The Irish aren't so happy with Irish? |
Listed in: PS3, Xbox 360 Tags: red dead redemption, Rockstar Games
Word on the street is that Red Dead Redemption is banned in the UAE. Word from another, more specific street has it that the United Arab Emirates is not the only country scorning the game. According to news site Herald, the Irish aren't to happy with the game's town drunk, who also happens to be named Irish.

The character, Irish, is depicted as your typical town drunk - "Usually found stumbling around and getting into trouble with sober townsfolk while attempting to talk his way out," as quoted by the Herald article out of "a popular gaming forum." Even Rockstar Games, developer of Red Dead Redemption, pegs the drunk as "a teller of tall tales, who'll try to talk his way out of anything."
Though the character refers to an old stereotype about the Irish, the author of the Herald article didn't specify how exactly the Irish have reacted over the supposed controversy. The article, the title of which reads "Irish 'drunk' sours launch of hit game" focused more on the game's background than the drunk part.

Do people seriously think we care about the stereotype? Most people I know would probably raise a glass and cheer about it.

no where in that article does it say, what this article is saying
"RED Dead Redemption is the biggest video game in 10 years but eager Irish gamers may be in for a nasty surprise.
The stereotype of the drunken Paddy will again be taken advantage of, as the game's town drunk is called "Irish"."
thats all i can see about it
and it simply says may be in for a nasty surprise
hes just trying to write an article and is mentioning the fact about the 'irish' character

As for how the Irish have reacted to the stereotype, as far as I've heard we haven't...We're use to being portrayed as drunks and con artists...and most of us(except a very vocal minority) can take a joke.

I actually find it hard talking to foreigners because of our culture, because oh how second nature it is to take the p!ss of someone. Irish people couldn't coexist with each other if we can't take a joke

If it was the english taking the piss of us then there'd be outrage, but otherwise its all good

NO ONE EVER GOT UPSET ABOUT
THE ARTICLE WAS PREDICTING THAT SOME MAY WELL GET UP-SET

No it's not. Every country have their own sense of humour some of which requires that you understand their culture. And if America is the only place that has any common sense the world would be very much different.
