Yuji Naka wants to work on Dreamcast 2 |
Listed in: PSP, Wii, PS3, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360 Tags: Dreamcast, prope, Sega

Yuji Naka may be more known as one of the minds behind the original Sonic the Hedgehog, but the former Sonic Team head has also had a hand in the development of the Sega Dreamcast. In an interview with CVG, the current Prope boss waxes ecstatic about the possibility of working on a follow-up to the Sega home console.
"I'm hoping to work on Dreamcast 2", Naka told CVG. "Of course Dreamcast was my baby back at Sega and I want to carry on making good games for the European market and one day I'm hoping it gives me the opportunity to work on Dreamcast 2.
"I do miss those old days when I was heavily involved in hardware making at Sega. I was involved in most of the consoles and controllers that Sega came up with."
Naka also expressed enthusiasm at collaborating with any of the big three platform holders on any kind of hardware development, even if it's not the actual Dreamcast successor.
"If I have the opportunity in the future I want to be involved again with hardware making," he said. "It would be ideal if I could become some sort of advisor working with the platform makers in future. I think if I can work really well with the platform makers then it's good for everyone, because I can then come up with totally new games."
Naka is currently promoting Prope's Wii upcoming game, Ivy the Kiwi?.

On the other hand, the game has changed quite a bit since then. Their once unbeatable rival, Sony, has fallen (I'm not exactly sure of the correlation, but it seems that Sony really started sucking after they got rid of Ken Kutaragi) and they're making nothing but bad business moves that piss of their customers lately. MS is doing inexplicably well (seriously, why would anybody buy a console with a 50% failure rate?!), but not as well as Nintendo.... and there's the rub: Nintendo has found a new game in going after the kids and casual gamers, which has so far proven to be pretty darn effective. With their current momentum, Nintendo would be pretty tough to beat in the casual market and the 360 will be tough to beat in the geek market. Sega would have to find a new way to do what Nintendon't if they want to compete.
Reply
Sega releases the mega drive, and then nec released the turbografx.
And then nintendo released the super nintendo. Which of those was supposedly the best? The last one to come out.
Sega abandoned the 32x because another team at sega was designing the Saturn at the same time.
If anything, sega was trying to look out for the consumer, by trying to upgrade the Genesis that most people had already. The sega cd was a step forward. Sega had been making arcade games since before you were born.
Of course they gave up. How can you compete with a company that waits for you to release a console, AND THEN releases their console after they have had time to address any potential problems that yours might have?
Arcade games need to make a comeback. They can easily outdo the home consoles, that only upgrade every 7 years.
Bring back the arcades SEGA!
Reply
Back then arcades in America and Europe still had some life to them. Back in the day of the Dreamcast, we had Soul Calibur, Rival Schools, Dead or Alive, Marvel Vs. Capcom 1 & 2, Street Fighter Alpha, Cannon Spike, Power Stone 1 & 2, House of the Dead, Ikaruga, not to mention awesome RPG's which the system wasn't known for such as Skies of Arcadia, and Grandure 2.
Every generation has their "Consumer grade" gaming system, but every generation also had "Arcade Systems" Ex: PC Engine, NeoGeo, Sega Genesis. To a gamer that loves really hard and competitive gaming these systems never lose their appeal. When someone has the ability to play the game at home, it's usually the most powerful piece of hardware available for purchase at the time, and arcade games flock to those systems.
As for online play, I remember playing Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, and Phantasy Star Online with very low lag, even when using dial up on some.
Thanks for considering this opinion everybody, I'm going to go play Powerstone 2 with some friends now.........

The Dreamcast was a very overrated system.
and ineedfiles the PS2 did not suck. There is not another system out there with the quality game library it has. It has the best games in every genre.
The PS2 stomped all over the Dreamcast and took a giant shit on its grave. The PS2 lasted 10 years, Dreamcast lasted 2.
No other system besides the PS1 has the quality of games the PS2 has.

And more often PC games were ported to the console than the other way around.
Although that has changed recently and have been finding very broken ports.

If they do follow it up, I'd definitely have my eye on it, but they better think it through a little better this time around.

