A response for GameStop employee complaint |
Ó
A few days ago, a GameStop clerk posted his "memoirs", working at GameStop. The blog shared this GameStop employee's complaints about being overworked, over-abused and underpaid, especially by clients who tend to be ignorant of the services and products offered by the said company. In response to the said blog, another writer wrote an open letter, outlining his concerns about working in the retail industry. This counter-response from Ruskin offered a challenge to retail clerks to have a better look at their jobs. Ruskin writes,
First, I challenge anyone who has worked in retail to say with a straight face that they loved their job, that they never had to answer a single stupid question from a customer, and that they never received harsh criticism and verbal abuse from perfect strangers.
Ruskin points out that having to deal with such "disagreeable" clients is part of the retail job. He ends with the statement, "Simply put, all retail sucks. Welcome to the real world."
This exchange of ideas may serve to have us take a better look at ourselves, as buyers in the gaming retail industry. These GameStop employees deserve to be treated with more respect; after all, we get our gaming goodies, care of them.

All employees deserve to be treated with respect. However, some gamestop employees are irritating when they do everything that they can to convince me to buy a 360 over any other system. If I want your opinion I'll ask for it.
The reason they do that is because Management breaths down their neck trying to get them to promote low selling items. Welcome to America. You can't go into any store without some two-faced son of a ***** trying to sell you something you don't want. And if he thinks thats hard, try working for the Hospitality Industry (tourism, hotels, restaurants, airlines, country clubs). There you will see how ugly and rude people really are. 7/10 customers, especially certain "people" complain about everything. And then they yell at you and cuss you out like its your fault for their problem. That's why when I see those people on the street, I screw them over. ahahahhaahahahh a
Retail is probably one of the worse jobs to work in.
You have to be able to deal with people who are in a bad mood or else you shouldnt be in retail at all.
Also management wants sales numbers, they could care less about anything else. So thats why as a consumer, you walk into a store, the employees will try and force you to buy what they need to sell.
Its a crappy job but people who can handle the stress and do it well get paid alot. Work in a video game store and get a good recommendation and you might end up working retail in a better business and make more money.
Why not get a real job. Why should anyone pay these *****gots that work at this garbage store anything more than minimum wage. They shouldn't even get paid at all.
***** you all that work at this *****ed up piece of ***** excuse for a store.
I'm sensing a little anger there.
simple really, dont work in retail. I did for 6 years, then changed career completely and im loving it.....why anyone would think working in retail is great and would give them loads of money is beyond me. Unless you move into high management, its extremely poor
... like when you say "which system should I get?"
i worked at office max for a year and a half, now working at best buy. retail sucks. it always will. and people are *****ing retarded
and retail will always suck. honestly i tell everyone if you can get a job outside of retail, *****ing take it. because being in retail will make you go crazy. Though i like best buy, not as bad as most places.
The fact that anyone says that retail sucks just show that they couldn't handle it. Period. It is not for everyone. Having been a retail manager for 10 years(2 years with EB Games), I was successful because I learned not to take stuff personally(ie unrespectful customers)
The fact of the matter is.... TOO many retail employees believe themselves to be superior to customers because "they ask stupid questions", etc. Well, they are just WRONG. I'm sure these retail people ask the same "stupid" questions in other environments.
As for people who say things like get a real job, and other derogatory things about GameStop employees, You are just as wrong. It is a real job. What isn't real is your ability to get over yourself(Trevor ).
If you don't like retail, fine. Get out of it. It is not for everyone. Don't go to work everyday and take it out on your customers.
If you don't like an employee at Gamestop, fine. Leave. Complain to their supervisor(ever yone has one). Go to another store(they're eveywhere).
Or just do what you do here by flaming, people and things on the internet because you aren't grown up enough to do anything else.
Lighten up people, we're talking about games here, not world events........sheez.
amen to that
I think the company is too driven by sales over just taking care of customers. I hate working for Gamestop. Its one of the *****tiest jobs I've ever had.
The guys who work my Local Gamestop in Carbondale Illinois are a bunch of *****s. I really hate going there. I DONT WANT TO RESERVE HALO3!!!!! I have no sympathy for these peddelers.
If you work at gamespot your a punk. I cant wait to run into one of these little *****tards. F gamestop.
Gamestop seriously hires the rudest people I've ever met. There are three Gamestops in my area and each of them employ people that are ignorant, rude and uber nerdy. On several occasions the employees would straight out lie to my face about certain game coming out and they never want to help anyone who comes into the store. Seriously 'F' Gamestop and their employees. I will never buy from them again, especially when target is right next store and carries everything they do.
