The Irish aren't so happy with Irish?

Ó

Word on the street is that Red Dead Redemption is banned in the UAE. Word from another, more specific street has it that the United Arab Emirates is not the only country scorning the game. According to news site Herald, the Irish aren't to happy with the game's town drunk, who also happens to be named Irish.

drunk

The character, Irish, is depicted as your typical town drunk - "Usually found stumbling around and getting into trouble with sober townsfolk while attempting to talk his way out," as quoted by the Herald article out of "a popular gaming forum." Even Rockstar Games, developer of Red Dead Redemption, pegs the drunk as "a teller of tall tales, who'll try to talk his way out of anything."

Though the character refers to an old stereotype about the Irish, the author of the Herald article didn't specify how exactly the Irish have reacted over the supposed controversy. The article, the title of which reads "Irish 'drunk' sours launch of hit game" focused more on the game's background than the drunk part.

As an Irishman, I would just like to say HELL YEAH! A drunken Irish guy in Red Dead!
Do people seriously think we care about the stereotype? Most people I know would probably raise a glass and cheer about it.

aye aye

btw, from what i read

no where in that article does it say, what this article is saying

"RED Dead Redemption is the biggest video game in 10 years but eager Irish gamers may be in for a nasty surprise.

The stereotype of the drunken Paddy will again be taken advantage of, as the game's town drunk is called "Irish"."

thats all i can see about it
and it simply says may be in for a nasty surprise

hes just trying to write an article and is mentioning the fact about the 'irish' character

please ffs remove this article. Thats atleast twice QJ has totally got the wrong end of the stick

I'm from Donegal and the stereotype kinda holds true when ya compare us to some country's but not to the extent painted by the rest of the world.

Can't believe people are getting touchy about this, and with that I'm away for a beer :P

Glad you think you're the spokesman for all Irish. You're probably like 10% irish and live in the states.

The herald is a load a pants, that article starts off with the line: "RED Dead Redemption is the biggest video game in 10 years". I mean, how are you suppose to take anything seriously after reading that?

As for how the Irish have reacted to the stereotype, as far as I've heard we haven't...We're use to being portrayed as drunks and con artists...and most of us(except a very vocal minority) can take a joke.

Agree 100%.
I actually find it hard talking to foreigners because of our culture, because oh how second nature it is to take the p!ss of someone. Irish people couldn't coexist with each other if we can't take a joke :P

Heh true that, im in Meath, we're all used to the stereotype, and depending on the media its on, then we'll most likely laugh about it and be happy.

If it was the english taking the piss of us then there'd be outrage, but otherwise its all good :D

Is America the only country that has any humor or common sense. I laugh at other countries talking crap to America but they cannot even handle little stuff like this.

good one non-Americans.

once again

NO ONE EVER GOT UPSET ABOUT

THE ARTICLE WAS PREDICTING THAT SOME MAY WELL GET UP-SET

BUT IT WAS REALLY JUST TO OPEN UP THE ARTICLE

NOTHING TO BE SERIOUS ABOUT

PLUS I FIND AMERICA WOULD GET UP IN ARMS ABOUT MORE THINGS THAN ANY OTHER WESTERN COUNTRY

Next he'll be telling everybody Americans dont have an accent and the language Americans speak is American. (although I suppose its almost arguable, but the truth is its really just bastardised english)

@video gamer
No it's not. Every country have their own sense of humour some of which requires that you understand their culture. And if America is the only place that has any common sense the world would be very much different.

Sad to say but as an Irishman, working in dublin amidst people from the Philipines, South Africa, India and Pakistan, I get embarrased when Irish colleagues talk of social nights out descending into boasts about mounts of alcohol consummed before throwing up or being chucked out of the pub, so perhaps the real problem of the "Stereotype" is that it is in fact, true.
