Activision CEO: Take-Two doesn't meet our criteria for acquisition

Electronic Arts stood up to offer Take-Two Interactive a Bobby Kotick - Image 1

After the gigantic video game publisher huge sum of money for acquisition, many industry watchers and commoners wonder why Activision hasn't displayed the same interest in Take-Two as much as EA has. For Activision chairman and CEO Bobby Kotick, the company behind the successful Grand Theft Auto franchise simply does not meet Activision's criteria.

For a company to be an attractive acquisition, Kotick stated that "we need a history of profitability, good management, the proprietary technology for a franchise, history of multimillion unit sellers." He added, "they would have to be non-dilutive and operating margin accretive."

Take-Two, according to Activision's head honcho, failed to meet the requirements. Kotick said, "...for us, Take-Two didnÂ’t fulfill those requirements. Maybe it does over the long-term for EA, but it doesn't for us."

Electronic Arts, which line of sports games has seen competition from Take-Two's 2K Sports camp, apparently has a reason strong enough to take over the company on a 60% premium. Kotick noted that EA has some unique insight in the business of expansion. "I'm sure they have a good sense of what its prospects are for the future," he concluded.

After Activision sent shockwaves around the globe by merging with Vivendi Games, we all have a fairly good idea what superstars the big player wants. Before that deal, EA's purchase of BioWare and Pandemic Studios was the biggest talk of town. Meanwhile, it is believed that Rockstar North may part ways with Take-Two when its contract ends in February 2009, so we could see another hefty buy-out in the near future.

Now what I don't see is why people bash EA instead of Activsion...I mean they ruined Tony Hawk games by forcing them out every year, they made GH not as fun with GH3, they almost killed COD when they went with Treyarch instead of Infinity Ward(and still might now that Treyarch is doing COD5)

EA been releasing crap games since the dawn of time that's why their rep is so bad.Madden is a good example they ruined the franchise.EA just recently been coming out with quality titles.Activision may release CoD games every year, but they have to teams making them every 2 years EA doesn't do that. Also, I actually prefer GH3 over the previous ones.

Theres all this talk about how GTA might not continue if Take-Two is bought out, but isn't GTA Rockstars game and not Take-Twos? Surley if Rockstar and Take-Two part ways and EA does buy out Take-Two, Rockstar would want to keep the GTA franchise for themselves?

I could totally have got this all wrong, maybe Take-Two now have full rights on GTA and I wasn't aware of this :S

You're right. GTA is owned by Rockstar. Even if they split, GTA will still be made by Rockstar.

Oh really? So Skate or Die, the first few Need for Speeds (I'll admit, they aren't too amazing now) The Sims franchise (and all simgames, such as SimCity), Battlefield franchise, SSX franchise, C+C franchise, Tiger Woods franchise, and NHL ones all suck?

Please get over yourself and quit making excuses to hate on a company just cause they're rich. You can't have a double standard, look at what Activision did to GH, they loaded it full of really obvious advertising, made it easier, and made the songs more well known stuff to appeal for casuals. I'm not saying GH3 sucks, I'm saying I preferred 2 over 3. And yesa, I know EA does all this as well but all I'm saying is why have a double standard?

Madden this year blew APF out of the water, so that's kinda a bad example. 2K had 3 years to make a game that would beat Madden, and yet they couldn't make new animations or include a season/franchise mode?
