rbMedia consulting firm, Frank N. Magid Associates, has released the results of their survey, and they found that only 15% of gamers buy DLC for their games. Heck, 43% of them aren't even aware of what DLC is.

The firm conducted the survey with 800 gamers, nearly half of which, do not know about DLC. The survey aimed to see if gamers are aware of their option to download additional content for their games. 41% know about downloadable content, but they don't purchase any.

The president of Magid Advisers, Mike Vorhaud, told IGN that "those who aren't aware of DLC are typically playing consoles that don't actively promote DLC, such as the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii."

given the purpose of their survey, they could've just limited their respondents to gamers who play on platforms with DLC.. can't quite blame PS2 players for not knowing (or caring) about DLC..

How does WiiWare and Virtual Console material not count as DLC? DLC is not strictly limited to add-on's for games, it's simple Downloadable Content.

VC and WiiWare are exactly that; content that you download via the internet onto your console.

So it's not like it's not actively promoted. It's right there on the channels section when you turn on the system.

i know right? like on the psp the comic book reader is a dlc right? and as u said wiiware is a dlc and if they mean game addons then they should refer to it as gdlc or game addons no? anything that u add to a console virtually/onto the hardware is considered a download content note> content.... it can be almost anything that you download for games and on the console itself right?

I don't even know how anyone can come to the conclusion that 15% of gamers buy content based on asking a miniscule 800 people. That number doesn't even make up 0.01% of all the gamers.

This is why surveys are stupid. How can you just ask 800 ppl, then expect that its the same across the board?

You can make surveys say whatever you want really.

Developers are desperately trying to kill off physical media but know we won't accept it so i give it 10 years before disks have litte more than the title screen and have to download everything else, maybe a slight exaggeration but developers are having wet dreams about this kind of future.

In order to make an assessment on a population (gamers) a sample size of 800 is suficient. It has a statistical power over 80% which is usually used for population case studies. The real trick here is how they sampled those 800. It needs to be totally random. And by random I mean that every social class is represented, every age group, every sex, every console and every region. I seriously doubt this is an unbiased statistical analysis. More of like "ask around and see whats up" thing...

Lower the prices of DLC and the percentage would raise, its that simple developers, if you want better sales, lower the bloody prices.

Who doesn't want to download a new costume or slightly new mode a day after the game is released for an extra 6 dollars? I mean, it's not like games are 60 dollars to begin with. I think we can afford a little extra money for some exciting new content. I mean, 15 dollars for a couple more levels makes total sense. Especially when the DLC prices never change as the games' prices decline with age.

Therefore you are not a gamer. So the survey is garbage period. Sony knows EXACTLY how many gamers are getting DLC's period. Someone was paid for a useless survery ... How to get your hoe paid? Get them to do a survey.

I'd bet 400-500 of those folks are still PS2 gamers, so of course they don't buy DLC...

i like to pay for my games once.

dlc is just another poor excuse to milk more money out of the customer. i'm not falling for that.

when i'm getting a pretty recent psp/ps3 game, i feel it's incomplete because of all the dlcs that appear later on. that sucks.

Most of the time the thing is that Dev release a "incomplete" game so that they can get some profit outta the game and keep working on the game. once there are done the release it and get MORE profit out of it. so to them its like a Win-Win but to us it really depends it might be a Lose-Lose or a Win-Lose...
BTW nice comment system QJ! Could it be possible...?! *crosses fingers for edit button*

I download less than i wanted to. First because i got a 1MB internet and ALL things in PSN always come with 3 or 4 digits (xxxMB or xxxxMB/X GB) and this takes a LOT to download and kills my connection while downloading so, i avoid downloading at all.

For example: Marvel VS Capcom 2 DEMO. 300mb+. Ok, sounds fair. Now, it had a 350mb UPDATE?!!? That added NOTHING to the already crappy demo (that can play solo, just VS P2). Man, that was the epic waste of my time and bandwidth! And now i'm pissedwith the game itself and will not buy.

In other hand, i wasted some days to download MAG beta, that in the end might be around 2.5GB for a Demo. Was worthy ? Yes, i'll buy the BD now when it get's released. Another game: Dragon Age. I'm eager to get the new DLC and the expansion. And all DLC related.

But i think dlc must start to be a little smaller and cheaper.

this dlc stuff needs to go!
i absolutely refuse to pay for dlc.

disgaea 3: a game costing 68euros, then you pay 50 euros total for some extra characters (which are just some sprites) and a few game modes.

totalling over 120 euros

well NO SHIT, i'm not buying dlc.

same goes for that other stuff.

dlc is just a way for people to get used to non-physical media.

I know of low income single parent families near me whose kids play on PS2 and PS3 who rely on buying pre-owned titles cheap off ebay or in the game shops...and who also buy the odd full priced game on a special occasion. Now I wouldn't expect a big corporation to care for them as they're not making much money off them, but as a fellow gamer, I care....and so should you lot! Same as I care for gamers in remote places in a similar situation. Broadband only delivery would put an end to their gaming fun in one, fell swoop. Why are so many of you trying to fight for one or the other being the total victor in this "war"? Why can't DLC and physical media exist side by side? And as I reach to my shelf and take hold of one of my rare titles like my mint copy of Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence...with it's wonderful artwork and the like, I realise nothing could EVER replace the sensation of holding it in my hand (Oooer, you know when something sounds right in your head....and then you say it)
