hugo-chavez-hof2In Venezuela, it's not enough to have violent video games banned from their stores. Nor is it enough to make it illegal to import these said games. No, Hugo Chavez always goes the extra mile, and he's making sure his people will do as he bids. Or else they'll go to prison for up to 3-5 years.

The law known as the Prohibition of Violent Video Games and Toys was passed back in November of 2009, but was only ratified and took effect last Wednesday.

Here are the Articles that you will definitely want to know if you're a gamer in Venezuela:

1. Violent video games: Video games or programs that can be use on personal computers, arcade systems, video game consoles, portable devices or mobile telephones, or any other electronic or telephonic device, that contain information or images that promote or incite violence and the use of weapons.

2. Violent toys: Objects or instruments that in form mimic any kind of weapon used by the National Bolivarian Armed Forces, weapons of war used by any other nation, citizen or state security forces, as well as those that, though not promoting war, establish the kind of game that stimulates aggressiveness or violence.

Article 13. Those who in any way promote the purchase or use of violent toys or video games as defined by this law will be punished with a fine of between 2,000 and 4,000 tax units.

Article 14. Those who import, manufacture, sell, rent, or distribute violent toys or video games will be punished with 3 to 5 years in prison.

You should know Hugo Chavez - this guy doesn't play around.

Talk about control. damn! This guy is going one bit too far in my opinion. I play a lot of violent games but I never HAVE or HAD the urge to kill someone in real life. A game is a game.

You think that sounds ridiculus..
In most countries you can be put in prision just for growing a plant, in some of those countries even the seeds

I don't think these policies are aimed at people with strong, positive moral values like you.

The fact of the matter is that there are some quite jumped up people out there who only need a bit of inspiration to do very bad things.

Thats sure some "fair and balanced" reporting there. Like fox news "fair and balanced." like "bunch of righty bullshit masquerading as news." So, tell me Mabie, how did Hugo pass this law all by himself? Did you do any research?

If you didn't have your head so far up your anus, slack04, you would have clicked on the [Via] link and seen it that it links to a legit source. With two clicks, you find yourself at this site: http://www.latamdaily.com/2010/03/07/venezuela-bans-violent-video-games-and-toys/ and low-and-behold, it says the exact same thing Mabie reported. Stop parading on the anti-rightwing bandwagon and learn to think with your own brain for once.

@ Slack04, Hugo has an absolute control over everything in Venezuela, basically what he says is what is done, no questions asked. This guy has banned television networks on the basis of "treason" just because they spoke bad about him. He managed to "win" a referendum eliminating presidential term limits when the people was clearly against it. After all that, passing an "insignificant" video game law is just a walk in the park.

Nope, just GTFO and take your mindless bashing with you. It's funny that YOU of all people, are talking about rhetoric when you buy into the whole blue red bullshit, LMAO. Prattle on now little one.

Good scoop mabie, I read the news daily and didn't see anything about this.

He's been stealing freedom from Venezualians since he got into power. Did you know it's illegal to make money there? Well technically it's not, but any business owner runs a halfway decent chance that the government will come in and nationalize the business (and if you don't comply then you get tossed in prison). I'd have mentioned any media, but that was the first thing he took over so there is no free media in his nation. Sounds a bit like China.

Imagine you go on a business trip or on holiday in Venezuela, and as is common theses days, you bring your laptop. And you forget to remove / hide your old, nostalgic "Doom"-copy...

I'm sure this law will make for many funny trials, and will criminalize a lot of otherwise perfectly "clean" and productive citizens.

For everything that Chavez does to impress me he does something equally asinine to bring him back to zero.

Reminds me of murika.

I guess the quality of any at least minimally sophisticated society in the world really is only relative.

If Hugo does so many things that impress you why don't you go and live under the tin horn dictators repressive regime? Tell me what's holding you back? I'm sure we could raise the funds here for a one way ticket. Before you become to impressed why not look and see what those that live under his rule think. You make me fuck/ng sick.

I'm reminded of this clip from Parks and Recreation:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FizXGoPkVs

Raul: "This is outrageous. Where are the armed men who come in to take the protestors away? Where are they? This kind of behavior is never tolerated in Baracua. You shout like that they put you in jail. Right away. No trial, no nothing. Journalists, we have a special jail for journalists. You are stealing: right to jail. You are playing music too loud: right to jail, right away. Driving too fast: jail. Slow: jail. You are charging too high prices for sweaters, glasses: you right to jail. You undercook fish? Believe it or not, jail. You overcook chicken, also jail. Undercook, overcook. You make an appointment with the dentist and you don't show up, believe it or not, jail, right away. We have the best patients in the world because of jail."

Why do you play a game if it doesn't affect you? I guess 'getting affected' is why people want to play it again. And again.

And buy every other war-title; games that all are the same game with another "skin" on top of it, but still buy it because everybody moved to that game.

You do see the waste of time and money there, right? You do see how that time would be far better spent, for instance, by reading a book... That's something beneficial for you and your family; not only the media and military apparatus. Funny thing is, that most of those people playing these games wouldn't mind working for the military, controller in hand, remotely shooting people up. They could even "enjoy" such a job...

Yep people have been affected by the games -- stop being in denial: if you get a kick out of running around in a virtual environment, killing people and whine about how other countries try to tackle this attitude problem, you really need some serious help.

I am curious how the ban works out in the long run and wonder if something similar will be applied globally. It can only benefit the quality of the other types of games. Games that are actually *games* and not war-simulations.

Dude, shut up. You wanna go read a book, knock yourself out man. But don't come onto a GAMING website and post about how games are a waste of time, cause frankly, you're exactly that. Go read some Twilight.

And its not an "attitude problem" its having a little thing called "fun."

Apparently you don't read very much either since you've completely failed to take into account the context here. Chavez isn't doing this cause of "attitude problems," he's doing it cause he doesn't want an open revolt against his government. Dumbs**t.

It's going to be really hard for you to accept the fact that video gaming is going to be part of our culture in the future. Video Gaming is become more accepted by today's society every year, like watching movies, and listening to music.

There's a solution to that. Just create a law that obligates ISPs to filter internet content and monitor "suspicious activity". Knowing how Hugo thinks, that's what he would do.
