Square Enix President and CEO Yoichi Wada has finally acknowledge the fan demand of Final Fantasy VII and has said that the Japanese publisher is willing to “explore” the possibility of remaking game. According to Wada:

Right now we don’t have a clear direction, but many fans have requested we remake Final Fantasy VII. We’re going to explore the possibility – whether or not we’re going to do it, if we’re going to do it, and the platform.

Last time we check, FF XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase has said:

If it were possible that we had all the right facilities and the right environment to be able to make and prepare a Final Fantasy VII remake within a year, we'd very much like a go at it!

Pssh! I'd be all over a remake. I'm sure I'd complain and never forgive them if they botched it, but I'd still buy it (just like Michael Bay's Transformers).

I doubt they'd botch it, though. The story and everything is already there. Just update the graphics and gameplay, make a few tweaks and/or add little bits here and there to the plot, and heh... translate it right this time (This guy are sick).

I admire your enthusiasm.

But if you felt compelled to buy michael bays transformers, and openly admit it, I'm not sure that your equipped with the discerning taste to determine whether something has been botched or not.

There are way too many FF Vii Remakes already! Make a remake of Viii or X or some game that has never gotten one.

When did VII get remade? Hell, even the earlier ones didn't start getting totally remade 'til the DS versions. Are you talking about the compilation? Those are continuations of the story in VII. Not remakes.
And if you don't like continuation

I also remember various other people from his company saying "Never going to happen"

I don't really understand why, they probably have virtually unlimited resources and even though they have quite a few projects going on, with FFXIII complete and out I'm sure they have some free time

Give the artists and coders something to do while the writers come up with a good new story, IMO. I guess the writers have plenty of time normally, but an extra year (can they really do it that fast?) to develop the story while everyone else is working on another project wouldn't be a bad thing.

The story's already there...just make a few tweaks to the dialogue. Update the world map and the battle system and they're good to go. Any more than that wouldn't be a remake, and I don't think I'd *want* any more than that.

# you serious?Guest 2010-03-24 05:23
you're saying you don't want the whole game to be remade? only the battle system?

we'd get a remake like those on the ds...you ever played that shit? fun yes, but vastly inferior to the originals.

the music needs to be redone, the movies, the battle system, the world in full 3d please, including towns, all areas and battle areas. the characters (we'd like some normal characters this time around, not this retared huurrdurr "look i have blocks and sticks for arms" crap.

a remake can be anything that uses the same concept as the old version, so your statement of more than remaking the WM and BS is pretty much invalid.

ask yourself this:

- Do i want block/stick characters which make you scream in terror when you're trying to feel connected to the main chracters?
- Do i want graphics as nice looking as FFXIII in this game?
- Do i want the battle system to be fresh new, and exciting for the whole game, instead of the old stuff we've been playing for over 12 years?
- Do i want new and higher quality versions of the old music?
- Do i want extra items, magic, espers and areas to explore?
- Do i want barret to remain his cool original game self?
- Do tifa's tits need normal proportions this time?
- does caith sith need to be removed from the game and story entirely? well no, but damn i hate that thing.

anyways all this in atmosphere of the original would be perfect, but the game needs to be new...if i wanted to play the same old game i'd pop in my ff7disc, PSN version, or if i'm feeling adventurous the pc version with remade character/music mods etc.

i want people who can't remember what square enix used to be called to STFU and GTFO.

This needs to be a tribute to the fans, not a commercial product to win over countless FFX noobs who think that: linearity, the world map selection screen, no vehicles, a turn based battle system which is based solely on Summons, and tidus is a pretty cool guy. (yes i meant the structure of the sentence this way.)

This subject really gets me furious as i've only seen high quality/low atmosphere games from Square since they merged with enix. They're turning money hungry. Play those old games and dare to tell me you don't feel fuzzy and warm inside when you play them. they look like ass when you look at it now but at least it has heart.

