Square Enix clarifies FFXIII screenshots controversy

Square Enix is getting some major flak for the recently released screenshots for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Final Fantasy XIII. Apparently, the fans aren't all too happy to find that the screens for both versions were identical. Today, Square Enix is putting a spin on the debacle and attempts to quiet down the disrest over the controversy.

PR Manager of Square Enix NA, Sonia Im, released this statement just a couple of hours ago:

"Need to clarify a few things regarding FFXIII screenshots. These were not meant to be released as a comparison of FFXIII on the two consoles...

The Xbox 360 batch in our press kit was the wrong one. We will have a statement shortly."

Do people really care about this? Do Sony fanboys really care? They're getting an practically unaltered version of FFXIII, and the 360 is getting a port.

We all know ports tend to suffer in the long run, just like I'm sure we all know that the 360 is going to be the (ugh...kill me now) "inferior" version.

From all accounts, previews and the like, the 360 version looks nearly identical to the PS3 version. This should not be a cause to rage, but to celebrate.

Also, regarding the NA gameplay changes.

My PS3 brethren, we are not getting a "dumbed-down" version of XIII because it's also coming to the 360. EVERYBODY in NA is getting a "dumbed-down" version because Square has put so much money into XIII that they need to make sure it's a massive hit, which means selling to the lowest common denominator.

Get over it, for christ sake.

What does it matter if they're identical? The Xbox is capable of producing great graphics; granted, it isn't as powerful as the PS3, but who cares?! You don't need the best graphics in the world to enjoy a game as epic as this. It sounds like fanboys are just picking holes for the sake of picking holes

it's not false advertising since Square has admitted to a mistake. So deal with it.

It would only be false advertising if they said that they were pictures from different builds of the game and never admitted an error on their part.

jjcobra - Go back and read. The question was, "What does it matter if they are identical?" The point was that it "WOULD HAVE" been a big deal if the SS's were in fact identical. THEN it would have been FALSE ADVERTISING.

Obviously, after the fact, if the screen shots are just someones big mistake from taking one shot and altering it then the issue will get cleared up. However, they have not YET cleared it up.

sounds more like the 360 fanboys are getting aggitated over the comparison, obviously the ps3 ff13 version has better graphics..
like square enix said before - they had to downsample some of the sound and music for xbox version of the game since it wont or cant fit on one disc lol..

There's no towns in this game, multi platform did indeed make tha final product suffer regardless of wut u say. FFXIII versus won't be compremised due 2 ps3 exclusivity but then again it never will be FFVII. Square Enix lost the FF juice after 10 ne ways. Tha main chicks just a female version of cloud, so unoriginal look it up that's a true developmental fact.

I dont get the big deal, infact I would expect them to be the same.

The game came out first in japan and was ps3 only, which mean they prolly took the japanese press kit and photoshoped it for NA, which would mean the photos should be identical.

Now if the xbox version showed the ps3 controls i might understand, but honestly, its a press kit ment for advertising, not for making a tech spec comparison

That WAS the point of the comparison photos, right? Showing the fact that the two consoles were supposedly "exactly the same" (except for prerendered cutscenes). And they faked it. Therefore, people got mad.

They're not identical. They're the exact same picture with a 360 button photo shopped in one of them. Take a look at them side by side, the whole contreversy is that they want to make both versions of the game look exactly the same even if it's not true. What other reason would they have to make fake pictures? The whole point of comparison shots is to compare two different versions. I don't buy the whole it was a mistake thing because photoshops don't just make themselves Squenix got caught with their pants down and now they're back tracking.

Do any of you read? The 360 version has its own graphics engine for this game. The video is all compressed as well. The PS3 version looks far superior than the 360 version. If they did not do all of this on the 360 version then the game would be like 5 discs.

Look, I'm both a 360 and PS3 gamer, and tbh it is ridiculous that SqE even tried to pass off the images as different. Wouldn't it be easier to take a new screenshot rather than edit one image?

And to everyone saying 'PS3 fanboy', why? wouldn't you be pissed if SqE tried saying a Wii picture was the same as a 360 one? The extra quality in the PS3 release is the only extra thing that the PS3 hasn't had taken from it since Microsoft wanted a piece of the FF pie.

oh, and I'm getting BOTH versions come 09.03.10, just to prove the difference to myself.

It's basically a big deal because everyone is now saying that Square doesn't want to release the actual 360 pics. Probably because they are crappy. Or maybe because they look better than the PS3 version. Who knows? All of this controversy because of Bayonetta.