I think that with proper planning SEGA can become a successful console maker again. I would definitively be interested in such a console.

Wasn't too hard to take out those padding files though...
That aside i'd totally like to see another DC..the VMU was a totally cool idea. With how powerful small electronics are now they could do the VMU properly this time.
Reply
Reply
The problem is that it would make controllers quite a bit more expensive (unless the handheld part was really cheap), so it wouldn't be practical as the main controller: they'd need a normal controller AND a handheld, which means they'd have to not only launch a new console, but a new handheld (which is a much more difficult market these days with the iphone and such). So yeah, cool idea, but not practical from a business standpoint... unless they were to work out some sort of deal with Apple to use the iphone as a controller.
Reply
Ya, the PSP was supposed to be used for things like a rear view mirror in racing games and other gimmicky crap.
I like the idea, like what if Radars in FPS were broadcast to the psp, or the command network map for MAG...but im not gonna look at the cushion next to me...glancing down at the controller wouldn't be hard.
I just remembered the big thing that was nice with a VMU like device. When you were playing 2 player NFL 2K you could pick your plays on the vmu in private.
Walo, I think basically your wish will come true when the PSP2 comes out.
The only thing stopping the psp from functioning as a controller for games is that it's missing an analog and two shoulder buttons. Most likely the PSP2 will introduce these things.

1. Dreamcast 2 demand is purely and mostly backed by nostalgia. In this day and age, it would kill Sega for how much it would take to invest in this console and deliver something better than S, M$, & N.
2. Sega has gotten weak @ advertising games. Mascots aren't doing well either. (Thanks to Sonic Team)
3. 3rd party multiplatformin g and simeltanious game releases would B harder and take longer.
Take time, and think about it!

Dreamcast never failed, it impressed/amazed the gamers, but it was unfortunately cancelled too early.

Still, neither MS or Sony has really made me feel my money was as well spent as it did on my DC.
So, I wouldn't mind seeing one of the current 3 getting phased out...but that is not going to happen and Sega doesn't have the money to survive in 4th place.

I think Sega can beat their console rivals if they do it correctly, because Dreamcast was awesome but they cancelled.

The little mem card and a bag and everything.
It was kind of a piece of junk though.
I cant respect a game console that plays CD's but intentionally omits fast forward and rewind.
I returned my xbox that same year for the same reason (well among a few others).
PS2 won that by default.

Do you know DVDs barely existed back then? And that PS1/PS2/PC games were burned on DVDs before CDs were mostly used for music instead of Games/Files?

I also have to agree that there really doesn't seem to be a spot for sega to fill.
WII has the casual gamers sewed up.
And sony is barely hanging on with the most powerful console.
xblot has online gaming pretty much monopolized.
The only angle sega might have is their own first party games, but they haven't made a great game in many years.
It would fail IMO.
The only system that sega ever made that would be an argument that they know what they're doing with hardware was the genesis.
And that was a long time ago and a different era.

I give a shit about the dreamcast, the only thing that console had going for it was crazy taxi. And that was fun for about 20 minutes.
Just to fuck with you though I'll point out that the playstation came out in 94 and managed to have better copy protection that the DC.
But once again, who gives a shit.
I cant think of a DC game that I want to download for free other than RUSH 2049 (ps2,n64) or hydrothunder (n64).

WTF? Only Crazy Taxi? Fucking idiot. Resident Evil Titles, Sonic Adventures, Jet Grind Radio, Soul Calibur, + more are better than Crazy Taxi.
Dreamcast >PSone in features, graphi cs, and of course, internet. Especially since you can play PSX games on Dreamcast using an emulator.
Reply
but, there's one very important thing you forgot:
PSone>Dreamcast in gameplay. thousands of games produced, a lot which revolutionized gaming history.
the very first gran turismo
the very first metal gear
the very first tekken
the very first parasite eve
the very first persona
a lot more I can name.
but yeah I would still say the dreamcast was a good console and would like to see a Dreamcast 2 if they will ever make one. We never got to see the dreamcast's full potential because they discontinued it too early

But "revolutionized" is churching it up a bit.
We were all online gaming on PC's already.
It was only a natural process that somebody would eventually get around to being the first to bring it to consoles.

