3DS technology: 3D without the glasses explained

Ó

Just the other day, I stepped into a demo booth for Panasonic's new 3DTV. While it was undoubtedly cool, I found the 3D glasses to be a tad uncomfortable. As I exited the demo booth, I thought about the 3DS. How does it manage to offer you 3D technology without the cumbersome glasses?

Like serendipity, I, along with all of you, will now be able to find the answer to that query, thanks to Kombo's Jeff Grub. In this video, he explains the 3D barrier system, its effective range, as well as the other stereoscopic 3D displays. It's almost like watching Discovery Channel.

While this is great for handhelds, shutter glasses are still the superior solution for 3D. The only thing that the 3DS beats shutter lenses is that it doesn't get darker from having only half the light in each eye.

Not superior. Just different. It's true it works better now, but that's just because it's the "easiest" way to do it right now.
I'm pretty sure there are articles online about tvs/monitors that can show glasses-less 3D from multiple perspectives.

I have been reading about 3D screens and TVs before Nintendo announced the 3DS and there are companies that develop 3D TVs without glasses. It was a while ago so I don't know which companies anymore but it does exist. There is even a company that makes a TV with more then one sweet spot so multiple people can watch the TV at the same time. I'm not sure it they sell them to the public already, but I sure wish to see it with my own eyes.

However a cheaper model like the one Nintendo uses which only has one sweet spot wouldn't be of any use as a family TV. The only reason it works on the DS is cause you automaticly hold it right infront of you.

Not sure what you read but I attended CES this year and there were only two companies with glassless screens and both of them:

1. Had a sweet spot.
2. Had pretty horrible resolutions.
3. Had ZERO consumer plans for 2010 and 2011.

Both companies said MAYBE 2011 you'll see these screens used with advertising with some companies. Think malls, airports and so forth.

I stopped the video at 47 second. I'm wondering if I should even continue. He just explained the images POPPED OFF THE SCREEN. That is complete BS. This tech gives you a 3D effects that goes INTO the screen. It gives you DEPTH ONLY. Nothing pops OFF the screen. So right off the bat, he doesn't know WTF he's talking about.

@ISOHaven

yet another person being a bitch to a video trying to help people, if you know of ANY 3D technology thactually TRUELY makes anything POP OFF any screen i would love to know, ALL 3D technology is doing nothing more than tricking your eyes into thinking there is more there than there is

be it with glasses or no glasses nothing EVER pops off the screen we aint living in the world of anything close to a film with holograms just yet so dont be a bitch atleast they actually thought about function and realised you dont want to look like an idiot sitting on a buss with retarded glasses on this technology fits handheld gaming perfectly no need for glasses and it doesnt matter if only 1 person can see it as your never really gonna be having 2 people play on the one screen at once

hopefully we get some constructive comment and ppl who think they can do better go and do so and dont post BS on here

LOL, WTF crawled up your ass? Any glasses based stereoscopic 3D effect can give you field of depth closer to you then the screen.

However, you can NOT achieve that effect with autostereoscopy . The same goes with head tracking.

Excuse me for wishing people actually knew WTF they were talking about instead of just puking the same information they read off the internet or from a book.

There's a HUGE difference between being a parrot and actually knowing something.

"stopwhinging" - HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! ! Said the guy who whined about a blog post. Get a life!

Ok, the trick that is delivering a separate image to each eye works both ways. If you hold something in front of your monitor your eyes see it as being closer so what is stopping showing two images of something in the same way as in real life? I know it works because I have seen in in action on not only my 3DS but also in 3D cinemas.
I am just commenting to kindly educate someone who has been miss informed

Maybe you should have thought about that post for at least a few more minutes. It might have made more sense if you had.

And you are dead wrong. Not all 3D effects are the same. Just one example would be head tracking. Try again.

"force feed morons like you it now"
Wow....
