There has been an on-going competition in the commercial space flight business and it almost came to an end for the Mojave Airport in New Mexico. The Mojave Airport is the first to provide private space flights for tourists.
They have been trying to get substantial loan from California running at about $11 million over 30 years. This money is to fund a research facility and passenger spaceflight terminal. In order to receive this funding they needed to receive 7 votes from committee members, but they only got 4 votes and the expansion for the terminal was not looking good. With a stroke of luck, Republican state Sen. Roy Ashburn was able to get 4 more votes for the go-ahead for the funding of the new facility.
There was controversy regarding the decision, which just so happens to be backed by a British billionaire Richard Branson. Questions were asked why the state was funding giving a billionaire millions of dollars to fund this private venture. But, plans are going ahead and there is hope that the commercial space race will continue.
