Street Fighter or Tekken? Which side are you on?

Street Fighter and Tekken are two very different fighting game series, and for the longest time, they've remained disjoint and had their own fanbases. With the announcement from both camps, two of the biggest names in the genre are going to clash. There's Street Fighter X Tekken, and Tekken X Street Fighter. I know there are a lot of fighting game fans here on QJ, now let's hear your take - are you a street fighter? Or are you a king of the iron fist?

rvk

It's no secret that both games are completely different gameplay-wise, hence the need for two separate games. Street Fighter fans are likely to go for Street Fighter X Tekken, while Tekken players would probably go for the other way around. But even then, it's a little hard to imagine actual gameplay for either game.

Physics, controls, and balancing will obviously play a huge part in bringing these two games together. Street Fighter's moves are more challenging to execute and perfect, while Tekken's is more intuitive.

Take SF X Tekken - Will Kazuya's wave dash be as effective? Will his attacks be input the same way? Will Nina and the others be able to compete without hadoukens and single-command hurricane kicks?

Same goes for Tekken X SF - Will Ryu's hadouken be unblockable like every fireball in Tekken? Will he be able to juggle? Will shoryuken and all the other characters' special moves still be executed the same way?

The thing is, we're not going to see either game for a very long time, and it's an issue that developers from both camps thought about before agreeing to clash. With Yoshinori Ono and Katsuhiro Harada on the job, I'm sure they'll find solutions.

Now then, enough blab. Let's see the fighting game fans out there and tell us your story.

I am not too sure how the mechanics will pan out but lets look at some obvious points. In sfxtk certain tekken chars if the make the roster will have to be powered down. Like king for instance his rolling cradle will most likely be executed only by ultra combo whilegaint swing possibly be a super combo. Devil jin/kazuya would have to be weakened as well. To totally create balance the teeken roster has to be given something to render projectile attacks mediocre or average at best since only a few staple charactsers have projectiles in the first place, I'm guessing dodge that was previously used in cvs2 (my fav) cause giving all chars dash would alter the tekken chars too much from there actual feel to the sense that they feel like skins of tekken than actual tekken chars. Tkxsf seeing as how super bars are nonexistant in tekken the chars would feel more like street fighter 2 but with a updated move and combo set remember sf did 3d before with the ex series but didn't fully use the 3d to their advantage. the execution of projectiles and most moves may see little change as input but moreso timing cause remember sf is a six button game going on a four button format just like cvs1 and svcc. Albeit instead of low, high like in those games tekken is left, right which adds a new lv off difficulty. Some chars like Zangief (vs King) his Super and or Hyper atomic buster would be button command as i expect several o fthe sf chars supers tol be. Chun-li's hyarestu-kyaku would be a 10 combination. Hadou chars shoryukens/uppercuts would be similar to kazuya/jin's uppercuts in execution, but the frame after the attack where most sf chars jump after their uppercuts they are open for pain, if lets say ak was the oppent (my fav char tk6 moveset) that's a free chain grab if you were to side-step properly. A fear i have is that in their respective games the characters may be slowed down to give the newcomer an advantage which in either game isn't good. Alas I am an avid fighter i will aquire both versions. Hopefully we'll see classic stages from both games redone in both games.

Definitely goin for SFxT, but it should be interesting to see the customizations for characters for TxSF.

I haven't enjoyed a good Tekken game since T3 and TT.

Even with some of the more absurd characters/storylines, Tekken has managed to hold it down.
Tekken x Street Fighter it is...

tekken hold what down? its been exactly the same game since the mediocre (but still better than most fighting games) Tekken 2 just with a few new characters and graphics.

while the same can be said about some of the street fighter games because of the super, turbo/hyper fighting editions, street fighter has been in a league of its own since about 1991 nothing has touched it, not even close.

