Xbox 360 slimming down?

This picture shows us what supposedly are the insides of a new Xbox 360. It's got the CPU and GPU in a single chip, it's got the much-needed fan, and more importantly, smaller.

This new board, the rumor has it, has recently completed the testing phase in China and is reportedly coming to a totally redesigned console.

The source might be a little shady, but with a Natal coming out later in the year and a growing need for the Xbox 360 to stay competitive, there might actually be an Xbox 360 Slim in the future.

well when i look at it it looks like the front mounted usb that you see may be the memory card slot. its similar shape to the current one. it does look like it has one usb solt in the front and 2 in the back.
I may be wrong so dont think im trashing you. lol good analysis though.

No worries, the slots front right are definitely usb slots, you can see the 2 prongs that locate into the dimples on the usb plug. The other front housing I should think is for the wireless ring of light board to plug into. memory card slots are slightly wider with 3 forward prongs and 2 that stick up.

Also noticed what looks like 2 sata connectors and a lack of an external hdd port. Just guess tho ;)

Yep. Those are definitely sata ports on the motherboard. I wonder if they are there only for testing purposes though. They may be removed on the final product or replaced with a different fixture. I doubt this allows for any drive to be connected. (come on I know some of you are thinking that).

With all due respect, it's kind of hard for it to get slimmer, seeing as the harddrive is already as big as it is on the end, unless they start selling 2 different models, which I really don't see Microsoft doing, but then again, they've surprised us before, anythings possible. :P

So the 360 can't have a slimmer version of its console because Sony already did it? Just like there can't be a PSP since there was already a handheld on the market? Hmmm, i see.

is the Heat Sink? The old one had what 2 heatsinks and a 2 fans. This has 1 fan.... Might be missing the two other fans since they are not rly part of the mobo just like how the dvd drive is missing. Still might be a slim Xbox 360 which would just give less surface area to dissipate heat which would make the console hotter and more likely to RRoD. As well there is also the problem of that huge power brick that the Xbox 360 has. Whats the point of being slim when the power brick is bigger than the console.

Well the one heatsink is right under the fan. No need for the other pair since the cpu/gpu are integrated as one chip on this board. Or at least it seems that way.

i do have a 360, and (even tho i'm not a huge fan of microsoft...) i don't think they're copying sony. i think they just see a way to improve the 360 just like sony did with the ps3 and so they're going for it. i am kinda mad tho that i just bought a 360 a couple months ago and now i'm going to have to sell it for this...anyone else feel like game companies wait for you to buy their stuff so they can turn around and immediately sell something else? (nintendo ds anyone? haha)

Hmm, as long as they fixed the very underlying horrible reliability of the motherboard, and the way it keeps its components on then things should be a lot better. That heatsink and fan looks good enough for a board that size.

Having another look, the only real thing they've got to cool IS the CPU, and the 360 games utilize the GPU over anything, but will it be good enough since its integrated? They tend to be slower than say a dedicated slot in PCI-E in PC's. But if they've cracked a good bandwidth, this could actually be a very good motherboard.

I'm actually looking at this with anticipation since this seems to solve a lot of reliability issues, fewer 'slotted' components, and a big fan.

Has Micro$oft done something right?

Why would M$ support a Sony proprietary invention?

You'd see Hell Freeze over before they give profits to their competitors.

I don't care about any of these useless details. All I care about is whether or not these new 360s will have the RRoD problem.
