Valve: Left 4 Dead could have been a fairy game

Now here's some funny (and kinda weird) trivia for all you Left 4 Dead fans out there. Doug Lombardi of Valve has revealed some "few failed starts" building L4D, one of which included a flying fairy game.

Where them be fairy dust, eh?

"It was so bad," Lombardi told PC Gamer, "you wanted to ask yourself: 'How could we make a game that was this bad? And how should we make a game?' And we said we should focus on what we do really well, so why are we doing this game which was kind of a... it wasn't really an RPG... it was this action fantasy sort of role playing game that had no story."

"And then we said 'OK, that's so horribly wrong. What we should focus in on is AI and playing in co-op, and that's the interesting opportunity.' That was where Left 4 Dead came from."

Well, I didn't actually see the jump from a fairy tale type of game making the leap into a zombie-killing action, but I'll take it anyway. Thank goodness for that epiphany otherwise, we'd have been left fighting off zombies with pixie dust.
