Swastika multiplayer emblems in Call of Duty: Black Ops can get you banned from Xbox Live |

Ah, swastikas. You'll probably have seen the zombies in Call of Duty: Black Ops wearing these symbols, but don't even think of using them as your multiplayer emblem. That'll just put your GamerTag on the bus to Banville.
Replying to a Twitter query regarding the use of the swastika as an in-game multiplayer emblem, Xbox Live director of policy and enforcement, Stephen Toulouse, replied thusly: "Yes, you will get banned using a swastika as your Black Ops emblem. I don’t care if you “just like the design”."
Twitter doesn't really allow for more in-depth explanations, so he also posted a longer missive on his blog, part of which reads:
The Xbox LIVE profile and in game content you create is accessible by everyone. You do not have the context inside of it to explain your long winded contrarian view that your pithy text that violates the Terms of Use or Code of Conduct is actually intended to change people’s minds about a commonly held understanding.
It’s not political correctness, it’s fundamental respect. If you think the swastika symbol should be re-evaluated by societies all over the Earth, I think that’s great. Your Xbox LIVE profile or in game logo, which doesn’t have the context to explain your goal, is not the right place to do that.
So yeah. Swastika multiplayer emblem = ban. That's a good equation to remember if you want to keep enjoying Black Ops on Live.

middle of Times Square and start yelling completely untrue things about famous people and use all the profanity you can possibly come up with. When the police come and escort you away be sure to use your freedom of speech right...let me know how that works out for you.

The reasoning behind banning the swastika is completely valid. It's allowed in the games, because of the historical context; you fight Nazis, nobody's going to misunderstand anything, because there's nothing to understand. Nazis existed in WW2, the game is set in WW2, ergo, Nazis are there for you to fight.
When some kid sticks a swastika into his emblem, or decides to stick WPWW or some other stupid Nazi-inspired gimmick into his handle, the immediete assumption is that they believe in that shit, hence the offense. I'd certainly feel offended if some wanker had a swastika engraved onto his gun!

The only thing is though, MS is the only one doing anything about anything like that. you can't police everything, swastikas in anything else that allows you to alter your name most likely exist too. is MS gonna go after them too or are they gonna force the hand on PC and ps3 as well to ban people from using it? just because one view doesn't like it, doesn't mean that everyone else has to agree to it, which is why i think it is quite funny that the blog writer doesn't allow comments on there. Simply for the fact that he's being flammed to death and most likely getting tons of hate mail.