Street fighter (since world warriors) are the best fighting games, its not even arguable.

come on with the addition of juggling ( actual juggling ) and then later on bounding, custom projectiles and rage tekken has changed a bit while, street fighter has had super's ( nothing more than a glorified grab )& parrying and countering ( which tekken has and does more technical things with ). Im just curious to see how namco is going to deal with the fact street fighter characters have half the move list of tekken characters.

Of course hadoukens are gonna be unblockable the fact that you can block them in street fighter is crazy ( its a fire ball its still gonna burn ya ) but thats why Tekkens got a thing called the 3rd dimension ( you can side step out of the way ;-) ). "Street Fighter's moves are more challenging to execute and perfect, while Tekken's is more intuitive." :-| Glenn your crazy!

You're crazy. "Not even argueable?" Try again. Street Fighter is different from Tekken, yes. They are both unique games that've come a long way. But to say that Tekken is the "same mediocre game since Tekken 2" is most definitely a stretch, almost a lie... I'll give Street Fighter it's due: It may have single-handedly increased interest in the genre, but it does have its competition in Tekken.

Not sure what they are thinking. Why would you have a "vs" game with two different versions and control schemes ?

Make it a real VS game where controls schemes are SF or Tekken based on what character you play.

So if SF/Tekken fanboys think their game is best you can test it out and if you are the losing side (ie. tekken) then you just gotta step your game up and adapt somehow.

If you don't want to get raped by Ryu or Zangief, then you can just play SF vs SF or Tekken vs Tekken....and use Tekken characters when you play your buddies that know SF but still suck and you want to give them a chance....

Hmm...you bring an interesting point to the table, but I have to disagree with you.

As we all know SF games are mostly fast button mashers so at close-range combat Tekken characters would be useless. Another thing is that SF have to cope with Tekken's environment mechanics which means a full 3D environment has to be placed so the characters move side-ways which SF characters are terrible at from games such as EX.

Also making SF characters fight only SF ones and Tekken characters fight only Tekken ones to circumvent this problem is completely dumb and misses the point of making a vs. series of both franchises in the first place. Either they make only one version where the characters cope to one single fighting mechanic or like they are doing now with two different versions which I'll gladly buy.

Lmao, you fail at life. These games will be top tier fighting games on their respective 2D and 3D realms. Not only will they be played extensively by fighting gamers around the world, you can bet your bottom dollar that they'll be played at Evo or other video games tournaments.

Sorry 'bout the wall eariler... but Tekken is a power type game where timing is everything. While SF is more about combos and priority. Yet there is one thing we can count on; No infinites! Capcom is on a binge to eliminate this from their games for some reason.

However it would be interesting to see just how each company protrays their counterparts in the respected versions. I agree these games will be whored @ Evo till we're sick of them. But how many can say that they'll get only one version, and not be tempted to get the other (or at least try it, for all we know cross-over achievements/trophies).

Both series has had they strands of repetition, but they both try to bring something new and the two versions is proof of that. So while most of us here say they'll only get 1 version I guarantee we'll somehow have both.

Im siding with Tekken, and you guys better watch out for my dragons tail.

Actually played street fighter since late 91, but never really liked the controls, at the time i liked MK alot better, and then my favorite game was KOF (94?) but then i discovered Tekken and its been forever my favorite
fighting game.
Street fighter is nothing in comparison to me.

Well as someone mentioned there are very few moves in SF compared to Tekken.

Also i prefer timing to the finger burning half circle this half circle that.
and then again Street Fighter has a pretty small cast. but im looking forward to kicking some Street Fighting Ass.

What the fuck have you people been smoking? Street Fighter has a small cast? Street Fighter is a fast button-masher so Tekken characters are going to have a hard time in close range? You guys have everything backwards. Most of you haven't ever played a Tekken OR a SF game. If you had, you wouldn't be making a fool of yourselves like you all are.

To really play Tekken as a pro you have to use your brain every second after the game started, in Tekken you have to trap, use side step, or spacing to really damage the opponent; but in Street Fighter its basically just offense and defense there's no meaningful movement in that game..so Tekken.
