Yamauchi: I don't pay attention to other racing games

Polyphony Digital head honcho Kazunori Yamauchi had some rather harsh words for his competitors in a recent interview with Eurogamer.dk. According to the father of the Gran Turismo series, he finds it hard to play other racing games for more than five minutes at a time due to their low quality.

Here's what Yamauchi said in reply to a question of whether or not he checks out the competition while developing his own games (please forgive Google's sometimes garbled translations):

We skeleton not to other games while we develop Gran Turismo - it is solely based on what we want to achieve with the game. In fact, I find it hard to play the other games in more than five minutes at a time. Previews low level of quality really shines through in the other games and I can not keep them out!

Harsh, but then again, the man and his team have put out awesome racing games in the past. Gran Turismo 5 may not have a set release date yet, but judging by the previews we've seen it seems to be up to the high standards of Yamauchi and his crew. Well it better be, what with all the delays.

Well i hope at least that the team pays attention to other games. Especially Forza 3 and all it's cool features. Changing engines and drive trains is awesomely fun and the engines even have the real Tech names as well! For example; Instead of just "Change to a turbocharged inline 6 engine" when buying a new engine for the Datsun 510, it instead gives the whole name and features of the Skyline Nür Engine and that is really high quality if you ask me. It shows that the team really wants you to feel like you're actually building a car.

I hope the GT5 team does include these kind of tuning abilities and also some visual improvements for the cars, such as body kits and stuff.

I think it would be foolish of them if they didn't include these things.

I kind of wish they'd somehow make it /fun/. The gran Tourismo games have been visually and mechanically such high quality for a while now... but the gameplay has been nearly identical since GT2.

I guess if you're a purist, thats fine... but in the end it's really kind of boring if you arent some rabid GT fanboy.

does he play his own games.. I couldnt play Gran Turismo 4 or PSP for more then 2 minutes without thinking wow these games suck.. Forza 3 is awsome.. Motor Storm awsome.. this dude needs a reality check about what gaming is these days

in terms of quality and work put into a game, yeah GT kicks ass. But if he can't sit down to say... NFS or Dirt and enjoy it... then there's something wrong with him.

Look at it like this. What types of games do you not like to play. That applies Yamauchi and different types of racing games.

I obviously like a wider range of racing games than he does, but I'm not going to bash him for his opinion.

And if you don't like Gran Turismo, that doesn't mean it sucks. Just not your type of game. Either your skill level is lower than others, your expectations are lower than others, you don't know a good game when you see one, or you just don't like realistic games.

i will not buy five. forza is the better game here.

Apparently they are adding car damage to #5 here. (at least I remember them mentioning it being in there and as one of the reasons it was delayed)

The only other racing game that Ive played for any length of time since GT2 was burnout, and that is more just silly fun then racing. Every other racing game is just terrible, especially NFS. And for the record, gt4 was built on completely new programing, so no, it hasn't been identical since GT2.

All of this said, GT PSP sucked beyond belief since most of the fun is buying whatever car you want, whenever you want, and then improving it, both of which were broken or missing in the PSP version.

As for swapping motors like forza, that is just silly if you appreciate what GT tries to accomplish. It is supposed to be an interactive museum of cars. To preserve this, the only modifications allowed are the performance parts available from the original manufacturer. Even if you physically could shove an engine out of a skyline into a nissan sentra, wtf is the point?

It's pretty obvious by these comments that you guys don't really comprehend the term "simulator" rather than "arcade racer."

It only bores you guys because you're not zipping through billboards going 365 mph, getting chased by cops who pilot helicopters that drop mini-nukes on your face.

Gran turismo is the best racing series hands down, they make the games not based on they competitors because they make the game to be a simulator, which forza tries to be. they make it so that you know how it feels to drive regular cars that you never could. as for engine swaps i think that is kind of pointless, in real life most people fixing up there cars dont swap engines rather add turbos and other internal modifications, besides all those crappy civic B16 swaps. as for body kits it just makes the game look cheazzy, cheap and arcadish

i think you'll find in most amateur racing an engine change is very common, for example i have a friend running a stripped out ford fiesta with a corvette V6 under the bonnet and he uses it for brisca hot rod racing

guys i play forza but its totaly a low quality game for a new gen .

no weather
no road efects ( water , dust , leafs )
bad out road phisics
web site gui menu

GT has been longtime before any simulation game so i dont see why they should see a to a game game made by a gran turismo 1 playar "lol "

There's been 3 Forza's since then and each one better than the last, Forza 3 is a genuinely good game which isn't diluted with stupid bullshit like F1, Kart, Nascar, Motorbikes or whatever retarded shit these idiots at PD claim they can do 'best'

That makes complete sende...... I've played forza 3 and it's a damn good game, DAMN good. But i personally believe that GT5 will be better, because whereas Microsoft build on their previous game. PD created an entirely new game engine for GT5. And they really are dedicated to making a great game. And so what if it is delayed? More time to improve the game if you ask me.

Yamauchi shouldn't be saying shit about other racing games being of lower quality.
At least other developers do not suffer from perfectionism, and get their products out.

Oh, and GT5 does suffer from one flaw.
Theres no dirt, anywhere, EVERYTHING IS TOO DAMN CLEAN AND SHINY.

How can he not pay attention to the competitors if he can't learn from them? To learn from the competitors, a game designer must check what they have done right and what they have done wrong.

From the way Yamauchi commented this, he finally showed his arrogance. Seriously Yamauchi, learn from your competitors before you think this way. Otherwise, you will still be a failure if you don't play their games, but yours.