I never understood stupid fools like you believing that hype.
Soulblade > soul calibur
Maybe you meant "soul fighter"?
Those sonic games were trash to.
Code veronica wasn't a great RE title.
Just more of the same shit as the last few.
There wasn't necessary RE until RE4.
BTW: you forgot to drag out that clunker shenmue.
I never got a chance to play it but I heard it took like 5-6 inputs and verifications to check a drawer or turn a fucking doorknob.
The best initially exclusive titles in the DC were probably jet grind and space channel 5.
Maybe skies of arcadia?
I never got a chance to play that either because I took the whole fucking thing back to the pawnshop and traded all the controllers and the system and games for 20 bucks credit.

You mean bleemcast?
3 games, and you can see a few more intro screens if you know how to hack PSX images you fucking bullshitter.

And like any emulator, some games don't work at all. It was give or take. Not unlike a lot of todays console emulators.
It required no hacking of PS1 images by the way, you shitstain. It plays retail games. Don't let your boyfriend grease your undies TOO bad now.

There were two ways to see a psx title screen on a DC, mod the psx image with the leaked 30% complete bleemcast beta or use a bootdisk.

there's no comparison, DC had a great library and it certainly didn't fail because of a weak library.

As far as FPS on a console it's has it's strengths and weaknesses.
I've been an FPS PC gamer since wolfenstein (mein laben!). Heavily up until DoD source. Most time Spent with Unreal, CS and some Dark forces 2 light sabering. So you could say I am quite used to KB+M.
I didn't get into the ones on DC (no dual analog). With dual analog and the xbox/halo I figured i'd give it a shot since all my buddies were having crazy halo lan parties. So had to shape up or be a nub.
Now, I think I might even prefer a controller. I have no problems putting the cursor on peoples head, no problems sniping. Jumping and "dancing" and movement in general is a lot easier to do(especially in games like unreal where you can double hop off walls n shit). I can spin around in circles and keep my cursor at headshot level the entire time (impossible with a kb+m, unless you use the turn buttons (q/e usually?) which still makes it less efficient and you are still prone to moving the mouse a tad and messing it up)
I dunno, just comes down to getting used to it and that is the hardest thing for people to do....because you will suck until it happens and some people can't handle that....get pissed off, blame the controller and go back to the PC so they can stroke their e peen.
Reply
I was never really great with the keyboard, never could make CS bunnyhop like some guys, but even a right analog just doesn't compare to whipping the mouse around IMO.
I can see what you mean though, how its just different and a trade off.
And if everybody was using the controller on a console then it would be even.
I've also gotten much more used to using a control pad and moving the character to adjust the reticule.

Never understood why anyone would rather play an FPS death match with a joypad than a mouse.
I still dont understand xbots either.

PS1 was easily pirated.
Dreamcast was released in 1999 not 1998 (unless you count the Japanese launch)
It came out on 9/9/1999. (PS1 came out 9/9/1995)
The internet did exist, it's existed since the late 60's. I was using it on my Commodore 64 back in the 80's.

The system had so many great games on it and some of the best first party games. Shenmu and Phantasy Star Online are amazing games.
If Sega released a Dreamcast 2 and pulled some games they plan putting on other systems as launch games then it'd be no contest. Yakuza 5, Yakuza of the End, Sonic 4, Phantasy Star Online 2, and Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown(which hasn't been announced on consoles) and it has an amazing launch lineup. Just think. They could then announce Shenmue 3, maybe release Dreamcast 1080p collections similar to Sony 1080p collections, Streets of Rage 4, Phantasy Star 5, Golden Axe 4, etc, etc, etc.
One thing if they decide to release the Dreamcast 2, don't just release garbage like the recent versions of Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Sonic. Really put work into these games and make your first party releases the best on the system, games that really make the system worth owning. Because Sega as a first party developer released some of the best games, but it just seems that the company has been doing bad as a third party developer and it wasn't until recently that they've been pushing amazing game after amazing game out one after another.
I'd buy a Dreamcast 2, Sega.
Reply
Sega can't produce good games anymore. They have the occasional hit but look at Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Their internal/first party devs produce the best games on their platforms.
Sega don't.
Of course if they did release a new Dreamcast 2 I do hope you buy it, you deserve it.
Reply
Getting those games was another story.
It was far from clicking on a single link to a torrent and waiting.
So few people knew or wanted to bother doing it that you could make money doing it for them.
DC succeeded for the few years it did because it was the newest thing until GC and PS2 came along and took over...
Also, yeah, Sony isn't putting out the JSR, Space channel 5, samba de amigo, chu chu rocket type games anymore. Those were orignal and great games. They are just rehashing garbage right now.