I want the story and gameplay to be exactly the same but with updated graphics, effects, and the music is subjective. The music is awesome as is but if they want to make it clearer with lossless audio I wouldn't mind as long as they keep the music exactly the same in tone and tune. Of course having the characters on the map sized correctly would be advisable with more polygons per character and such for realism.

Kitase was to take up on this they can start right now but, I rather wait until Tetsuya Nomura is done with everything he has at the moment and Kingdom Hearts 3 when its announced and then he can start work on FFVII for PS4 cause that's how busy his schedule is. I want an FFVII remake but I don't want Kitase to put his hands on it or we will get another underperforming Final Fantasy Title.

# actually now thatphiyuku 2010-03-23 12:21
i think about it. I would not mind since if they make a remake they will have to keep the experience as close as possible. Which means all that backtracking, TOWNS!!!! and everything else will have to stay, just with updated graphics. Of course Nomura will have to take some time off his projects and be the artist for yet another game. Since he was the artists of like every game since VII. Even FF XIII he was the artists and the artist and director of Versus.

it probably has something to do with the stock owners, who want the company to make as much profit as possible.

I think the developers themselves are doing the best they can, but it's the higher ups getting orders from the people who own the company for nothing other than money.

Squaresoft and enix made a game together before they merged, the game is called valkyrie profile, and altough a not so popular game, it's absolutely amazing. It just takes such a time to get used to that most people drop it after a few hours.

That game is proof that squaresoft as well as enix are both very creative companies who can have alot interesting products, the higher ups just won't let em, because truth be told, games for intelligent people don't sell.

So they made ff13

if they plan to create the game in a years time (which obviously is just speculation) then game will be one of those hd remakes or something cuz if they plan to actually remake it with final fantasy 13 graphics then it will take at least 4 years to make. but at least they're thinking about it :D  ;-) :-)

Reply

+1 # RE: oh ohGuest 2010-03-23 12:47
It wouldn't take 4 years. A lot of that time was figuring out story, character design, level layout, sound, and of course the new engine that they coded just for the game.

Game engines can take a long time to make. If they re-used the FFXIII engine, the game could come out pretty quickly, since they already know what the characters look like, what the story is, what the levels look like, and what everything sounds like. I would guess two years maximum if they re-used an engine that's already up and running.

If they used the same engine they used to make FFXIII then it wouldn't be a remake now would it?

Meh... this isn't as big news as it might have been a few years ago. They waited too long, and it's still not likely to see a release anytime soon.

By the time they finally get around to it the fanaticism will have died down that much more. They've already lost tons of potential sales.

Not in this example.

When something has remained popular, and arguably gained popularity after 13 years its got staying power.

Another 10+ years isn't gonna change that. Especially since the game is still widely available to play and be rediscovered by the next generation via PSN and emulation.

is it me or do square make some kind of non committal hint at a ff7 remake every single time they want an extra boost in publicity?
I mean each time the fan boy go YES! And people go 'i told u so' and 'see', while still others say it wont happen. it starts a huge debate. and the younger people who did not play ff7 wonder why its so good.

i mean im all for it. but i think they should lay off a bit until the time comes when they actually make it.

a ff7 seems like an ace up their sleeve for when they are not sure what to do next.

at least the game would (hopefully) have a coherent plot and events.

at times i felt like english ff7 had a really random translation.

what i don't like about that remake is that it will most likely be altered to fit together with additions further ff7 spinoffs made (genesis, ff7ac, dirge of cerberus, altered cloud vs sephiroth scene in nibelheim reactor, etc).

and most likely a lot of stuff will be cut out (i doubt they will dare to remake cloud's cross-dressing event ;))

i might sound like an ff7 fanboy but i haven't played this game in years. i still have fond memories of it, though.

i'd rather hope for ff8 remake, though ;) (i know, now going to happen).

