Toriyama: Final Fantasy will continue to change

snowIn a lot of ways, Final Fantasy XIII is quite different from all the other FFs, but whether you like it or not, that's the way Square Enix wants their core franchise to go.

"It [Final Fantasy] will continue to change for each product," said Motomu Toriyama at GDC. "but the ultimate technology will be pursued and it will remain a magnificent global story centered on human drama. That is why it is well received."

"This will be applied to every Final Fantasy story. I promise we will protect this trend," he added.

Gameplay-wise, the game director also expressed wanting to add interactive cutscenes in series, as opposed to simply watching them. He mentioned it'd be fun jumping off the backs of a thousand flying dragons.

Why does an RPG seem to require cutscenes these days. I think I spent 30 minutes just skipping the cutscenes in Xenosaga.

One of my favorite RPGs of all time was an old computer game called "Wizard's Crown". No cutscenes, excellent story, your party was a box, and the encounters could either last an hour or 2-3 seconds based on whether you chose quick or tactical combat.

Oh and VORPAL RABBITS!!

They have cutscenes for the same reason that games exist. People like them. Anyone who skips cutscenes in Final Fantasy XIII I'd question why the hell they are playing the game in the first place. They are not only rewards for playing the game, but they also tell you what the hell is going on. Maybe you'd like to just see "Congratulations " after you complete a game instead of being able to see things happening as a result of your winning. Maybe some people don't care... If you just wanna push buttons, go play Lumines.

I didn't say I skipped cutscenes in FF13.
I don't even own a copy yet. I said Xenosaga. (I actually meant Xenosaga 3)

My point was that with decent story telling within the game, you don't require cutscenes every 20 minutes to keep you in the story.

Anybody remember in FF7 when you played as Cloud in the Nibelheim flashback? YOU made the decisions on where to go, whether to explore every house, play Tifa's piano, or just advance the story.

How about in FF8 when you played as Laguna? I enjoyed playing the "flashbacks".

I thought it added to the story and helped to identify with the characters. Would it have been as interesting for those scenes to have been cutscenes?

I play games to play games, not to watch movies.

I kind of agree.. I guess it's because we're from an older generation of gamers (what?! I'm only 19!) who remembers when plot was told through text, much like Chrono Trigger.. I don't mind cut scenes but sometimes they're a tad long

I've been somewhat enjoying watching one of my favorite game franchises evolve from a player driven interactive game into a... movie? sorry, couldn't say it with a straight face and mean it.

:D Sorry your only 19 I go way back! I started playing role Playing Games back in the early 80's with Dungeon's & Dragon's then came the biggest debut Y's Book 1-2. But the one that got me hooked was Final Fantasy on the Nintendo console 1990!..The rest is history! =) But this new game looks sad. There's more cut scene's then the game should have..

The problem is not there are too many cut scenes, it is that there is not enough game. I wish they would have had the world map with towns, cities, locations to visit instead of repeating the same thing over and over again.

without cutscenes, Final Fantasy would just be another lame western RPG with a horrible story that focuses on quests and item gathering to give people a since of accomplishment.

cutscenes = good... Do not westernize the best franchise in the industry.

You play a game like FF for the story. Do you want them to go back to no video and nothing but text? Cut scenes give us the story, they rock!!!

I'd rather, for one, they weren't pre-rendered. That's the first thing I have against most cutscenes. It's really jolting to me.
Second, they could actually be interactive things you could half control then, so it was a video GAME, not game/movie. Even if they were just simple things like what Assassin's Creed put in.

I agree. But in the opposite way. Today we have cut scenes that are both high quality renders and then realtime models. I hate when they switch back and forth between the pre rendered stuff and the realtime stuff. But only because I like the pre rendered stuff better.

The pre-rendered CG in FFXIII isn't much more detailed than the real time animation. The only thing that held back the game from using nothing but full real time cutscenes was that the hardware is just outside the cusp of handling the poly count, texture detail and AA (edge smoothing). Also, the trade-off for using a pre-rendered video versus using real time animation is always going to consume less space since they usually only use it one time and most live gameplay won't take advantage of high poly count models and high texture resolution. The technique is called Level of Detail (LOD) and they would need to store even more data to only render the highest detail when it's actually close to the rendering camera. Take that and the amount of animation data and probably scene graphics that will only be used for that cutscene, and there is your trade-off. I think they did an outstanding job mixing the two styles together, most times I had difficulty picking out the pre-renders from the real time scenes, and others it was obvious, like how smooth or jagged the polys were in the hair on the character models. I've done a lot of 3DS max work and a hair shader is clearly much more realistic than using a low poly mesh with an alpha texture applied to it (like they did for live gameplay) but it's still doing the job since the power of consoles right now can handle a higher poly count on their own.

If this is the way they choose to take Final Fantasy then I can safely say I'm finished with the series. Which is fine because it gives me more time to play games from the Enix side of the brand (you know the part of the company with all the good RPGs that fly under the radar)

I hope linearity is one of those things that get changed. The time of "train rail" games is long due to be gone.