You had to get it chipped at first.
It wasn't so easy like using a dongle or softmodding the PSP or xblot.

But I remember seeing chipped DC's on ebay for awhile before it became obsolete to go through the trouble.

The original DC and even the Saturn were good consoles, but they didn't have the software support needed to win those rounds and that's why they failed. They also didn't market the machines all too well either. I remember buying gaming mags at the time and every second page had a Sony ad on it.
And for that guy who said that no more than three manufacturers can exist successfully in the market and that it wouldn't work because Sega would have to beat the established names in the market. Just a reminder, Sony came out of the shadows of a failed deal with Nintendo and created the PS1 and cleaned up. Later on MS came along with the Xbox out of nowhere and made it successful.
Moral of the story? You can make any console successful with two things, good marketing and software support. You miss even one of those things and no high end CPU/GPU combination will save your console from certain extinction.

Load times were through the roof.
The controller was horrible.
The software lineup had a few gems.
The world doesn't need a Dreamcast 2. Sega's recent gaming track record (by recent I mean in the last 5 years) has been dire. Their reviews average out at like 60%.
You simply can't run a console like that. Look at Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Their first party games are the highest rated on their consoles!

Or are you of the same train of thought that the PS1 controller is a SNES controller with another level of shoulder buttons and handles? Because using your logic - the PS1 controller is just the SNES controller.

I have analogue equipment from before the Dreamcast too (PS1, N64, PC controllers) and they still work as they did the day they were bought.
Dreamcast? Nope.
It's also uncomfortable. Again - go hold one. It's not ergonomic like either the Xbox or Xbox 360 controllers. The wire sticks out the front (terrible design decision). It supports 2 memory cards yet you can't see the display on the one at the back. It's just a brilliant example of how bad you can make a controller.
Oh and the dpad. People slam Microsoft for their dpad, yet Sega's is so much worse.
However unlike you I evaluate things based on logic and experience instead of calling people "retarded as fuck". You're not a devout Christian or Scientologist are you? That's the technique they use against atheists/agnostics.

The arcade stick is still in great shape too
DC d-pad was great for 2d fighters, once you got the pointed corners worn down a bit, MS and PS1/2/3 d-pads are terrible in comparison and I used to love the PS pads for 2d fighters
The only d-pad issue from the DC was the rubber pads underneath the plastic could tear if overused/abused during many long and tense fight sessions
VMU in the front, memory card at the back, what's so difficult to grasp?
The VMU battery life was awful though, thankfully it worked without them, plus the damn things kept beeping when they had batteries
Biggest problem with the DC pad is that it looks like crap

The Dreamcast failed for a lot of reasons.
1. It didn't have a DVD player.
Though new at the time DVD's were starting to come around 2000 to 2001.
2. You got more out of a PS2 than a DC.
PS2 cost about 200 dollars I think as the DC cost the same but you didn't get a DVD player as well with it. Hence it was outsold.
3. Piracy. It started to rear it's head around that time. And as such the DC GD-Rom technology was easily circumvented.
4. Company President. People actually blamed Bernie Stolar cause he said that American gamers didn't want RPG's. Look at Final Fantasy 7 lol.
5. Bad timing. After the fall of the Saturn the company was in the red and decided to release another console after many people had already lost faith in the company. That and after the release, the announcement of the PS2 didn't help.
6. Useless resources. Seganet. Shenmue, and other flops. That's it.
I would actually be thrilled if they released a new Dreamcast. Is one of the best systems I own. Sadly Sega said that being a third party developer is where Sega is gonna stay for awhile.