# dude...Shatterdome 2010-03-23 07:59
They could not cut out the "cross-dressing" event....those are the types of things that made FF VII what it was. Not to mention a huge part of the basic plot....

Basically they could not touch any of the gameplay elements, only graphics, otherwise it'd be ruined.

the ff7 plot in general does make sense, but some conversations are impossible to understand. (the talk with aeris after cloud falls through the roof into the church is one such situation).

a lot of conversations are really messed up like that, and you can wonder what's the point of them anyway.

All they need to do for a "remake" is pump up the graphics to FF XIII levels and we will all be happy...

If they try adding a crystarium or any other garbage it will ruin it...the gameplay does not need to be touched.

I agree with most.. but..
I still think that they should add some new things like maybe a few new enemies or a new dungeon with extremely strong enemies and bosses. like they have done for every other Final fantasy remake.
As long as it does not change the gameplay until after you finnish the main story.

# RE: well...But Fukir 2010-03-23 18:39
Oh I'm sure they would add/alter a few things so that all the twists and puzzles wouldn't be exactly the same.

Unfortunately (IMO) they would also be sure to add skeevy action movie style cutscenes and groan inducing dialogue and voice acting just like they've done in every square property since 1998.

Square is no longer artistically qualified to do FF7 justice IMO. And haven't been for years.

The old square that created a handful of classic and amazing games between 93-98 is gone.

Im pretty sure that its mostly because its nostalgic for us. We loved that game when we where pretty young :)
and gaming will never be as good as it was back then. the same goes for things like pokemon and dragonball! (IMO)
FF7 was fantasic in its time and its still a good game even for those who never played the game. So the should focus on the graphics rather than gameplay. Give Cloud fingers and a face more than eyes!

A few things they would need to do though, to please the fans whose requests have made them decide to do it (if they do) and thats
1) Nobuo Uematsu re doing the music...a completely differen OST would ruin it imo.

2) Don't make alterations that fit with the other Compilation of FF7 titles.

3)Quite literally don't touch the battle system

4) An translation overlooked by a native English speaker, and voice acting.

5) Golden Saucer online.

If they can't manage that, then remake VI instead, that one was awesome.

This is really pissing me off, it seems the only words they know are: "maybe later, we can't discard the possibility, we are not sure, we're exploring the possibility, we're not thinking about it at the moment, etc...". Get a grip already and say "Yes" or "No". That's what people wanna hear, a simple two or three letter word.

As stated way above, I think it would be a smart move to have it as a PS4 launch title. It would definatly make some poeple buy it, I would, the deluxe model paired with FF7 remake and take a week off work :)

Also I do think that waited far too long. Hopefully they can capture a younger generation w/o voice acting etc. Otherwise they are stuck with 12yr+ later, old nestalgioc*sp players that have responsibilitie s and need to find the time to not only play it, but get out and buy it.

While it would be smart for sony to be a ps4 launch title, it would not be a good move for square. The install base would be too small, even with all the big fans buying it. Developers want money. That's what all companies are after. Hell they need it to keep making games. Releasing it on PS3 and the 360 near before the next gen comes out would be the best way to ensure the most profit in the near future.

# RE: I disagreeBut Fukir 2010-03-23 16:54
I'm sure the install base would swell over night. An FF7 remake would sell the system even more than the first one did IMO.

I still dont trust square to make a good remake though.

It's either going to go one of 2 ways;

Xbox 360 and PS3 game using the FF13 engine.

Or a PSP game.

From a financial standpoint both would be possibilities given the engine and tools exist to produce this on the 13 engine, and everyone knows PSP games are relatively cheap to produce. I'm hoping for the PSP version. Also hoping they keep the traditional battle system and all that. All they need to do is have updated graphics, music and translation. That's it!

