South Korea Plans All-Out (Gaming) Assault On Japan, North America and Europe

koreaNow that a number of gaming consoles, long popular in Japan and the West, have finally been allowed to be sold in korea/1573" id="tag" title="">South Korea, the gaming industry in that country is gearing up for a major assault on a market whose value is expected to triple in the next three years.

Before now, all gaming efforts by Korean developers have been in the MMORPG field. The potential for growth in that country is being stifled because the market there is relatively small and saturated. For this reason, Korea's gaming leaders - NCSoft and Webzen - are looking at foreign markets. Cindy Armstrong, CEO of Webzen America says, "MMOGs are still a relatively niche segment of the North American video games market, but I believe they have the potential to be as big here as in Asia."

At the moment, the only Korean title that has proven competitive in the world gaming industry is the immensely popular World of Warcraft by Blizzard Entertainment.

Experts predict the MMO gaming market  will expand from its present  $3.4 billion to $13 billion by 2011.
