A developer blog post on the EU Sega blog offers an interesting glimpse into some of the Vanquish designs that got cut from the final game. It also has an awesome design pic of this killer robot dog:

Yoshifumi Hattori, who handled character modeling on the Platinum Games shooter, explains that the dog would have acted as a support character for hero Sam. It would also have been able to combine with Sam for additional armor and firepower. The dog survived through the modeling phase but eventually got scrapped due to gameplay considerations.
Another support character that didn't make the final cut was a female android partner who was supposed to combine with Sam to become his armor. "As the player would hoist her up," explained Hattori , "their bodies would change shape in various ways from forming an enormous gun to having the android change into a boomerang and be thrown into the field."