Well, this isn't great news or whatever...I HAVE a great news for you guys. SEGA confirmed that PSYCHO FOX HD!! Its unbelieveble!! Sega said that the "new" Psycho Fox will have the same story, backgrounds, chacracter from original SEGA MASTER SYSTEM version, but in HIGH DEFINITION graphics! This is going to be released only for PS3, cause of limited space in DVD's. So, you guys can wait for more than 9GB in Psycho Fox REMAKE HD.
TAkoku Nakara, the main producer of the game, already said the the songs will be fully recorded with orchestra and chorus, and he fully garanted that the all the glory of PF will be present in the HD version. He said in the same interview that Sega learnt that remake old series into HD are a must for fans (anyone said Sonic 4??), and they care about fans. So the music THE DONT CARE ABOUT US from Michael Jackson doesnt seems to be the soundtrack of SEGA these days guys. Best Regards, and lets wait this shining jewel to be released!

If i recall, wasn't it in an interview with some producer or director of 13 says something about they Tested 13's engines, and graphics using a 7's teaser from some E3 or something??? Remember that???

So, they probably have everything on their pockets.
Is only matters of take them all out and then put them together.
I definitely believe it CAN BE DONE IN a YEAR or litter bit more. I'll wait.
Is so much better to Anticipate a Re-make now a days then an new release. They ALL FREAKING DISAPPOINTING :-x :-x :-x

I agree.

But the only problem with that logic is, if they haven't been able to not hamstring every new property they've made for years, then it would likely require nothing short of an unheard of collusion of fates for them to not ruin a FF7 remake too.

square enix should take their time with this game and only make it for one system a game made for playstation should stay in playstation. a system with alot of untapped potential would work best to bring the best out of one of the best ff titles. a confrontation with sephiroth maybe even in 3d.as for improvments of course add some extras to the game like crazy secret bosses and challenges and finally just keep the rest of the game the way it was battle system for example.

I think this remake would be for PSP rather than PS3 or XBOX as he resources needed to make FF VII again with all its towns etc in HD would huge and in one year? No way would FF VII for PS3 be ready in only one year.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a remake on the PS3 but i think it would be more practical for square to do a crisis core style grpahics remake with the FF VII battle system and see if they can pull that of before trying to go for the PS3 or MAYBE just maybe the XBOX if microsoft have the cash

Dude... here. Literal script examples:

"Get in here, fools!! We're startin' the meetin'!!"
----
"The hell would I know? Do I look like a mind reader?"
(He hits a crate with his fist.)
"Hmph!! If y'all weren't such screw-ups..."
----
"You damn right, you're late!!"
"Come waltzin' in here makin' a big scene!"
----
"Shi't!"
"Havin' everyone worried like that you don't give a damn 'bout no
one but yourself!"
----
"Stop actin' like a damn kid. Si'down an' shu'up!"
----
Ok, that's enough. Just google the script, and ctrl+f the word "damn" and the majority of it is Barret and his stereotypical ebonics suited for the stereotypical "Ice Cube" type. I'm almost 100% certain they'll just use Beau M. Billingslea, since SE has been fairly constant with their VA's. But he was also pretty stereotypical in the few seconds we hear him, so you probably wouldn't like it anyways...

I thought he fit though. It was pretty much the voice he had in my mind when I played the game. :D

Thats pretty much what we'd probably get. I know he was always a stereotype, almost all the characters where archetypes or stereotypes of some sort.

Skikey haired reluctant hero, hot nerd girl, spunky tomboy girl, etc.

I'm more bothered by Squares fixation on making there games into movies.

They seem to have this weird concept that their games will be more entertaining with awful action movie style cinematics. With horrendous dialogue, ham handed emo and a disturbing predilection for the kneejerk ethnic stereotypes taken to new embarrassing levels with exaggerated voice acting.

Ever since ffx they've been doing this. I couldn't get halfway through ffx because the Tongan dude or whatever was so awful (and blitzball, and unskippable cutscenes, etc, etc). I dont know a lot of tongans, but I'd like to assume that they aren't all that irritating.

