The Chronicles of Spellborn: The Token System Explained

In anticipation of the upcoming MMORPG Chronicles of Spellborn, the developers have provided some inside info on the games "token" system.

To begin with, players' stats will not be affected by armor and weapons. This allows players greater flexibility in creating their characters' appearance without sacrificing attributes. Players will also be able to integrate tokens into their weapons, as well as select jewelry. Upon reaching higher levels, players will be able to create items to sell to other players.

Generally, a new skill will be earned for every third level the player achieves - and these skills become more powerful, the higher the level. Upon reaching the 10th level, and every three levels above that, players will get slots by which they can embed tokens into their skills. Skill Tokens can be overwritten later with a different one, but the system will make sure the token is compatible with the skill. For example, a player cannot, by his or herself, insert an "increased damage skill token" into the skill slot of a "healing skill." If they wish to do this,  they need to  pay a fee to the local blacksmith to have it done. The reason for this is to prevent one skill from being overwritten by another accidentally.

Specifics: in the case of jewelry,  the tokens are "gems," which are placed into "gem sockets." The gem and the socket must be matched in terms of level; players will not be able to insert a level 5 gem into a level 10 socket, for example. Also, replacing one gem with another requires the services of a forge, so changing them frequently can get quite expensive.

Weapons will be able to carry up to 25 skill tokens, which will require a visit to the local forge. The slots can be arranged to suit the player, and can be upgraded to higher ranks as the player moves through the levels. Once all 25 slots are filled, the player will be able to create a unique "epic" weapon. At the moment, the game developers are still working out the details of this aspect of the game, but should have them available as the release date draws near.
