The trailer is nice and all, but it's also mostly one-sided. We can understand the need for the trailer to be somewhat controversial in its presentation, for the sake of picking up a distributor for it, but this may just make some defensive gamers rather angry. Still, it's just a trailer, so there's a good chance that the viewpoints will be more balanced once the whole film is actually shown.
Some sensitive ears will also notice some voice-overs from some familiar people, such as Microsoft's Bill Gates, Jack Thompson, and Entertainment Consumers Association president Hal Halpin. Yes folks, Spencer and Hal are brothers, just so you know.
If there's one thing the trailer got right though, it's placing the words "Freedom of Choice" and "Social Responsibility" inside. Those are definitely two catchphrases that represent just what needs to be balanced in today's videogaming landscape.

now i may sound like im stupid but, its so damn true, kids who have nothing in their life to do, or live depressed lives or anything where they cant control themselfes do learn and do apply sometimes what they do in video games. Im 21 and i lived in a town in the middle of nowhere when i was 16, and i didnt have a lot of friends and everyone hated me cuz i was different or not popular and i played GTA all the time. And eventually with a friend we almost pulled a real life GTA thanks to me playing that game all the time. Its true, the only way to stop this is to go very strict and prevent games from reaching stupid immature teenagers, because as we grow older we become more aware of wtf is goin on.

Um...anyways...that was your dumb decision, but no one is perfect.
First off...why did they show a snippet of Riven in there...that was in no way a violent game. Unless you couldnt figure out one of the puzzles and got postal on your little sister, but anyways.
Secondly, Jack Thompson is ugly.
And lastly, parents need to stop buying their kids violent video games. PERIOD. END OF DISCUSSION. I applauded my homies at Gamestop for refusing to sell a mature rated game to a minor, then later that kids parental unit refused to purchase it for him. Parents who let their kids play Saint's Row need to get slapped. Also, parents need to step up and nail into their kids' heads the fact that violence is UNACCEPTABLE.
They say the reasons they want to get rid of games is because they dont want a 9 year old child playing a first person shooter. that is exactly what the ratings for games are for. if a 9 year old kid gets a first person shooter its either because its not bad, or because a parent or someone doesnt mind. And if a 9 year old is like omg this is baller im pwning some n00bs in this game, im gonna go to a store and buy a sniper rifle because im only 9 years old and kill some cops, well, that just doesnt seem very likely to happen. And im not sure if I got the one part right but he was like were getting closer to banning these games or something? Thats just stupid and will never happen. There are all the game studios they would have to ban all violent games from making and then even if they did (which wont happen) there are games people make at home and put online which could possibly turn out to be one of the most violent games ever made. These guys are just wasting their time.

wat was wrong with that game? if i remember, it used huge brain power and it had cannibalism. it was like strategie with an alien twist to it. I loved that game. those politicians need to ***** off and leave it to esrb and relize, no one frickin made a big deal when GTA or Mortal Kombat first came out. I have a friend who had never even seen a gun, if only at a videogame. We went to a shooting range and guess who was the best shot? Yep, that guy.
Now, what I'm trying to say is that children do learn stuff from videogames. Heck, we learn stuff from anything that we spent more than 4 hours doing. Videogames have the potential to be dangerous.
But then again, so are cars. Cars kill more people then videogames. What do we do to fight that problem? We issue driver licenses and we increase the drinking age to 21. I am only asking that the same measure be taken for videogames. If they are rated M for Mature, then only 18 year olds and up should play that game.
We can argue all day long wether a kid is going to play a rated M game or not, but listen to this- So what? I drank my first drop of alcohol when I was 12 and I am not a drunk. I drink maybe once a month. I have no reason to lie. My dad taught me to drive at 14. I have never crashed or killed myself. Do not take the blame off the parents.

I'll admit, the trailer has my curiosity piqued, and I rather find myself wanting to see what the full documentary has to say. I will say this, however: I will sorely disappointed if the whole thing takes the same negative tone that the trailer had. It barely put a defense up for games, and seemed, rather, to bash them. Though if they manage to get video game haters to see it with the expectations of having video games proven violent, and then it shows the positive side of gaming, I will be very happy.
People live vicariously through books on a daily basis. We've simply chosen a new medium. To shelter a person may be just as farmful as over exposure. Some may view games as curing fear of the unknown. Need For Speed put it very well, "Cars that react like they should so you can drive them like you shouldn't." I believe thats an apt ideal. My countless hours in these vivid make-believe worlds have never clouded my ability to distinguish right from wrong. Books, tv, movies, or games... I don't think any of these things procure violence more than the last. If anything they encourage free thinking and innovation. Some even call it stress relief.
In England we don't even take video games so serious.
I Don't have a clue what Americans think video games are. I Usually see kids with BB Guns more than i see kids playing a video game.

we have a rating system for a reason. no one sews the movie companies anymore over how violent their stuff is because they're rated R and no one can get in over 17. And just like video games, Mature games are rated M so no one can buy them under 17.

If a video game got you to kill someone it's either;
A) You were so bad at it that you wanted to kill the guy playing against you
B) You had your entire Video Game collection stollen and you kill the thief
C) You wanted to recreate the game.
Which of these choice seems the more probable to happen? Certainly not the case in C, yet it's what they want us to believe. Actually it could be the case for all these muders but we'd have to edit that choice in order to make it right;
C) You are so damn messed up in the head that you did kill someone because you wanted to recreate the game.
Since we should ban video games because they make us do bad things, we should ban action firgures because young kids recreate fights with them, we should also ban pens because you know they can draw horrible things, hey I know we should ban ourselves for making war, killing people... I completely agree with not allowing chlidren to play violent video games. I saw my brother playing dead rising on his 360 and the whole point of the game pretty much is to brutally "destroy" the zombies in anyway u see fit. This is the type of game that does stuff like that to people.
On thing though is, why ban violent video games first. If i were them i would first go and try to ban things like guns and say even bullets (i saw one comedian talk about making all bullets 5000$ and that actually makes sense), then we should try to educate some of the parents who couldn't give a bull about what their children do. teach them how to parent better.
It does sound sketchy but hey, if they can ban video games which seems next to impossible then why can't they do this?

Actually, the first Mortal Kombat actually created the ESRB due to controversy in the fatality moves. As for GTA, all the publicity was created by Rockstar for more public interest (read it on Wikipedia, it's true).

5. the bit about the plane is bull *****. the simulator they talked about must have been a highly expensive machine that is a replica of the plane controls. now im no rocket scientist but i dont think everyone can buy them and have enough room in there house to store it.. let alone have a 10 year old kid buy one and then somehow get a fully built plane and fly it into some random build.

I believe we should have the freedom to play whatever we want to play instead of un-informed politions trying to change what we enjoy. If I want to shoot a person in a videogame I will, but I will certianly not shoot a person in real life.
In the issue of kids going to schools and shooting people and syaing videogames caused it, there had to of been a major pychological breakdown and it's rather dissapointing that the parents were unable to detect it and give them the help they so desperatly needed.
My stance is that game designers should be able to realease what ever they want as long as it has the esrb rating. Children should not be playing games like GTA unless their parents are there to supervise and informthem that what they are seeing is wrong.
Another thing that greatler irks me is what I read on the firum post. Beleive it or not people, that is not really helping our situation and is validating their point.
I am a 16 yearold canadian who plays videogames. I do have temtaions to kill, rape, or rob people. I am level headed and that is why my parents will go with me to buy GTA. I am going to end by saying that parents need to be more responsible and watch what their kids are doing and regulary comunicate with them because that is your job.