Barret was always a caricature of Mr.T, who was himself an exaggerated caricature. But it was ignorable with just the ebonical misspelling here the uncalled for outburst of anger there.

I can only imagine in a nightmare though how overwhelming it would be if they gave the image that I'll bet is in their head a VOICE!

And whats up with non-skippable cutscenes in 2010?!
Square seems to be so in love with the terrible "movies" they're making that they just cant imagine someone not wanting to sit through each one in its entirety I guess.

There's just so many wrongheaded about Square these days IMO that I really really dont want to see how they would smear that one great game even more than they already have so far.

i pretty much hate the whole rpg genre but ff vii and crisis core were the only 2 rpg's i ever liked (mostly because i saw advent children before playing the game). from being a ps1 owner for a few years as a kid, it was my favorite system and the graphics, environment, and music make me feel nostalgic about the times i had a ps1. if i had know about this game as a kid, it would have definitely been my favorite. so if they remade it and released it for the ps3, i might have a purpose of buying one (i love the ps3 but recently i've been slowly moving away from video games for a personal cause)

let's not kid ourselves. it won't be the same game. you won't feel the same as when you were playing the original ff7. people tend to forget that and think they will get something perfect when it comes out (something like advent children hype)

they'll likely polish the graphics, add some over-the-top action sequences, and that's pretty much it.

there is danger they will change a lot, too.

i just hope it will not be done the way ff6 for psx was ;)

# Some thoughts.Guest 2010-03-27 09:37
Wow this is just too crazy right here.
Ok just a couple of things i've read along the way down i would like to speak on.

1. About the cutscenes not skippable in 2010: in FF13 you can, press start and then select (on 360 at least).

2. Somebody was talking about a ff13enginge demo with ff7scenes:
I think that was a Tech demo they used to show the ps3's power back when it first hit the market. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoRTc16VU5A this shows the difference between the intro's, and keep in my the tech demo was made over 3years ago.

3. i read about people saying it's probably gonna be a psp remake:
Why do that, ok true it's a quick job to finish, but do you really want that to be the remake of your magnum opus??
with 9.8million it's the best selling game in the series. 2nd is VIII (8.15m)
3rd is X (6.6m)

So here's a chance to do it good, wich i think they will. You can sell to the old folks and meanwhile get the new crowd in for an epic event. Even if the game were to be the same with just the graphics updated i'd go out and buy it.

Some thing should be updated ofcourse, like the minigames u come across in the game. Just imagine the gold saucer as an ingame arcade hall with 20 games to play and maybe earn some items with. Put some people on the chocobo races and breeding. It was already nice to play back then, but it could be done so much nicer these days.

What made FVII so good to play was that it was always surprising. You could just wander around and find stuff from items to materia and gold. I think the battle- and magicsystem worked excellent. The way you could combine the elements with your weapons, and the mastering of materia.

And i agree they should not change the music of the game, maybe add some new stuff, but definitely keep the original tracks. And obviously re record the music. This is what it'll sound like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzz5cVt70j8

The story of the game was awesome, so don't ever change that, maybe just add some more background, a couple more sidequests to do, go crazy with it. If it were up to me it would be ffVII vibes, story, magic- battle system. But then make it massive! just put the world in a sandbox think Oblivion or red dead redemption. Make it a PS4 launch title and it's over, then we can all die in peace.

Bye now!

It's gonna happen. They're definitely going to remake Final Fantasy VII for sure. It's just too much of a classic. I'm not gonna hype myself up for it, because Square-Enix is just WAY TOO BUSy right now to be able to remake FF7. They would have to call Uematsu back, Nomura is already working on a bunch of games. 3 more kingdom hearts games (excluding 358/2 days, PSp, and phone game), as well as Versus XIII, and Agito.

So don't expect this to come out until like 2014. I'm not sure if it will be the same without Sakaguchi though. I miss that guy making Final Fantasy games. It's just not the same anymore without him. : (. I hope Nomura will impress me with Versus.
