Valve: No Portal 2 for PS3 |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: portal 2, Valve Corporation
Ó

Despite the original Portal appearing on Sony's home video game console, Valve's Doug Lombardi has said that the same won't hold true with the sequel.
According to Eurogamer, Lombardi has confirmed that the recently-announced Portal 2 will be heading for Xbox 360 and PC only. No reason given but hopefully we'll find out why in the next Game Informer issue, which carries a feature on the game.
Portal's PS3 version was released as part of the Orange Box. Development of this version wasn't handled by Valve but was instead outsourced to EA.

Anyways, the game will be superior on PC. PC games is what people think when they hear anything Half-life or Valve related., because that's ewxactly what they're good at. Anyways, no you can buy the game on PC for probably 20-40 bucks instead of 60. Sounds like a win win to me.
Reply
I don't think you understand how processors works the PS3 and 360 actually have the same Cell Processor the only difference is the 360 is a bit modified cause it was intended for the PS3. In reality the 360 CPU is the son of the Cell Processor so the instructions are the same the only difference is how the information is read. PS3 is more like "I'll read the files first before dumping them in to the GPU" while the 360 just dumps it all in to the GPU. This actually explains why the PS3 hasn't been cracked and at the same time it doesn't have the same fail-rate as the 360 but anyway the PS3 and 360 have the same instructions it just where you put the workload first.

u could say IBM double crossed Sony on the Cell R&D.
unfortunately nowadays most of the game developers on PC take the easy route by dumping most of the work on GPU ...thats not the right thing to do which makes the requirement high on GPU side.
Microsoft designed the xbox360 to work like that, and u know the GPU was the cause of RROD failure.
But with the cell in PS3 they wanted to do it in the proper but yet the harder way thought the CPU.
Reply
Most games today let the GPU do the hard work. Tha's why a powerful graphics card is more important than the CPU.
Sony made the exact opposite. They wanted to put the stress back on the CPU with the PS3 and thus integrated a powerful CPU but a weak GPU. That's one of the main reasons why devs have a problem with the PS3.

Also, PS3 has no games.

Quoting Xis That Kid:
LOL come on flame on us more..
I was just tring to state facts about the console design but not with Flaming words and unsupported opinions like that.
yes honestly I didn't know about the source engine.
And no we didn't flame on valve we just said that in general. anyway I draw my words.
But could u tell me why " Source Engine" support xbox360 and not gonna support PS3?
is it because Gabe Newell is a Microsoft guy after all?
why they didn't port it along with the PS3 orange box released by EA?
They are even bringing it to mac and Linux systems.
...
@Xis That Kid
people differ in their opinions, taste and preferences we are not genetic clones to like the same thing or dislike the other.
what u might consider not a game it might be perceived as very good one to others.
when I don't like FPS. is that a crime?

I have both (360/PS3), and convince yourself with your 4:6 STANDARD DEFINITION that Blu-Ray is dead. Honestly now..

Aplogy #2, my bad... I honestly thought you had a SD TV with the Blu-Ray dead stuff!

It's not like it uses a totally new language that they have to learn.
It is more about theory and know how to structure their programs for the PS3....they could easy learn that in a month if they focused on it.

Not that I'd buy the game on a console anyway (it's more of a PC game), but still, it's laziness. How come EVERY other major third-party dev has been able to figure the PS3 out?

lol @ Jabba The Hutt..
Anyway to all who didnt know "Gabe Newell" was once quoted in 2007 that ps3 in general was a waste of everybody's time:
"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted,"
Reply
Reply
I can think of maybe 3 reasons why they dont:
1)They're lazy and dont wanna learn the ps3
2)They're not happy with their skill with the ps3 yet and want their first proper release on the system to be of a high standard.(hopefully)
3)(For the conspiracy lovers)Microsof t in coalition with the reverse vampires are paying them off not to release titles for the ps3 in an effort to destroy the ps3 and eliminate the meal of dinner.

I doubt its that, anyone that interested in a valve game will play it on pc.

Basically a re-write of the code is needed to put it on PS3 and probably costs more in time and resources than they feel is worth it.
Most dev's are using Unreal 3 or have an engine that makes the transition from 360 to PS3 and vice versa easier....valve has no such thing, source is still very much a PC engine.

If not, quit your bitching and go play Cod:MW2357. Or whatever other diluted PC franchise you PS3 sheep are playing.

Seriously, most of their games can run on low end PCs. The requirements aren't that high. That's good and all but why so many problems with PS3?
I'm more than sure a good company can translate Source engine to PS3 without problems.
Good example of this is: CryEngine 3 is coming for PS3 and X360...