I work in retail and I don't really mind anyone's questions stupid or not. But there are customers out there or people who want to take advantedge of everything you say or try to pull off anything they could.
For example, I get asked about how much something like a A/B USB cable is and I go "Well, don't quote me on it, but I think its $24" So, they go and get it and they tell me, "Its $32, I thought you said it was $24? I want it for $24, why does it cost so much?" and I tell them "I said not to quote me in other words I was just telling you somewhat an idea of how much it could cost"
Another time, A guy comes in with his computer and couldn't get his cingular laptop card to work on his new laptop, so he comes in and basically says he has the performance service plan and he wants me to make it work. I tell him that the service plan doesn't cover software issues. Installing hardware costs extra. Then he goes on some tangent that WE told him that it was easy to install, and its easy as poping a CD in the tray and installing it. I told him, "sir, WE didn't tell you anything. A cingular rep told you that at a tent outside of the store, we can install it for you for $39 and it will work", and he goes off and blah blah blah then says "What difference does it make if you install it or I install it?" I was dumbfounded..."sir, you installed it, and does it work?" No he says, and I tell him "Well, if we installed it, it would work" and then he goes off again "I spent $2000 on this laptop from you guys and it doesn't do what I want, blah blah blah" and I go "sir, I understand, and I could this thing working probably right here and right now in a matter of minutes, but my dept needs to get paid and on top of that I can't legally do any work on your computer until you pay $39 and sign 2 papers for me, and then sign another paper when I give it back to you, and theres nothing that I can do to change that" and then he goes on some other tangent then goes "I'm going to return the laptop"...ok...thats fine, good day sir!
Then theres the famous middle eastern fellow that wants discounts and free stuff when he spends money there. Doesn't work like that sir.
Then theres the famous asian person that wants you to treat them like a king and bend over backwards to get them something. "Sir, we don't have anymore $400 laptops for sale. No, you cannot buy the floor model" "Maam, I understand you want $30 flashdrives in the ad, but there aren't here and I can't go into the backstock area and get them for you because I'm the only person in my dept on duty right now, I'm sorry"
Theres a difference between customers being rude, and ***** customers.
I worked at gamestop but i got fired because i kept peeing in the faces of underage girls that walked in....and if their mom was cute i gave them a spray too....they asked me why i did it but i just told them thats how i roll *****z. I mean when i worked at target i got to pee on people all the time and they never said a thing.....
why the hell do we care about employees complaining?!?!..i want ps3 updates not gamestop updates..
Get a therapist
He says Don't take it out on YOUR customers. They aren't my customers! They don't pay me anything!
Any manager will tell you. You don't get paid enough to get yelled at. You got an angry or pissed off customer then call me and have them yell at me cause thats in my job description
When I went to pick up my pre-orded Prey Limited Edition, there was a girl in her early 20s behind the counter. When I asked for the pewter figure pre-order reward, she rolled her eyes at me and got an attitude.
Oh, sorry for making you open a cabinet and slap a figure on the counter next to my game box. Didn't mean to ruin your day...
At a different Gamestop, one employee rang up my purchase, gave me the total, then cleared my order since I went back to look at other games (didn't get anything else though).
When I got back to the counter, a different employee rung up my exact same order, except that the total was now $5 higher. After asking him literally 4 or 5 times, he sullenly confessed that he was adding a "Disc warrenty" to protect my game for 1 year. I told him "That game would be old news 6 months from now. Take the $5 charge off and put everything in a bag so I can leave..."
you had a customer that wanted something printed in an add and had it in stock, but not on the floor??? and you couldnt spend 2 minutes going back to get it for her, you have got to be kidding me. Not keeping merchandise in an add on floor, scheduling sufficient employees, sounds like a top notch place to me. And you as an employee, if someone ask you for something, are'nt you supposed to help them find it and get a price quote. Why didnt you go get if yourself and show them the price. Is that not in your job description. What do you get paid for, just to handle money and open the register, you gotta be kidding me. I have never shopped at a gamestop and based on this persons own testimony of how he treats customers and other customers input, I will never spend a dime in a gamestop store.
Anyone complaining about working at a game store must have been pamper as a kid. I go in there all the time and they do nothing. Just stand there. When they actually have to check someone out they act like its such a hassle. And its not that theyre answering stupid questions, its theyre giving stupid answers. 9/10 Gamestop/EB employees no jack-**** about games.
