64% of Online Gamers are Female |
Listed in: MMORPG, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS Tags: Nielsen Entertainment, North America
Ó
According to a new study released earlier this week by Nielsen Entertainment in their third annual Active Gamer Benchmark Study, women make up 64% of North America's 117 million online gamers - and we aren't lying. The study did not reveal any particular genre or game type that were being played by women, but it is expected that online browser games such as Zuma on various flash websites made up a large proportion of the female online gamers. Although many traditional online games such as Halo or CounterStrike were primarily aimed towards males, the rise of RPGs and large-scale online titles such as World of Warcraft appear to have attracted more female gamers to the online scene.Another surprising result from the latest study is the amount of older gamers that are also interested in online gaming. As you'd expect, the teenage market dominates any other age group in numbers, but the study does say that more than 15 million gamers (about 8%) are actually at least 45 years old. The study involved 2,200 gamers described as "active" who were 13 years or older and owned a gaming device and played games at least once a week.

Every Cs server i played on till today had COMPLETELY NO FEMALE PRESENCE.
It's more like men making hoax and getting their web identity as girls. Ofc that's it

But yeah, that isn't all too hard to believe. There are a ton of Flash and other browser based games that women like to play. And it is true that many women play RPGs and MMORPGs. But what I am thinking is if the people doing the study actually found out if the people playing were female, or if they just had female characters. WoW for instance, has tons of female characters that are actively played every week. But, many of these female characters are actually male.

imo the study was looking at active gamers and casual gamers. to be an active gamer u had to play a certain amount of hours a week.
gils made up 64 % of casual gamers not of overall gamers.
although thats what i remember i could be wrong but i doubt it.

More like 64% of online games have female characters with male players at the keyboard.
Why pick a picture of a Warlock's Succubus who can only be female?

My girlfriend loves playing Animal Crossing: Wild World, and enjoys visiting other towns via WFC, I'm not sure if this qualifies as on-line play because it's basically just walking around aimlessly in another person's town, but still.
I agree though that many female characters in games are played by males, I myself had two female characters in Flyff (a free MMORPG), I simply liked that way the female characters looked better than the male characters which looked like punks.
Anyway, good to know they are out there.

2. From reading the above notes, I'm guessing that some of the column readers are probably up past their bedtimes and should be studying grammar and spelling instead of commenting while still stuck in their pre-adolescent text-messaging stereotypes.
3. I think there are quite a few women that play online who don't identify themselves as such in the games because of "men" asking for on-line dates. Seriously, that just gets annoying.

more like half of them are g.i.r.l. guys in real life. girls can't play games or drive cars they belong in the kitchen and the laundry rooms.

Now, the truth: Girls play, but will only reveal themselves to the Players, and not those pervert losers.

Where did you hear that?
BTW, in relevent matters, I think can understand girls playing "online" games, ie puzzle games or tetris-esque games (yeah I know, EVERY girl plays tetris. It's like cleaning and organizing, video-game style, I swear).