You are not very smart are you?
First off, trophies? You base a game off fucking trophies?
Secondly, Games for most consoles are designed on PCS and in some cases Macs.
Thirdly, The PS3 basically runs off what 'microshit' invented years ago.
So don't say such things, it makes you look retarded

Simply one sale lost for Valve. Companies should expand their customer base. Looks like Valve is still mismanaged.

valve wants their games to last, cs 1.6 is still one of the biggest games in the world, even beating out the updated css. cs1.6 is even part of the world cyber games along side games like starcraft.
the most likely reason they don't port to the ps3 is EA probably wanted more money.
and its not viable for them to learn ps3 coding because their not producing games ment for the ps3, their producing pc games and porting them. and its easier to port on the 360 because it uses dx9 so its viable.
But i Just think EA just got Greedy and jacked the price up on valve.

As mentioned in the article, EA handled the PS3 port. Maybe EA didn't want to port Portal 2.
Reply
I think PC ports to consoles are stupid regardless of what console they go to. I own a PS3 and I wouldn't touch the orange box if you paid me.
>Less than stellar ability to update content
>Typically gimped controls
>Joystick vs. Mouse
Let the xbox have their cake. I'll be playing it on my computer.

lol @ whoever the dolt is that said Microsoft funded Steam, they are trying to kill it with Games for Windows On Demand. You people see things so simply, are you all twelve or something? Valve doesn't want to waste their time hiring development and support staff to figure out how to code games on Sony's pig disgusting Cell chip and I don't blame them.

Methinks there's some collusion involved.

Why would you be upset anyways? Valve games suck on consoles. Their engine is quite scalable... I can play all their games on my x1600 ancient computer from 2006 (main machine too). Yet here I am just flat out enjoying their games.

The PS3 uses a IBM PowerPC processors which are alot different from the intel processors that PC's and xbox 360's use.
There are 2 ways to fix this, either emulation (which takes a LOT of processing power) or conversion (which thakes long time to do). Valve is not lazy, they decided that Xbox 360 would be the most profitable of the 2 consoles.
Also the ps3 has no games

For you that says: "PS3 got no games", yes it does:
God of War 1-3 (third with 93 metascore)
Heavy Rain (87 metascore)
LittleBigPlanet (95 metascore, 1 less than HL2)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (94 metascore)
Uncharted 2 (96 metascore, same as HL2, 38 100:s)
Uncharted (88 metascore)
Killzone 2 (91 metascore)
Resistance 1 (87 metascore)
Resistance 2 (86 metascore)
... You get the thing...
Also, a huge difference between the 360 and the PS3 is that for the 360, you need to pay to play online.
You got to pay for playing with your friends...
Gold Membership...
That's the main reason why I say this:
360 sux, PS3 pwns!

Seriously, PS3 has been out for 4 years and there hasn't been a single ATTEMPT to put anything on it.
At least hand the game over to EA and tell them to port it like you did with The Orange Box.
But really, valve isn't even TRYING. They're basically a bunch of fanboys who probably get paid to talk shit about PS3 and release games for Microsoft platforms.
Fuck you Doug.
Fuck you Gabe.
And fuck you devs.

At this point in the console wars, however, exclusivity is, in my humble opinion, useless. At first it served to be a deciding factor between systems. But now most everybody has already chosen their camp. PS3 and 360 are both systems with good features and bad flaws, neither superior completely to the other. At this point there is no need for exclusivity. Releasing for one system (or, in this case, all but one system) only means that a certain demographic won't be paying a developer.
I am no fanboy of any system. Objectively, they all rock and suck more than the other in certain areas. At this point it's all about the games, not the system. Gamers seem to forget this basic principle: the games themselves are more important than the system. Who among us grew up with the old Final Fantasy games? What about the first Legend of Zelda? These games had piss poor graphics, especially by today's standards, and yet they are still beloved by gamers everywhere. Even now, if you walk into a crowd of gamers and start singing 'Still Alive' you can guarantee you'll have a backup chorus. In moments like those nobody cares who played it on what system; all that matters is that they played it. These days, the system is more important than the games in the minds of most gamers. The system is a means to an end, nothing more. That end is and ever should be the games and the enjoyment thereof.
I have a PS3. I've had a lot of good times with it. I was happy when FFXIII was released for the 360. I'm excited that the next MGS game will also be for 360 as well as PS3. All that means to me is that more people will be able to share in the games I love. More people will be enjoying the same things I can. A lot of these games have become an important part of my life, and were an important part of my growing up. Who am I to wish the denial of this very thing which has touched my life to others? Who am I to deny this joy to others for no good reason?
360 dudes, enjoy Portal 2. I hope it comes to PS3 eventually. Perhaps then we'll all be able to incessantly quote all of the inside jokes with one another like we did with Portal.
