently became quite popular with the World at War team internally. The marketing people got involved and a little public attention was called to the mode for Halloween via a video on GameTrailers. The rest is history.

Point of curiosity: The devs were able to get through 23 waves in Nazi zombie mode.

When you discover it in the game without knowing of it's existence, you'll be laughing and possibly surprised..but when half the people on your list ask you endlessly to play Zombies with them, when there's just one map available and no actual goal besides surviving, you sometimes wonder exactly why it's this popular.

Zombie games are fun, and I think it's because we all like gore/dismemberment and mindless melee attacking enemies when we have big weapons to blow them away with, how is that not fun ^_^ though it only remains fun for so long, then we look out for another zombie game with maybe a story to make it more interesting :P

# Do they really need to explain themselves?FOURTHxSURVIVOR 2008-12-04 12:35
Its Nazis and Zombie, the two things gamers love to kill the most, does it need an explanation? The only explanation I want from them is if these Nazi Zombies are also aliens (the third thing gamers love to kill the most); because if you have Alien Nazi Zombies than you've covered all your bases.