You think its hard dealing with kids who want their Halo 2? Try dealing with an old lady who just has to have a certain type of bread, and wont take "We dont have any right now" for an answer. Its like they think your lieing to them. All the while your trying to run the register and *gasp* bagging also (how many things do Gamestop employees have to ring up? Like 1 game per customer?) And while on the microphone asking the meat department to give you a price for someone on the phone.
But your also a stocker so youve got the hurry up and catch the other cashiers up so you can go back to the pallete you were working on.
Working as a stocker+cashier at a grocery store is much harder than a game clerk. If your a clerk and are complaining your a wuss and should wake up. Youve got one of the best jobs on the planet. Period. End of story.
Working with the Public no matter what job your in sucks. You meet different people every day who talk to you any way they want and your just suppose to stand there and smile. I'm a mid manger at Mc Donald s and it's hell. I get customer's who are Ignorant all day. They tell us to smile and we do but after a few months of taking customers bull***** you get a little annoyed. I not say all our employes are outstanding cause I'd had to fire many. But I feel what their saying. Me I don't plan to work in this biz for long. and who ever said it's the Upper management thats really gets paid their right. Management does not really care for the employees they just care about sells and how to bring more money to the company. Now when ever I go to a store no matter what the company I give the works respect. I more people did that then maybe work would not be the way it is now
You must shop at a crappy Gamestop. Here we don't try to sell you a system you obviously don't want. We try to sell you a system you do want. If you prefer the PS3 over the 360 then I'm not going to try and sell you a 360 no matter how much *I* might prefer it. I'm not the one buying it.
Simple solution: Shop at a different store. The employees at your Gamestop suck.
Retail tells employee to bug the dog***** out of the consumer (Best Buy, especially). They act like consumers don't have common sense.
"tourism, hotels, restaurants, airlines, country clubs" all pay better than gamestop.
Good God you pwn R. Kelly! I wish I rolled like you!
im a gamestop manager and i know alot of managers that see their customers a stat's Im glad to say that i dont. But when a cutsomer is a jerk they know they are in my store. MOst of the time im happy to see you walk out the door with something you like as apposed to something i was told to sell you ( I hate EA, madden). And as far as my employees, they all have like working for me and actually leave after i go to another store. but there are other managers that are asses. just give someone a chance and if you dont like them or dont listen to thier situation and dont try to understand se la vi
Its obvious that you don't understand. They are YOUR customers if you work there. No customers+No JOB! Yes, no one gets paid to get yelled at that's understood, but if it happens alot then maybe you're the incapable employee that everyone else in this forum is referring to, and you just don't deserve your job.
And so what if someones yells at you. Are you so weak that you can't take that from a complete stranger? Does it hurt your feelings?
Life is hard, get used it!
If you can't handle someone yelling...I don't know...DO SOMETHING ELSE!
There are plenty of jobs in this world where you don't interact with people. Why don't you get one. It seems you have problems in this area.
JUST BECAUSE YOU KNOW ABOUT GAMES DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD WORK AT GAMESTOP!
You have to be a real person, who can handle real life.
Stop being a little girl.....
"customer", I think with that last paragraph he meant the customers wanted things that were out of stock. Although I have been to many Best Buy sales and the item in the goddamned ad was "out of stock" even though I got there 10 minutes after they opened.
Also, it's pretty obvious "asdf" was not talking about working in a Gamestop, Gamestop doesn't sell $2000 laptops.
Could the above two comments please be resubmitted in the fu*king English language? God damn, how are you people old enough to have jobs? I could write better than that when I was six.
The idea is to create an atmosphere where customers will WANT to come and ASK your opinion and NOT be worried that they'll be HARASSED with illusions of grandeur. Let's face it. All three systems basically suck ass.
"I'm lovin' it???" Sounds like your working for McDonald's BUDDY!!!!!!!!! AHHHAAHHAHAHAAH YOU NEGRO!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
To respond in order, no
no, there was 8 in stock according to the RSS (a box) and it was obviously in the wherehouse cause I LOOKED FOR THEM.
Leaving your section of the store for 2 minutes is more then enough time for someone to steal anything in the dept. This store is in Oakland, CA. This store is not in the middle of nowhere missouri where everyone knows each other, idiot. If I left the dept so some lady can save $10 on a flashdrive and something gets stolen, I get fired, dumb@ss.
I don't need to get fired for being too incompetant to prevent theft. I also have the right to refuse service to anyone.
Crap! I just came back from a GameStop interview...
